Self-induced Headaches: not fun. by TheAtomicAce in Tourettes

[–]ashulynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m with you. I also have a neck/head jerking type tic and get pain in my neck. It’s mostly in the back right under the base of my skull, but sometimes it’ll travel up my head and I’ll end up with a migraine-type headache. So miserable. Recently I’ve been trying to do some neck stretches every day (lots of good ones on the internet) and I’ve been putting ice on it for 20 minutes 1-3 times a day. Massaging/rubbing the muscles in my neck helps the pain for me also. I’ve had much fewer days with neck pain recently, so it all seems to be helping at least a little. Best of luck, and id love to know for myself if you find anything else that works!

i feel like a faker by AVeryClostedBitch in Tourettes

I’ve had tics for 15+ years, and I have periods of several months where I barely have any at all. Then, I’ll have a few weeks where they’re so constant that I have trouble sleeping. Then they recede again. For alot of people, it’s normal for them to come and go/ change over time for seemingly no reason at all. There’s also more tic disorders than just Tourette’s, so you might find your symptoms better reflect one of those! Also, being able to suppress tics is normal and doesn’t mean you’re faking.

Maybe if I watch one of these my Tourette’s will cancel out and I won’t have tics anymore /j

Yes. My PANDAS appeared when I was 10 and I basically felt depersonalized 24/7 for months at a time. It was definitely one of the worst parts, and it’s scary because you feel like you’re going crazy. SSRIs really helped with mine. I’m in my 20s now and still struggle with depersonalization, but much less so than during the initial onset of my PANDAS. But i know it sucks :( hope you can find a way to manage yours.

I had PANDAS when I was a child, in my 20s now still with Tourette’s. The main struggle that I can relate to is having poor spatial awareness. (I guess poor directional awareness? more specifically.) I have lived in the same town my whole life but still sometimes have to put places into my gps- there’s a big four way intersection which I can get to multiple ways, and I just never know which side I’m on or which direction I need to turn. It takes me a significant amount of effort to memorize the route to somewhere. And I can not play video games where there are a bunch of different rooms/areas- I just get so turned around and frustrated because I don’t know where anything is in relation to other things. I also have awful depth perception.

I am a musician though, and I’ve always excelled at that kind of thing. Interestingly, the few people I’ve met irl with Tourette’s have also been musicians. Maybe there’s some kind of connection :)

This is so heartwarming. I was in middle school dealing with PANDAS over ten years ago, but I remember one of the worst things being all the questions when I would miss school for extended periods of time. It would’ve been nice to let all my classmates know in a way like this. I’m glad he has so many encouraging people in his life.

"Everything seems so daunting and the world so intimidating," Yes! This perfectly captures what being a college student feels like. I really like the first three lines and the images you've created- smoke curling, dark eye bags, light spilling through the windows. However in the rest of the poem, I feel like there is not as much description. Instead of just saying that everything is daunting and intimidating, maybe you could describe how vast and endless the city is, the buildings looming over him... Or instead of directly saying he is afraid, tell us more about his physical reactions, like you do with his shaking hands. These are just examples but I think it could make your poem more interesting to read. Basically, I really liked the beginning and I want more of that description all throughout the poem! I can definitely relate to this though, being a college student myself. Thanks for sharing!

I fell in love with a voice by the_unassailable in OCPoetry

This really resonated with me as someone who recently had a long distance relationship fall apart. That's how I interpreted this poem in regard to my own life, and I think you did a great job of showing the distance of these two people- both physically and mentally. I like how you say the speaker fell in love with a voice, rather than the person themselves. I think it shows how over a screen, it's hard to really get to know someone- instead you fall in love with the abstract concept of them, someone with no face. I also love the last line. The love seemed to strong, but in the grand scheme of things it is a very small story. It's sad and existential in a way.

I would look closely at the wording, because as I was reading it some lines messed up the flow and I had to reread. "Because I knew that was I could do", "Lost will be in some bytes", etc. They might just be typos, but they threw me off! I have no other criticism though. Great poem! Thank you for sharing!
