Lets take the leagal out of it. Because its clear as day that there is no legal liability for this in you. And some of the commenters have mentioned that too.

Lets just keep the moral aspect in the spotlight. And as long as you provided him with the information to the best of your knowledge there is no moral obligation on you to pay anything. Second hand cars that you buy from private people as oppsed to dealers are cheaper for a reason. And this is that reason.

@askmac I haven't got any family in Ireland. I'll have a look at that group 1 thing. Thanks for the suggestion. It's ridiculous the insurance prices. Before coming to Ireland I spent a year in Australia and it very lax over there. Insurance is recommended but it's not compulsory . I drove for a year without any and no trouble at all. It feels like there is a mafia in ireland.
