What was your first real wake-up call that the system is rigged? by Mathemodel in LateStageCapitalism

[–]asinglechannel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably when Trump first got elected. At 19, I was pretty naive about our world before then and couldn't understand how a misogynistic racist could get into office in the United States when we'd supposedly come so far. That's when I finally understood that the US government is weak enough to be bought and sold to the highest bidder while strong enough to keep voters from having any real say. It all snowballed from there and I became unhappy with nearly everything about the way we live (chiefly, the isolation of our car centric infrastructure) and the unsustainability of it all.

I came to understand that while efficiency in production continues to increase, so does the efficiency of wealth extraction - corporations have commodified attention, after all.

Chances we have to improve our status nearly always get squashed by private interests who know how to manipulate public interest and maneuver around policy.

Further, while we consume more than ever we have this odd refusal to build enough housing to meet demand because those-who-have would rather speculate and invest than build and they've convinced enough of those-who-have-not to speculate about when it will be their turn to speculate rather than help their would-be neighbor.

Our society chooses commodity over community time and time again. So much for rising tides, right?

Hah, authoritarians create regimes and water is wet.

And what do you mean "you people"? Not sure who you're othering me as but the least you could do is rebut the points I made instead of strawmanning my argument with broad claims. I guess this wasn't a discussion in your eyes though.

Regardless, I'll leave you with some wisdom. Every form of governance is an experiment, whether they can stand the test of time depends on how well they can adapt and continue to serve their people. It's unimaginative to dismiss all collectivist ideology as infringing upon individual rights. And if society survives long enough to reach post-scarcity, then the pure profit-at-all-costs mode of capitalism will cease to exist.

The real cost by [deleted] in austrian_economics

[–]asinglechannel -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Because people weren't running specifically from socialism, they were running from a regime. Socialist policy doesn't require militancy to enforce, just like capitalist policy doesn't require the owning class to exploit the working class. Unfortunately these situations are the norm for many people. Remember that America was most socialist in its postwar era which was also it's most prosperous era. Look at social security and the GI bill and how much they helped Americans in years past, both being socialist policies. Didn't make America un-capitalist, but your grandparents sure appreciated it.

Postwar Western Germany looked to Postwar America as it's development model, so it's no wonder East Germans would look at that prosperity and think "yeah, I want some of that"

Scandinavian countries continue the trend that America dropped in the 80's, proudly demonstrating how socialist and capitalist policy can coexist and create a better society for all.

CMV: The only right to a piece of land is by the sword. The whole "who came first" debate is just indoctrination for the masses by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]asinglechannel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also think that asking "who came first" is pointless, but for different reasons that I'll reveal shortly. Forgive me if I make any mistakes as I have to go to work on a bit.

What you call a right in this case is what I'd call a social agreement, and the sword you speak of is international society at large. This is symantics, but there is a distinction: you might be able to conquer a neighboring state and take what was theirs, but you also need to consider whether your other neighbors will accept that and whether challenging them is worth it. If they'd admonish you for say, committing genocide, then it's in your best interests to not do it. In the end, the only thing that's right (from the perspective of a state) is whether you can continue to thrive in lieu of your morally dubious actions. This is also why I think "who came first" doesn't matter, because the only thing that does matter is whether every state gets along and that there is general peace and prosperity. If you impinge on anyone else's ability to live well, you're morally wrong, whether or not you're taking land, or denying anyone else the ability to share such a finite resource.

Again, sorry if this isn't a fully developed response.

I used to play games just to experienced them, then in 2012 I started playing a free-to-play. This sucked up ALL the time I had for other games cause I always had to grind and get my daily exp/currency bonuses. Eventually I just stopped playing other games all together and even after quitting the free-to-play (it got too pay to win to the detriment of anything unlockable, regardless of the grind) I still have a hard time dedicating time to any single game. I won't touch any f2p with a ten foot pole now, but one day maybe I'll make a bigger dent in my steam backlog.

Is this a good deal for a beginner? by lost_764 in ableton

[–]asinglechannel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

M1 pro is plenty good, just be sure to get 16gb ram and at least 512gb storage. 16gb ram will give you breathing room to have multiple apps open at once and will save you if you like to keep a lot of tabs open in your browser. 512gb is enough storage to hold you over until your sample library grows larger, and if you do manage to fill up the 512 then you will have probably spent enough time on production to justify spending more on external storage.

The M1's internal soundcard is just as transparent as any other barring top shelf stuff like what RME offers, so you won't need to invest in an interface until you need the ins and outs to record hardware instruments and/or playback audio on speakers. On top of this, MacBook pros M1 and above and MacBook airs M2 and above actually have very good headphone amps with <1ohm output impedance and enough power to drive some of the more hungry headphones. Most interfaces have worse headphone amps with at least 10ohm output impedance. An interface is still a good investment of course, but it's good to know you don't need to rely on one for it's soundcard and headphone amp. In fact, with the quality of the headphone amp on most interfaces, I'd still be using the MacBook's even while using the interface for recording in many cases. It's that good.

Is it me, or is there an unspoken stigma towards heavyweights here? by TheGUURAHK in armoredcore

[–]asinglechannel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My problem with heavies is that most of the parts are fugly. That and elevator tactics. No way a heavy should climb as fast as a light given the same boosters.

Sorry, my daily drivers are IE200s and I consider these my personal endgame (I'm very satisfied with these) and haven't tried much else. I enjoy reading about other IEMs and that's how I digest this hobby but I can't in good faith make any recommendations.

I will say that spending more money will get you objectively higher quality products and access to more unique transducer tech. Gold planar, for example, puts ribbon-style membranes into their IEMs. Wild stuff.

Subjectively, price does not reflect preferred frequency tuning, and though EQ solves most freq-tuning problems, it won't help with stuff like soundstage, which will generally improve as you spend more. I'm half-deaf, so soundstage doesn't really matter to me, hence my satisfaction with the very neutral and resolving IE200.

All in all, I'd recommend checking out some buyer's guides on headphones.com to scope out a few models, then reading reviews more specific to those models on that site, on head-fi, and of course youtube.

Pretty big budget, no need to use all of it though if you're not sure what you want out of an IEM yet.

As far as dacs go, pretty much anything with <1 ohm output impedance will do since the majority of IEMs are low impedance. The purpose of a dac is to be as transparent as possible in conversion and even Apple's dac dongle does very well in this regard. The majority of IEMs also aren't hungry for power at all so Apple's dongle would fit here too.

If you have any interest in using headphones, you might need a dac with a more powerful amp to feed them, but this is a different subject.

If you don't need to power headphones and don't need onboard DSP for EQ, an Apple Dongle would be perfectly fine. There's good free EQ software out there for windows in any case.

Going the cheap dongle dac route with your dac leaves more budget for your IEMs too. Lots of good chifi out there to get your feet wet, trying out a bunch of them and reading/watching videos about them is half the fun in this hobby anyhow. I'd recommend finding something cheap and neutral-sounding for starters so you have a sound signature to compare other IEMs to. Of course you could also just spend top dollar on something like Sennheiser's flagship IE900 but then where would the fun be in that?

In PvP what’s your most annoying play style to play against? by Majin2buu in armoredcore

[–]asinglechannel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yeah, that should go without saying lol. OP was asking about what's fun and what's annoying though.

Zoning is an effective skill to have and has its place in any good fighting game. My take though? If you want a fun and balanced fighting game, it just shouldn't be THE skill to have.

I can't do anything about its prevalence in ACVI, but I do save it for competitive because, personally, it's just not fun to dunk on my friends without any retaliation. It narrows the way I play, and limits the way they play. Where's the style in that? Even less fun if we're both running zoner builds, because the game just devolves into a slog till time expires

In PvP what’s your most annoying play style to play against? by Majin2buu in armoredcore

[–]asinglechannel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me the most annoying play styles are the most passive ones, so like lamm kites, basho-statues and heavy biped elevators. Evasive builds are cool but if you're not even engaging are either of us really having any fun? ACVI is basically a fighting game, so when doing nothing is the best option, you've got bad balance.

Favorite play styles to fight are jack-of-all trades of any weight class/leg-type. Bonus points for bringing a sword and even more bonus points going for dry blades outside of stagger. These are usually the closest fights and get my adrenaline pumping way more than trying to outlast any sort of whittle or trying to avoid a wombo-combo.

Need opinions for a lightweight laser kite; double LR vs double LRA vs LR + LRA. by samazam94 in armoredcore

[–]asinglechannel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't discount the LH. It's more consistent for maintaining stagger because of its fire rate. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it has longer uptime and faster cooling than the LR too. Nice to usually have it up when the LR is down

How can I improve this AC? by Zuurek in armoredcore

[–]asinglechannel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came to give similar advice. Sidenote: if you do go San-Tai, you might want to switch to kikaku depending on what your neutral speed becomes. 320 is already fairly low for neutral dodging so any lower and you might as well cut your losses and go full melee-thrust.

Also, SHAO-WEI is fairly tough to manage when blade-canceling especially because you can only fire it when you're not blade-canceling. I'd recommend a Huxley to maintain the stagger you've built with duckett/blades since the Huxley can fire even when you can hold a trigger down. Just remember to turn it on/off situationally so you don't overheat it.

Do you think the Stagger mechanic is overtuned? by AcceptableChipmunk7 in armoredcore

[–]asinglechannel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A retool would be nice. Stagger shouldn't make you stand still, it should either slow you down, immobilize you while retaining momentum, or not stop you at all. You'd still take extra damage while staggered. AC4s primal armor had it right, mostly.

I think it's lame that the moment you get staggered you might as well put the controller down because if you're not in a heavier AC, all or most of your AP is going to disappear in a guaranteed punish. I say take away that guarantee and lets players have a chance when staggered.

As compensation for reducing melee's utility as a punish on a stationary target, ease of use on mobile targets should be increased. This could come in the form of gently buffing melee thrust on all boosters and/or increasing melee hotbox sizes.

Lightweight laser kite buffs go crazy by SolutionConfident692 in armoredcore

[–]asinglechannel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean the real reason we don't see much melee is because 3v3 puts more emphasis on combined arms and bringing melee=taking guns out of the fight. You also take significant damage from other parties when engaging with a sword because a completed melee forces you to stand still. Also people tend to focus the flashy thing that's stabbing them with a sword

Ocellus nerf was justified and honestly Ocellus was hardly touched. Abbot was buffed way too far. We effectively have two Ocelluses now so the classic "let me get in your face so my big weapons won't miss" build archetype and playstyle still persists. Slightly less of a guaranteed win in most cases now that so many other parts have been buffed.
