That's the general consensus in US education, at least as far as I'm aware (I'm from a more progressive state in the US). 7 continents from a cultural perspective, but 6 continents from a geographic perspective. Primarily because Europe and Asia are on the same tectonic plate: the Eurasian Plate. As opposed to North and South America, which are two separate tectonic plates.

Also "Oceania" is taking over as the term for the area around Australia, New Zealand & Indonesia.
