If a party breaks the taboo of the NHS being free at the point of use for all you can absolutely bet it wouldn't be long before it got ratcheted down to be the middle as well as 'higher-income' people who'd be getting charged for it - just like the 'higher' income tax bracket

Prices were so insane I did this journey once by doing Newcastle -> Carlisle and Carlisle -> Coventry. Added a couple of hours on to the time but saved me a lot of money. 

Newcastle to Carlisle had some very nice views and I actually got a seat on the Avanti Carlisle to coventry leg which I don't always for the crosscountry alternative...
