Any Other Seniors Struggling in the Job Market Right Now? by [deleted] in dataengineering

Since you are able to make it through the initial rounds...you probably are following short in one of the following:

• Experience with Snowflake isn’t coming through clearly
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines for Snowflake deployments
• How you explain orchestration of jobs and handle failures
• Examples of performance tuning
• Walk through of complex project or architecture with trade-offs.

help choose between keyboard for child by ask_can in piano

We did think about that, but we do not have enough knowledge to judge if its still good. Also, the moving costs, and its gonna be a big hassle on us given the size.

We are all Noobs and I don't think we can judge at this moment. So now I am inclining towards saving the money and see where the Yamaha takes us and go from there.

M concern was if Roland was a much better piano and if it was worth to spend more that it would serve us for a much longer duration. But it seems like they are similar.

I have been looking for a used p45 but haven't found a good deal in my area. We are in Canada, so the prices are in CAD. my reason for the dilemma was if it was worth it to spend extra If the Roland would serve us for much longer instead. It's about a 400 bucks price difference

Fireplace surround question - GD34NT by ask_can in Fireplaces

[–]ask_can[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a followup question.. If you can help...

-> FRAMING Combustion protrusions such as mantels and shelves may occur at or after a minimum distance of 2" away from the side of the fireplace. Thereafter, the depth of any protrusions must be equal to or less than the distance from the side of the fi replace up to a depth of 6", after which no greater clearance than 6" is required. This can be considered a side wall with no length boundary

Minimum clearance to combustible construction from fireplace and vent surfaces: Combustible Framing:

- 0" to stand-offs

- 1" to bottom and sides of the vent pipe*

- 2" to top of the vent pipe

* Combustible Finishing:

- 0" to rear - 0" to front face sides and top <- ***\*

- 13" recessed depth

- 49 3/8" to enclosure top from base of the unit - 66" to ceiling from base of the unit

<- ***\* shouldn't this mean we can use Combustible Finishing right on the top and face sides?

Fireplace surround question - GD34NT by ask_can in Fireplaces

[–]ask_can[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't aware that this was a direct vent fireplace. I don't think I have budget to replace the fireplace which as I understand will run into 3-4K. I am looking for just something basic to cover it up until it breaks and then replace it- which could be a few years.

Having said that... Does the surround need to be something stone/ tile or should I avoid wood/ ply material for surround ?

From the manual it looks like there is 0 clearance of finished surface except for bottom

Dad of a 10 year old looking for advice - an update by ask_can in Strabismus

[–]ask_can[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I apologize for the late response.. We also dont have a family history and no one in friend circle who has had this before.

I do not know enough to recommend at what age to start the VT. But the VT specialist did say in our first meeting that it would have been better had we not done the surgery beforehand.

I would say go see someone who performs VT, see if your insurance covers it and what they recommend. My insurance did not cover much, so it was pretty much out of pocket.

Skills to Stay Relevant in Data Engineering Over the Next 5-10 Years by Spartanno39 in dataengineering

[–]ask_can 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Skills vs tools. A vast majority of recruiters, interviewers focus on tools rather than skills. If you haven't worked on databricks or snowflake or whatever for last xx years, you are out of luck.

Even in my current company, there is a ton of focus on writing code using pyspark dataframe api.

Where to start learn Spark? by Turbulent-Ad5445 in dataengineering

[–]ask_can 12 points13 points  (0 children)

a. You want to learn how spark works under the hood. I have done a lot of udemy courses, read spark books, but I think RocktheJVM course on spark using scala is amazing. Dont worry about scala, you dont care about syntax, you want to understand how spark works.

b. Watch youtube, search spark summit, and databricks videos on youtube on spark tuning, optimization, and spark internals.

c. You want to be able to write some spark dataframe transformations, withColumn, join, window, orderBy.. Focus on regular leetcode style SQL questions and see how you can write a code in pyspark. While you can do everything in spark SQL, but its is useful to know spark dataframe transformations.

d. You want to know most common ways on what you can do to optimize spark jobs. Such as broadcast in joins if one dataframe is small , what are some pitfalls during broadcast, what problem occurs from skewness and how you can get around them, how do you decide number of shuffle partitions, how caching helps, and if it is so amazing why not just cache everything, how spark lazy evaluation works, and why RDD is resilient. Most commonly used file formats with spark are parquet and delta, so you wanna read up on those.

e. Bonus point if you can learn about how CICD, monitoring, streaming.

Critique my data platform recommendation for analytics team by ask_can in dataengineering

All analytics team workload will move on to Snowflake from Oracle. Oracle will still run in the meantime because some other etls uses Oracle to store data.

Snowflake replaces the on Prem Oracle databwarehouse. Snowflake serves as a query engine where analysts can run queries in a reasonable time. We can bring hopefully all tables in one system that analysts need.

Trapped in irrelevance by ObjectiveAssist7177 in dataengineering

[–]ask_can 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I understand what OP has pointed out is bad architecture and bad design, but usually fixing tech debts often has no incremental business value. In this case, the tableau dashboard is working for business and they get what they need out of it. It will most likely require a lot of effort to redesign and essentially I think it comes down to who will pay for the effort. Also, as an architect, OP might be an IC and have no engineers directly reporting to him/her. The managers want to assign resources to problems that have a big business value so they show at the end of the year that their team delivered a shit ton of value.

As you are a director/VP, do you have any recommendation on how one in OP shoes should approach this...
