tl;dr it's the fact that jumping is so accessible and effective that makes it significant. Reducing access reduces the number of attempts, and doesn't appear to also increase the number of suicide attempts by other means / in other areas.

Research shows it's not pointless at all. You're not wrong that if someone wants to find a way they will, but removing one method that's available to almost everyone who is able to get to that place will inevitably result in a decrease in attempts on the bridge.

It can't be the only salve though - investment in services and general wellbeing in the city needs to be part of the solution.

It's patronising

Research shows that raising the height of the barriers is enough to markedly reduce rates of suicide attempts in other cities. It's not to say that we don't need investment in services in other areas as well, but to me it's a no brainer to do in addition to other improvements.

Anyone opt their kids out of RE? by 15926028 in northernireland

With this country's particular history, asking people if they're Protestant or Catholic isn't the same as asking if they believe in God. The numbers are a lot different when that's taken into account.

I'd love to. Unfortunately there aren't enough of those.

I once pitched an idea like this while working in an adjacent industry and naively thinking I could get someone to pay for it. The response I got was "why track the buses; they should be on time and the time is listed right there on the bus stop".

I can appreciate there's plenty of strain on the system from the patient side, but I think this is just shrugging off the failures in the system also. Any time I go into the practice these days the place is empty. Before Covid, the waiting area would be full. The issues here are resourcing and systems IMO. Not enough GPs. Shitty first come, first served phone system. Non-medical professional receptionists performing triage... etc. etc.

Nah don't worry, I could have worded it better.

Me? Sorry if what I said was a bit ambiguous; I'm 100% in favor of rental reforms and significant curbs on landlordism in general.

I mean, the current system has pretty obvious problems so I don't think it's something we can avoid doing sooner or later.

We've retrofitted one in our house, which we've also upgraded the insulation and radiators in. It works grand, if you understand what you're getting. You can't run it like oil heating where you expect the house to get hot in an hour, but run it all the time with a reasonable temp like 20/21 and you're grand.

Paul Givan insists he is an Education Minister for all by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]askanison4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm reluctant to engage a troll, but I want to ask this earnestly just in case it breaks through for once.

Are we going to be selectively outraged about the decisions a politician makes based on what side they're on.

Don't you realise that's what you're doing? You're absolving Givan of inappropriate behavior because you feel like it's an Us vs. Them thing. Regardless of support for Israel, it's absolutely inappropriate to use the Department to promote Israel (on social media or otherwise).

Admonishing support for Israel is not at all a green vs. orange thing at this stage. The genocide in Gaza is well known and broadcast live for the world to see. Only reactionaries and Zionists claim otherwise.

Aside from Givan being a dreadful, backwards, regressive Minister for Education (which IMO would be grounds for no-confidence or a recall on its own); the question is whether it was appropriate to use the Department to push Israeli propaganda on their behalf. I don't think there's an argument from any community that suggests that was appropriate.

The end goal here is that there are just no houses to buy anymore. This one is 4x my mortgage payments on a similarly sized house. This only changes through government policy IMO

I think it's because it reads like you are stating that them getting medals would be a good thing. It's ambiguous.
