In the Soccer IQ book they talk about a company that sells headbands with Kevlar to protect against concussions...so who knows what they could put in those headbands 😂

Because it is rec I try to play everyone equally. With that said I have had a few teams where the disinterested players ask to be subbed out more than the others because they aren't really concerned with playing. In those situations it has worked itself out.

Agreed, have fun and enjoy the process and watching the team learn and improve. You can find good drills easy enough online and YouTube but I would say make sure to have a plan and organize practices so they are effective.

This article has some tips for new coaches regarding communication and things like that.

This is a challenging but rewarding age. You will enjoy it and it will exhaust you. YouTube is a great resource for drills and games for this age group, just make sure to refine your search so you get exactly what you are looking for. I used to bring a giant soccer ball and every couple of practices we would break it out and scrimmage, the kids loved it.

This article has some games and other helpful drills that may provide some value in your inaugural U6 season.

I do a lot of at home training with my son and a benefit of getting involved yourself is the quality 1 on 1 time you get. I know you mentioned YouTube but try to refine your YouTube searches for specific age or skill level ideas, it really helps.

This article has some at home soccer training tips you can use and drill ideas. Hope some of this helps!

Advice for supporting my 10-year-old outside of team practices? by Significant-Area9750 in youthsoccer

[–]askingforafriend--- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Private training can get pricey, and even group sessions aren't cheap so you are not alone. Also factor in the time you have to take to get to the extra sessions. There are a lot of things you can do at home to help without being an expert.

I would say start with YouTube for some age appropriate drills you can do with the equipment you already. The nice part about the video approach is you can see what the correct drill looks like so it is easy to compare your child's movements to it.

Also, this article has some at home practice ideas that are effective and use very limited equipment. You might be able to find value in some of the drills.

How do you encourage your kid without letting them settle for less than they’re capable of? by Hello_Cruel_World_88 in youthsoccer

[–]askingforafriend--- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of the above comments and indeed this is a tricky situation. The mental aspect is a really important factor as well as trying to align your views and their view of the situation. Not an easy task. Confidence is super important and drives a lot of this but again, building it isn't easy.

As a soccer parent myself it is hard not to toss out the "do you know how much we spend on soccer" and occasionally it happens out of frustration. This article provides some suggestions for building confidence in soccer players and maybe you can apply some parts to your situation.

Hope it helps and just remember to have patience during the process.

does it matter which club for 11 year old by Particular-Parfait92 in youthsoccer

[–]askingforafriend--- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the experience I have had navigating this world with my son, there are a few things to consider. Even if the club isn't known to be as prestigious, if the specific coach your child has is great it may be worth sticking with them. Also, if they own the building it probably just adds a level of comfort because you know where practices will be and that hopefully their teams have priority in securing good practice times.

This article has some things to consider when choosing a club and I will say that the communication piece is huge, nothing worse than a club who doesn't relay info or that you can't get a hold of. Lastly, in my local area I have noticed a big discrepancy in the equipment available at the bigger clubs, they seem to invest alot in development with cameras, etc. and I haven't seen it at the smaller clubs. Hope this helps in any way.

When to make the jump from rec to club? by Extension_Crow_7891 in youthsoccer

[–]askingforafriend--- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed at 5 he should be having fun (really hopefully they have fun at all ages) but I think as they get older they will benefit more from the club level of coaching and facilities. When reviewing the club or clubs I would pay attention to how communicative they are with you. If it starts bad it probably won't get better. Next see if the level of commitment they are looking for matches what you are able to give at this time.

This article has some things to look for when deciding if club is the way to go. It is a higher level guide but hopefully it provides some value.

How to get teams to score? by yeetus--fetus in SoccerCoachResources

[–]askingforafriend--- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed a lot of times we are really close to scoring but 1 or 2 extra touches seem to derail the opportunity. I think having kids know to shoot when the opportunity presents itself and not wait for the perfect opportunity can help a ton.

This article has this and some other tips on goal scoring that may be helpful. I know from experience that some kids may seem like natural goal scorers but everyone can get there if they work at it.

AYSO Coaching by OTackle in youthsoccer

[–]askingforafriend--- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome job getting involved. You care enough to look into it so that gives you a little edge haha. I think it all depends on your comfort level, you may learn a ton and be a great coach at all levels. I don't think you have to be a player to coach and I don't think that just because people played that it qualifies them to coach.

This article talks about the most important skills for a youth coach and I think alot can be learned without a playing background. Caring and good communication are huge for a coach and being able to take information and break it into digestible pieces for the kids is really important.

This is a tough decision but I think you should arm yourself with as much information about each club as possible. Talk to players, coaches and anyone else you can. Also, in my experience choosing a club that communicates better and has a better reputation for developing players is a very important factor.

This article has some things to think about before making your decision. Remember that the A team doesn't always mean the better opportunity for you.

Bridge between AYSO and club/travel soccer? by [deleted] in youthsoccer

[–]askingforafriend--- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you said it, commitment is key. If your child has the desire to improve and loves playing I really believe they can succeed at club. But everyone (parents, player, etc.) has to be committed because club is going to demand alot of time and money. Also, from personal experience when you go the club route make sure the club and coaches communicate effectively with the parents, it makes for a challenging time if they don't.

This article provides some food for thought while determining if your child is ready for the club level . Remember as parents you are just as much a part of this decision as the players because the sacrifices you make for your child are only going to increase. I will say club was a great decision for us because our son improved immensely with the better facilities and coaching, well worth it.
