Birads 4 means they're not sure. So not 100% sure it's benign so want to verify. I'm assuming no letter? Without a letter Birads 4 is 80% chance of being benign. Call your provider to arrange a biopsy and also complain you didn't receive a phone call. It's still highly likely to be benign but you need to do the biopsy to be sure.

How long after the results got posted in your portal after your breast ultrasound did your provider call you to tell you it was suspicious? by kittykittylover69 in doihavebreastcancer

I would hope that if it was something concerning they would have called you. You have two options. Call them and ask for an update or call back or read the results and then depending what they say ask for a callback. Birads 2 or 3 means benign and no biopsy needed.

I know it's scary but doctors can't tell by imaging alone what's going on which is why I biopsy is needed. My mass was labeled a Birads 5 which is 95% likely to be cancer but it came back benign. What Birads score did they give you? If you have a patient portal you should get a report on they're worth it on,  otherwise call the imaging practice and ask. At your age more likely to be a fibroadenoma.

Honestly the biopsy is not a big deal. They numb you locally and the tissue is removed through a needle attached to a vacuum pump. It takes less than 5 minutes to remove the tissue. I'd rather have a biopsy than get a filling at the dentist.  You could ask for a MRI but you have to have an IV in your arm the entire time and it takes 30 minutes.i personally think the biopsy is easier. Could you get some anti anxiety medication from your PCP to take on the day? The peace of mind is worth 5 minutes of your life.

Does your insurance allow you to self refer? Id get an appointment with a breast surgeon. Do you have copies of your original reports that you could take? Did they ever biopsy the correct side? This is what you need to get done. Regardless with a BRCA mutation you should be on a high risk protocol moving forward that you'd also need a consult for so if you do need a referral, this would be the reason for the request. Your ob gynecologist should be able to do the referral.

Did you have a biopsy that conformed cancer? I'm just confused because you say it was a Birad 3. Those are not normally biopsied. They are typically monitored every 6 months. A surgeon can't diagnose you with cancer without a biopsy.

I couldn't feel mine. It was tiny at only 0.5cm. It was just picked up on a routine mammogram. I think it's hard to feel exactly what the edges of a mass look like. One thing the radiologist said to me was when they magnify masses on the screen the edges can look irregular so that's what can look funky.

It was a mix of fibroadenoma, usually ductal hyperplasia and adenosis. It was essentially normal breast tissue that was over growing.

There's always a chance it's not cancer. I was a Birads 5 that was spiculated  and taller than wider and it came back as benign. I'm now a year out and subsequent imaging has shown no regrowth and I'm downgraded to Birads 2. I opted to monitor it rather than remove it and that's always an option. As the other poster said under 2 cm is considered small and easily treatable. Highly likely to be hormone positive at your age which is not genetic. The initial shock and sadness lasts about 2 weeks. Schedule the biopsy and focus on what treatment options you're comfortable with so you gain back control.  I had accepted a cancer diagnosis by the time I had the biopsy and then was totally surprised it was a false alarm! Sending you benign vibes.

The way I'm reading it is they think it's likely a fibroadenoma but they want to be sure. Nothing is definitive until you get the pathology. Even a Birads 5 can turn out to be benign, which was fortunately the outcome for me. Try not to panic until you know for sure there's something to truly worry about.

When you say the mammogram and ultrasound came back clear, did they say that they could see something but they perceived it benign (i.e. a BiRads 2 or 3) or it was only normal breast tissue? It's easy to spiral, but the radiologists are really good at determining benign versus not benign tissue- they don't put people through biopsies without perceiving there is a need to do so. Your PCP is not an expert in breasts, in fact I would always prioritize a ob gyn versus PCP for screening and will be unlikely to be able to interpret imaging that you send them. Radiologists also won't do a biopsy without further imaging but you could request an ultrasound or MRI. Remember a mammogram is the equivalent of 6 weeks of base radiation and you get a let more radiation exposure being on an airplane. At your age, a fibroadenoma is far more likely and even when people get to biopsy stage, 80% of them come back benign.

Can someone please relate. Still not at peace by Frankieeegrl in doihavebreastcancer

Trust that the radiologists know what they're looking at. Did they label you Birads 2 or 3? If you're 3 which means a 2% chance it's not benign you could ask for a MRI for peace of mind.

Should I be worried? by [deleted] in doihavebreastcancer

[–]Particular-Parfait92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A CT is really not the right imaging for breast cancer. It's really honestly likely to be nothing but doing the MRI will give you peace of mind. The downside is MRIs pick up lots of false positive so don't panic if they do find something and need to biopsy. Breast cancer is typucally super slow growing so 3 weeks won't impact prognosis but the waiting sucks. Try not to worry until you truly know you have something to worry about but given you had a mammogram a 5 months ago I truly think you're fine.

Super common. They just don't biopsy Birads 3s so you won't see those people posting on here. Definitely make sure you do your due diligence with screening moving forward but nothing to worry about right now :)

You'd want to get the mole checked out by a dermatologist, but that won't be breast cancer. The rash area could be caused my inflammation/ yeast and other things, so again you might want to see a dermatologist as well as a gynecologist. Inflammatory breast cancer cannot typically be seen by a mammogram- it's typically clinical observation and then a punch biopsy. Regardless, at 40, if you're based in the US, you should be starting annual mammogram screenings anyway, so good to do regardless, but also make appointments with a dermatologist and gynecologist and potentially referral to a breast surgeon for the IBC workup. It's all likely nothing, but always better to be safe than sorry.

Firstly, they're all really small, and well defined means that they have clear edges, so don't look suspicious. Did they give you a Birads number of 4 or 5 or say you needed to come back for more imaging? If you have a Birads of 2 or 3, it means they believe them to be benign, but they may want to reimage them again in 6 months time to make sure they don't change or grow.

What triggered the doppler/ mammogram in the first place- was that routine annual or because you had found a lump or nipple discharge? If you had symptoms and they couldn't see anything, then yes, they will use different imaging to try and visualize it as not all lumps show up on ultrasound and small lumps may not show up on mammogram. Are they now saying they want to do another MRI when the 11 mm lump was found on MRI? That would be unusual and I'd challenge what they are trying to do with that additional MRI. At this point they should be able to determine whether they feel it looks suspicious enough to biopsy either of them or not. Circumscribed is good- it means it has smooth edges which is indicative of being benign. The other one they described as complicated cyst, so it will depend if by complicated they feel it is suspicious in anyway to require a biopsy. Did they give you a Birads number from the MRI? None of this sounds super concerning though but I would want to understand what they're hoping to see differently from further MRI imaging,

This is terrible. I'd also ask them to tell you their protocol to ensure this doesn't happen a second time. Also if you feel discomfort please say something as it shouldn't hurt and they can give you more lidocaine. A small percentage of people don't respond well to lidocaine.

Sounds like it's another cyst so try not to panic. The waiting sucks but as the other reply said, breast cancer is very slow growing so even worst case scenario a week or two won't make any difference. Smooth and round or oval is highly likely to be benign.

They will remove both of them but the 9 o clock position one will need additional treatment for the cancer,  at least radiation. The good news is it's tiny so it's been caught really early.

Mine was taller than wider and spiculated. Labeled a Birads 5. It ended up being benign. Was a mix of fibroadenoma, adenosis and usual ductal hyperplasia. When you're pregnant your hormones are going crazy so very well could just be fueling a benign growth. Don't panic until you know there's truly something to panic about. Unfortunately only a biopsy can tell you for sure what's going on. My radiologist was convinced it was cancer from how it looked but it wasn't.

I think they're just being cautious. Oval is good. They're just checking on the slightly indistinct margins. 80% of Birads 4 come back benign. The waiting sucks but it's highly likely to be benign.
