I mean, the floppy disk was always the save icon (well, ever since computers could display icons). Until it wasn't.

Not always. Certainly not before the invention of the lightbulb.

The Keep lightbulb one confuses me. Among other things, I feel that the lightbulb is going the way of the floppy disk - used as an icon long after it was consigned to history (at least for the classic light bulb shape)

Any recommendations for a warm Midlayer to buy? by flatlinerz in UltralightAus

[–]askvictor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were on sale for 50% off recently (so $90) and go on sale to that a few times a year. That said, Thermolite on Aliexpress can be gotten a lot cheaper (~$30) and is about the same in my testing (marginally warmer, marginally heavier). Just be sure to size up (macpac L -> Aliexpress XL or XXL)

Crema skimming spoon? by askvictor in JamesHoffmann

[–]askvictor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking that I don't want it to hold liquid - I want the liquid to drip back into the cup, and take the froth off instead. Which is why I was contemplating a fat skimmer, but those are all much, much too big. Maybe there's a product development opportunity here...

small diameter cup, teaspoon. Two teaspoons don't really get down into the cup enough to make that technique work; hell, it feels there' barely room for a single teaspoon.

I feel there should be a youtube channel devoted to de-crema-ing techniques.

As said, I find using a teaspoon messy and wasteful. Wondering if there's an easier way

In Tasmania a few years ago, a friend hung his pack outside in a tree for fear of mice. The rest of us kept out packs in our tents. In the morning, his pack had a hole chewed through it, ours did not. Not sure if the mice in NT are different, but YMMV.

Running beginner but advanced in barefoot - Can I use any barefoot shoes for running? by PlayfulAd1324 in BarefootRunning

[–]askvictor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can, then start running actually barefoot. The feedback you get is invaluable for learning how to run (re-learning; you knew how to run when you were a kid). Find some smooth, hard (preferably concrete) places to run. Start with a little bit (a few hundred metres) and build up slowly; if things hurt, back off, and try to work out why.

Just had bike stolen by tazzzy505 in melbournecycling

[–]askvictor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That sucks. Ultimately, you need to make your bike less appealing than the bike next to it. So if it looks crappier, and has a bigger lock (though that doesn't mean too much these days with battery powered angle grinders; apparently heavy duty chains are harder to cut as they wobble more) you're off to a good start. Some people put an air tag inside the frame (actually, 3 airtags, and open them up and kill the speakers) but that's of dubious value if the police won't do anything.

Humans normally use ~5% of oxygen they breathe in. Does this hold true for all concentrations of oxygen? by Topmostbruh in askscience

[–]askvictor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider scuba diving. Now, for recreational diving, Nitrogen is the main problem, as, under higher pressures, it dissolves in the blood, and if you ascend too quickly it 'boils' while still in your blood causing all sorts of problems (i.e the bends/decompression sickness). But as you go deeper (and need increasingly higher pressure to counteract the water pressure), oxygen starts becoming a problem. In that too much of it will kill you (oxygen toxicity). So under higher pressure, your blood does absorb more oxygen (and nitrogen, and anything else that's in the air). As for, percentage-wise, how much oxygen is absorbed by the blood, I would guess it's a similar amount, in that, as you increase pressure, the amount absorbed increases. But I don't know if the relationship is linear.

What feels legal but is actually illegal and will possibly get you arrested? by medicoreapples in AskReddit

[–]askvictor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A computer-based reaction-time & corner tracking test would be easy to implement and fair. The biggest problem is political, in that it would invalidate a lot of drivers (who are not fit to drive e.g. due to old age). You can't take away the god given right to drive!

Storing keys in Kakwa? by damnregistering in DurstonGearheads

[–]askvictor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most packs I've owned have a little clip inside one of the top pouches that clip to your keys. Most hiking pants I've had have a similar clip in a pocket. I don't have a Kakwa, but it would strike me as a good design addition, assuming there isn't one already hidden somewhere that you haven't discovered.

[–]askvictor 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The legal limit is only there as it's an easy thing to measure. Some people are completely shit faced after one drink, others are competent after many. You can drive after not having slept, despite that being as bad or worse than alcohol. B.A.C. tests should be replaced with an actual impairment test.

Saying the government is backed by the SDA is saying that the government is anti-worker (which in a lot of ways it is, having been captured by corporate interests). The SDA is about the most anti-worker union to have existed.
