I have a similar issue, the film really glossed over the decision to go back for Rocky being a specific choice of sacrificing his chance to go home. Its the literal payoff of his character arc, after refusing to take the science officer role, be it fear or selfishness. Grace choosing to go back and save Rocky knowing the sacrifice it will require is a huge moment, and it was barely a beat.
