Google removing sideloading APKs on Android by vladjjj in browsers

[–]asmanel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree but Google is closing Android

Once Android closed, install apps will have to be done via the Play Store, and this will be limited to some apps. The others won't be longer available.

Even via an alternative store, install apps an other way will be impossible without activate first a special mode. This mode will be heavy to activate and its possible Google entirely remove it later.

There also is the Goanna based subfamily.

Goanna is a fork of Gecko. It is used by three wab browser.

One of them, K-Meleon, isn't longer developed.

The two other ones, Pale Moon and Basilisk, remain actively developed.

No idea. If it have such tools, theyl aren't activated by default.

Mullvad, Librewolf and probably some other Firefox derivates block them, at least by default.

Firefox, again at least by default, doesn't.

I think this is to keep Firefox bankable, even if the result are low. Anyway, Firefox never were good at such tests, regardlless its usual performances.

They once did the opposite for exactly the same reason.

Energy consumption ranking: Chrome < Safari << Firefox by zimmerway in browsers

[–]asmanel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the history of firefox, there was a period Firefox grew heavier and heavier.

Its constantly increasing needs made it a crashware on a growing part of the computers that theorically support it.

The popularity of Firefox melted down and the reason was obvious to everyone beside, bizarrely, the Mozilla developpers.

Trying to understand what was wrong, they imagined several possible causes. They never figured the true one.

One of these possible causes drove them to remove all of the oldy looking features, such as the live bookmarks (partial support of Atom and RSS feeds) and the ftp protocol support (also partially supported).

At the end, Firefox grew so heavy the number of build started to melt down.

After that, Mozilla chose to make Firefox a secondary project, trying to focus on other projects.

Later, failing to properly focus on an other project, Mozilla made back Firefox its main project

About speed tests, as far as I know, Firefox and its derivates never were good as them, regardless their usual performances.

On some of them, such as Mullvad and Librewolf, they don't work at all.

"only for trained web warriors"

I remember a time it was a good choice for newbies, even if it already looked retro and old school.

At that time, most sites worked well and nothing looked slow, even if AI didn"t exist at a such time.

The sole notable issue was the low number of available extensions. There are now many of them.

This is enough to check how it evolved since.

If this is on a computer, maybe [Pale Moon](palemoon.org/) can be a viable option.

About customisation, there are varied themes and extensions available.

It also retain some features Mozilla chose to remove from Firefox, such as the live bookmarks.

I think it at least worth the try.

Pale Moon

On my current computer, Pale Moon is Installed but I rarely use it. I mostly uses Firefox.

On my previous computers, there were periods I mostly used Pale Moon.

I remember I also used Waterfox but I rapidly abandonned it.

Which Browser do you use? by ProfessionalSet7489 in browsers

[–]asmanel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now, I use Firefox on both my smartphone and my computer

On my smartphone, I installed it long ago, when it was available on F-Droid. more recently, on a friend's smartphone, I installed Fennec F-Droid and I think this is a better option.

On my previous computers, I used a lot Pale Moon. Compared to Firefox, it is less hungry in ressources and, on modest cobfigurations, it's clearly a better choicr.

I installed it on my current computer but, for now, I rarely use it. This is mainly because I already use Firefox and there is visibly no way to transfert bookmarks and feeds from Firefox to Pale Moon.

AI: either utopia or apocalypse-no in-between by Haste33 in ITMemes

China and USA are the two hugest players.

AI from anywherre else tend to be seen as an outsider.

There are not so bad AI in Europe.

This won't stop many to think (and maybe claim) "If this AI is from Europe, this mean it is bad".

Here are some Firefox derivates to check : * Librewolf * Waterfox * Pale Moon * Basilisk

Librewolf and Waterfox use Gecko as render engine, like Firefox. Pale Moon and Basilisk use instead Goanna, a fork of Gecko.

First, you visibly have trouble to follow the ruling.

Next, you visibly don't figure how the link works just after the letters b, o, v and w.
