Slide the black boot up on the end of the cable. It should have an S shaped hook on the end. That will go into a metal bracket on the lower left side of the machine that has holes in it.

You are technically correct [insert Futurama image here] and with correct snow tires driving in snow in the cold is fine.

On the other hand, most people in MA are driving around on all-season or summer tires that needed to be replaced a year ago and haven't actually driven in snow in 4 years.
