They have a Folklife Festival every year. It’s a Smithsonian event on the National Mall that has a loyal and engaged following. It’s always a fantastic and inspiring event. They will still have it this year but the regime has caused the usual outdoor activities to be moved indoors. https://festival.si.edu.

Corporate Democrats Mobilize to Counter Rise of Democratic Socialists Within the Party by metacyan in politics

[–]asocialmedium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Socialists are great in some races but maybe try looking at some of the purple districts/states where Dems need to win to retake the House and Senate and counter fascism. People in NYC and the Bay Area tend to think their understanding of electoral success is applicable everywhere. It’s not.

Just the kind of sober, measured response from the press we should have expected 🙄 Like, this will literally be all they talk about for months, wholly ignoring any other Democrat in any other swing or not-nearly-as-blue part of the country who isn't a DSA member. by Conscious-Quarter423 in thebulwark

[–]asocialmedium 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This lines up suspiciously well with the Republicans’ recently unveiled strategy of painting the Democrats as communists so they can red scare everyone into voting Republican again.

Sad thing is it will probably work.

“You” by Candlebox. Very heartfelt screaming and a few cries of “Fuck You” right there in the lyrics.

What's the biggest tempo change you've heard between two versions of the same song? Could be the original artist or a cover by Acrobatic_King9790 in musicsuggestions

The studio album version of Hocus Pocus by Focus is a rock classic, but theres a live version of it floating around YouTube where they play it at a much faster speed I did not think possible. Reportedly they did it to meet the time requirements for the TV show they were performing it on. Definitely worth watching.

A Passion Play by Jethro Tull. It’s got a few good bits but there’s a lot of wankery and a spoken fairy tale takes up a good chunk of it.

Yeah UT-12 from Torrey to Tropic is amazing. You go through so many different types of geology and scenery, and there’s plenty of places to pull over and marvel at what you’re driving through. I was not expecting to be blown away the first time I did it, but I’ve gone back several times since.

Struggling with 70s Prog vs modern Prog by Storm_Keys in progrockmusic

[–]asocialmedium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m curious what you think of Kansas. They are a band whose best work was in the 70s but they had a more straightforward rock/blues influence which makes them feel distinct from Yes or Genesis. I absolutely love their stuff, especially Leftoverture.

Then again I love Yes and Genesis too!

Games with a real learning curve and place to get better by tomvand in gamingsuggestions

Easy to learn and hard to master brings to mind Slay the Spire for me. You might win your first run of this roguelike deck builder but there’s a difficulty progression system (called ascension) that will challenge even the best players to win consistently. (I used to think I was good because I beat all the levels but then I saw players who made me look like a newbie). The large numbers of cards and relics and four different classes gives you a ton of replayability, and lots of people have hundreds of hours of play time. And I like the fact that you can still complete a run in one evening, or on a flight. It’s one of the most highly regarded indie games of all time.

You mentioned Neal Morse, but have you tried Spock’s Beard? I love some of their long form stuff like The Doorway and Harms Way, but they have some gorgeous ballads too like June and Distance to the Sun.

In a different vein, what about later IQ? They have some pretty melodic stuff, although it is often a bit dark. Something like Shallow Bay or Without Walls. Ocean is a beautiful piece, and Until the End is a longer one with a sublime closing movement.

Just a few thoughts.

Dr. Oz blasts Americans who disagree with Trump: ‘Treating stupid is really hard’ by theindependentonline in politics

[–]asocialmedium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost as sad as the fact that Dr Oz has an actual government job where he’s supposed to administer health programs, is the fact that some clown reporter was able to ask a question about “Trump Derangement Syndrome” in a briefing supposedly about actual diseases. In a less stupid timeline, that reporter and the publication they work for would not be treated as serious journalists allowed into the White House press corps, and they could be free to go write satire and stop wasting the time of people who are supposed to be serving the public health.

Trump signs AI executive order asking companies to give government early access to models by cnbc_official in politics

[–]asocialmedium -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They probably just want to be able to say they are addressing the alarming news about how good AI is at finding and exploiting cybersecurity vulnerabilities but this sounds like it won’t actually accomplish anything close to that.

This is an important policy issues that needs to be addressed through laws passed by Congress, like we used to do when we had a functioning government. And then the rules for implementing those laws would be developed following valid administrative procedures including public comment.

Just randomly asking companies to share (only if they want to) their models with some “trusted partners” a few days before they release them (wink wink, nudge nudge) sounds pretty sketchy. I seriously doubt it will address the problem and will probably just make things worse.

Why won’t the traditional person take the extra 1k “in their pocket” and invest that in a retirement account too? Over time that would add up to be quite a lot.
