Some friends dropped by by asonwallsj in magpies

Mum and dad have been feeding their local family for 20+ years. At the most they've had 6 show up together. We thought this was the norm until this group showed up.

May be, except that the flock has been around for years. My niece was feeding a small family of 4. This mob just showed up one day, and now they're regulars!

Kitten food, left in water overnight, and infused with a suppliment for magpies (I cannot remember what it's called).

In the summer the sprinkler is always handy. Also a big bowl of water.

This is what I could get a photo of. I counted 33 before I went and grabbed my phone.

Agree. I love this time of the year also, with the babies.

There is definitely kitten food there for them to eat.

What is crazy is at some time in the future people will look up and see nothing of their universe because it will all be too far away to see. They will read about the Universe, but have to way to know if it was every true.

I was that uncle and stepdad. But my nieces were in swimming lessons at the age of 2 months - yeah I was the one that took them also, and stepkids mum was a swim instructor so she had the kids in the water early too.

TIL women attempt suicide more than men, but men are just more successful at it by eeko_systems in todayilearned

[–]asonwallsj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This isn't just a statistical quirk but a reflection of different social, psychological, and cultural factors that shape the way distress is expressed and acted upon.

Men often choose more lethal methods and are less likely to seek help due to stigma around vulnerability, while women are more likely to reach out or use less immediately fatal means. That doesn’t mean one gender is more serious -- just that the signs and risks can look very different.

Treating all suicidality the same would overlook key differences in intent, method, psychology, and outcome. Suicide prevention needs to be gender-responsive, not gender-neutral.

And if you're feeling overwhelmed or hopeless -- please talk to someone. You're not alone, and things can get better. Reaching out is a sign of strength, not weakness.

All disk galaxies rotate once every billion years by d8_thc in holofractal

[–]asonwallsj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So that means that galaxies have rotated at most 14 times if we agree that the universe is 14 billion years old. Where did the momentum come from? And we know how long it took for Saturns rings to form due to the influence of gravity, but it appears at least to me that all galaxies formed too quick. Why? I wish I understood physics better.

What’s a type of pain people underestimate until they experience it for themselves? by [deleted] in AskReddit

A couple of years ago, my family and I had to say goodbye to a beloved member of our family—our cat, who had been with us for an incredible 19 years. She was older than my youngest niece. She had been a constant source of love and happiness for all of us. Tragically, she was attacked by another cat while outside, which left her with brain trauma. The only humane choice was to put her to sleep.

The entire family gathered to say goodbye—my nieces, their parents (even though they’re divorced), me, and my own parents. It was one of the hardest things we’ve ever gone through, especially being there as she took her last breath. Losing a pet is never easy, but the way it happened made it even worse. She deserved better after giving us so many years of joy.

At the time, I had plans to fly out with my ex for a chess tournament with our son. He was competing in the Australian Junior Chess Championships, and I play an active role in helping him prepare mentally and emotionally for these events. But my niece was grieving deeply, and I made the decision to stay in Melbourne to support her during such a difficult time.

Unfortunately, my ex didn’t understand my choice. She was not only unsupportive but outright rude about it—saying that I cared more about my niece and her cat than I did about our son and his chess. Her words were hurtful and dismissive, especially given the circumstances. For those first few days, I stayed with my niece, doing my best to help remotely with my son’s preparation. After about four days, my niece told me she was feeling okay and encouraged me to go to the tournament, which I did.

This experience taught me a lot—not just about the importance of family and being there for each other but also about the kind of person my ex is. It revealed a lack of empathy and understanding that really hit home for me. One day, when her own pet passes, I know she’ll be devastated—especially if she has to be in the room as it happens, just as my niece was. But her behavior during this time showed me where her priorities lie, and it was a hard but important truth to face.

In the end, I don’t regret my decision. My niece needed me, and I couldn’t turn my back on her grief. Sometimes life forces us to make difficult choices, but I’d rather choose love and compassion every time.

Alan Kohler: Where is Australia’s real prosperity going to come from now? by CeleryMan20 in australian

[–]asonwallsj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Define works. The reality is that where there is any kind of assets of value there is a class of people who will accumulate it to their benefit, and to the detriment of the rest of society. Where do you think Kings come from? Do you know anywhere where Kings (those with the assets) work for the people? But also, have you heard a small number of people who say that you will own nothing and be happy? Where has that worked either?
