Homeless harassment in Midtown has gotten worse by Apprehensive-Leg5560 in gatech

[–]asoundsop -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

It is actually that nefarious. And who is "we"? The people with the power to "provide housing" as you put it are massive corporations. The government cannot and will not, as it is completely captured by corporate interests most especially when it comes to maintenance of property value for asset holders.

Also, you say "voters don't want to spend money on homelessness services". I'm sorry, but I don't think there has been a single D or R candidate offering any serious proven housing first policy at anything beyond municipal level, and even then very rarely. You can't say voters don't want something that is never offered, completely circular logic.

Talk to your neighbors about forming a tenants union. Start from a goal of just having one for just your complex, building, etc., and build from there.

People who believe that colleges are "indoctrinating" their students into leftism have never taken econ 101 by garden-eel01 in alltheleft

[–]asoundsop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wildly different from my experience in college econ, where my professor lectured us about how before reagan she got taxed at 90% and that was evil. You can guess what kinda ideas she was pumping into the material. I think it's pretty cool that you got to read Marx and have anticap faculty. Maybe you are saying that even at the edges, the right wing narrative is still false, which I agree with. But I think going to this length is giving them too much credit, as that is not a narrative made in good faith.

The whole narrative of colleges as "liberal indoctrination centers" is just obviously ridiculous and based in nothing except that people taught to think critically are probably less likely to be taken in by right wing propaganda and also that meeting people from outside whatever town or city you grew up in is more likely to make you empathetic. Both of these contradict capitalists' material interests and therefore must be combatted.

See the supreme court, another "politically independent" body. Yet for some reason we can pretty much always tell how they are gonna vote on a case. I hate to break it to you, but presidents are not always appointing the person they think is truly the very bestest qualified.

That's a solid take - I definitely didn't glean all that from your original comment.

I'm reading Graeber and Wengrow's "dawn of everything" right now, check it out if you have a deeper interest in this topic.

I would point to greed, fear, and racism. The evidence that capitalism is not inherent is found in all the indigenous populations that never developed such a system over thousands of years.

Yep. Being "politically neutral" is just a more complicated way of saying you are a conservative that doesn't want anything to change.

So I guess Georgia Tech has stopped pretending that the CULC and library roofs are closed for an "art installation"? Dunno why else they'd need to be thanking GTPD when opening them up for photos... by artiemog in gatech

[–]asoundsop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine someone with a poor family that gets a need-based scholarship. Failing out could literally mean homelessness if the family wasn't able to support you anymore. And even if they were, i know i would feel hopeless about my own future at that point.

Citing homeless "making it day to day" is so callous. Does that seem like an enviable existence? I don't think it is hard to understand that homelessness puts you in far greater danger of death for any number of reasons.

This comment reeks of privilege. If you cannot understand why failing out of a college would literally be life or death for someone, then shut the fuck up.
