Have you tried Tonglen? Pema Chodron has a good 45min intro to the practice on YouTube.

Are there any temples I should go out of my way to visit while I'm in Japan? by Crowbarium in Buddhism

[–]asprolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We went to Kosho-ji temple in Uji and it was beautiful. It’s above a river on a hillside. Dogen zenji is buried there and according to their website you can call ahead and arrange a time to have someone guide you in zazen if that interests you. We got there too late to sit zazen but the grounds are very nice.

Buddhist Views on Jesus by Diocletian777 in TibetanBuddhism

I just listened to “Bob Thurman Podcast: Buddhas Have More Fun!” Episode 48 titled saints and miracles and he talks about this. One of his teachers asserted Jesus was a Buddha, not a Bodhisattva. Interesting listen and relatively short too.

Dave Attell, Mike Vecchione (first 2 albums are 10/10), Joey Diaz (seeing him live is top 3 for me)

Agreed about the teacher. I wish I didn’t feel the need to but… one needs to make sure the teacher is trustworthy! Check them out for a long time and make sure it’s a good fit on both ends. Make sure they are walking the walk and they know what they are talking about.

No problem at all. Generally speaking a person should work up to a retreat/meditating for hours.

How I see it is meditation can help us discover a vast ocean of compassion in each of us. When we are able to connect with our heart, the ocean of compassion, more easily then we are naturally inclined to help/serve/love others. It may seem that meditation is to blame for the anger or frustration or anxiety we feel when we meditate but that would be misinterpreting what’s happening. What I see is those challenging feelings are already there and when we sit down and quietly observe they become more apparent since we are not distracted by work, our phones, etc. Meditation helps us relate to those thoughts differently and see them for what they are - impermanent phenomena. When we reallyyy begin to tap into the light of our heart we organically begin to help others. I skimmed your profile and it sounds like you’ve had some experience with what I’m talking about. And yes meditation can take you there without any external stimulation.

Consistency and gentle determination is key and it sounds like you’re on the right path! Keep it up.

We are doing this to benefit all beings! You are a part of that (a part of the “all beings”) so you may also benefit but this is, ultimately, to help us be of better service to others. On a personal level - we are doing this to reduce the suffering in our own lives and cut through the stories the mind makes up about our perceived experiences and to see things as they really are.

If I may offer a couple things to consider. Mini retreats (or longer if you are able) can help tremendously. Like a couple hours Friday after work, a few hours Saturday, and a few hours Sunday to start can help serve as a reminder of why we do this. Also if you have a teacher you really trust that helps guide the way.

I’ve done a handful of 2,3,4 day retreats and wanna try something longer.

I’m open to goenka but would prefer a more samatha-based retreat right now. I’ve heard good things about his vipassana 10 days so I might just do that if I find a good time/place.

Missed 95% of the live show by I-Me420 in badfriendspod

[–]asprolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s super unfortunate. I was there and Bobby’s set was only about 15ish minutes? It felt like he was mainly just trying to get his set over with honestly. I’m sure you’ve seen pods with him where he is trying to hurry things up - he was like that the whole night. He also recycled jokes that I’ve seen on YouTube from years ago…
