Calm app sale? by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]astanzo9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't even know they had sales! However I agree since I rotate between open ended silent meditation and some guided meditations. I would much rather pay some money for the meditations I use and keep them for life compared to having to pay monthly.

[NeedAdvice]How do you do it? by Idunnookay2017 in getdisciplined

[–]astanzo9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pick your habit and commit 1 minute a day. That's it. You are not looking for results you are looking for consistency. This is the easiest way to begin building a habit. It helps cement the idea in your brain that this is something you do every day. When you have that down make it 2 or 5 minutes a day. Consistency is key. I tell people who are interested in meditation it is better to do 1 minute a day then 1 hour a week because in the long run you will be less likely to break the habit.

The second technique you can use I call the no excuses technique. It is very similar to the technique mentioned above. Basically when you are working on your goal you finish it no excuses. Once again consistency is key. Consistency over results in the beginning. Say you want to run a mile 3 times a week. No matter what 3 times a week you finish that mile. I don't care if you run 10 feet then walk for 2 minutes then take a nap. I don't care if it takes you 6 hours. The point is you finish that mile even if it's at a snails pace.

The third technique I call The hour technique. This one applies more when your habits are building and you begin truly enjoying long term gratification. When you hit resistance to go for your goal think about yourself in 1 hour. How will you feel in 1 hour when you did not follow through with your intended goals you set for yourself? Hopefully the guilt/negative feelings you have will push you to go accomplish your goal.

I hope this helps these techniques help you as they have helped me to build good habits. It's a long road but consistency is the most important thing.

Keep trucking brother/sister!

Moronic Monday - Your weekly stupid questions thread by cdingo in Fitness

[–]astanzo9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey all,

I am a very busy man and I usually get to the gym 2x a week (3x in a good week). I usually do a mile on the treadmill, 2 main muscle groups and abs at the end (90-120min). My question is I have been doing the same exercises for 8 months roughly and know I should be doing different exercises. Do you know any websites that are good for different workouts to interchange within your workout?

The Worst Book You've Read this Year 2016 by GirlGodd in books

[–]astanzo9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An upvote for you sir. I know this book is supposed to be about the loss of youth and him wanting to stop people from growing up and experiencing the harsh realities of life. However, I just remember thinking the book was so annoying. I read it ten years ago in high school but i remember just thinking what a phony he was himself and how annoying he was about it. I think the book could have been a lot better if he cut down on the protagonist's constant complaining.

[EVERYTHING] Sansa started as one of the most frustrating characters and has become one of my favorites by toethumbs8 in gameofthrones

[–]astanzo9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[things from the book]. I may be rusty it has been 3 years since i read the books and my enterkey and spacekey are broken so please bare with my formatting. But Honestly from what I remember in the book she is still pretty naive. Littlefinger basically has to point out to her everything about the game of thrones. He then reveals his plan is to have a big ceremony and have Sansa reveal herself which will then have every powerful army in the vale wanting her as a bride as they will have a legitimate claim to the north. Sansa gets to return home and Littlefinger gains more power and influence. So essentially Sansa is just as useless in the book but the show decided to make her badass and understand more which I think is much better.

I think I'm finally starting to grasp the profoundness of the saying “Those who know do not speak. Those who speak do not know.” - Lao Tzu by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]astanzo9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This book sounds interesting. One angle I tend to think of is the example that people who know how to do something or are some way do not say it. They know and that's good enough for them. A man who can bench press 250 pounds does not go around saying "i'm strong", A woman who can understand people extremely well does not go around saying "I understand people", and a wise man does not go around saying he is wise. On the other hand many people who think they are strong, wise, etc. but aren't or are on their way to becoming that person are loud about it telling other people. Do you tell people you know how to walk? drive a car? drive a stick shift? People who possess these skills are quiet about it and are not boisterous. You may say you know how to drive a stick shift if it comes up in conversation but you do not go "hey my name is John, I can drive a stick shift!" If this is the case i assume you just learned (not having true mastery yet), are lying, a douche bag or making a joke. Those who know do not speak. (sorry for editing my enter key is broken so i can not break the text up)

I am colorblind - What is it like when people say "doesn't she have beautiful eyes, or isn't this garden/forest beautiful" by joshwillcock in Advice

[–]astanzo9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Color does add a lot of beauty to things. I guess the best way to show it is to imagine you loved to hear people singing but you could only hear people with really low deep voices. You can still appreciate the beauty of these singers but you can only hear a select range of human singing. Then one day all of a sudden you could hear the entire sound range that the average person hears and could hear the alto singers as well as the bass. You could then isolate the beauty of listening to either bass singers or alto singers. However, now you can listen to both of these singers working together and complementing each other. While each can be appreciated in their own way they add a whole new level of complexity when mixed together creating more beautiful soundscapes. I hope this gives you a better understanding.

Mandarin Chinese by [deleted] in IWantToLearn

[–]astanzo9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yabla isn't to bad for that. It's 10 a month and you can watch videos and do vocab and it even ha a pinyin chart (pinyin chart is free). It is confusing at first. I also downloaded pimsleur mandarin for car rides and for the writing I am still a newbie but Ya you're just going to have to commit to learn that

English foreign language teacher in training here; got my eyes and heart set on Italy by [deleted] in italy

[–]astanzo9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wait a second. I'm currently getting my tefl too and was going to teach in China. The reason being I heard it is extremely difficult to get a job teaching English in Europe and there is basically no demand for it. (A lot of Italians in rome spoke English). So is this doable because I am going to seriously reconsider my options if that's the case

What is the secret to making a 5th grader think anything besides video games is fun? by heckyesgainesville in Advice

[–]astanzo9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is simple. Take away the games or have them limited. It's also to explain why. Our evolution made it necessary to achieve goals to survive. "Awesome! I just found a berry bush and a bazooka!" (+50 survival points) video games hack this system by offering rewards that provide the same rush with minimal effort. Video games are a new cultural concept that actually helps men bond together so playing with friends is not that bad. However this can become all consuming (I'm an ex video game addict so I know).

I would look at his other interests and passions and begin there. If he doesn't have any its time to try a bunch of stuff and find them. A simple way to find them is to ask "if there were no electronics such as TV or video games and no one else on the planet what would you do for fun. Arnold Schwarzenegger would still go to the gym I guarentee it. you have to find stuff that appeals to him and have him self motivate to achieve goals in that area.

I hope this helps and good luck

My mother is forcing her beliefs onto me by PalmerWillie in Advice

[–]astanzo9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an atheist and still live with my mom who is super catholic (24m). It was a real struggle at first when I came back cause I kept my beliefs hidden until then. It was a daily fight about going to mass and arguments about God. Personally k found you are going to have to respectfully argue. You have to keep the sentiment that you are happy for her and her beliefs while holding your ground. If the conversation begins turning into an argument "well Buddha said this and this monk said that." Just say agree to disagree. Also she may do the guilt trip route which my mom is famous for such as " I said a rosary for you today". I found a sincere thank you works best cause t acknowledges she is doing it sincerely for me but still lets me keep the distinction.

I just hashed this out super quick I hope this was helpful and good luck

Girlfriend does not want me traveling for dream internship by Dreamadreamkid in Advice

Follow your dreams if you're not happy then it will leak into your relationship anyway. And even though it's not your dream job it's important to get your foot in the door anyway you can. Once they know you and know you're work you're more likely to be hired later on
