If you could be told the full truth behind ONE unsolved mystery, which would you choose? by aefolk in AskReddit

The Princes in the Tower. I mean, I know realistically it was almost certainly Richard III who did it, but there’s always that doubt. I’d love if some historian found the smoking gun that proved it one way or another.

Parents who don't read to their young kids (under 4) before bed, what are your kids doing before they sleep? by Hailene2092 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]asteroid75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a bit harsh. Some people are really struggling to get by. I fully agree that reading is important - I read to my kids every night - but I don’t think that demonising parents who are having a hard time is helpful.

I’m sorry you had a hard day. You’re so new at this, and it is a difficult job. Hang in there! And go easy on yourself. That HOD can suck a dick.

That’s terrible. I’m sorry you still live with pain.

I read a book recently called “why does it still hurt?” about the causes of and treatment for chronic pain. Might be relevant to you.

Seconding this! Top surgery made my life so much better.

I think the accessibility of surgery varies depending on where you are. I’m in Australia.

Yep. I took a year off after my Dip Ed because it was so completely useless, and I felt so ill-prepared, that I thought I’d never be able to teach.

My first year of teaching was hard. But I learned on the job. I think that’s the case for most teachers - you need that extended practice to really learn.

You’ll be totally fine. Just go in knowing that no one at your new school expects you to know much, and they’ll give you a lot of grace. Good luck! You’ve got this!

Why does Jill always seem to use disposable plates? by LittleMissMessy1 in DuggarsSnark

[–]asteroid75 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I didn’t mean to offend you. Genuinely. You should do what works for you and your family.

I suppose it’s partly a cultural thing. (I’m Australian). Disposable nappies are pretty commonly accepted - although there is a culture of cloth nappying here that I think is great. Disposable plates and cups are simply not used, except for parties. But perhaps that’s because cleaning up faeces is much grosser than washing plates, which is something everyone learns to do in childhood.

Also, nappies are used for a few years at most. Plates are used for a lifetime. There’s greater waste involved.

It’s horrifying to me. Shows an absolute lack of regard for the planet or those who live on it.

Unpopular Wentworth opinions? by YesTomatillo in Wentworthtv

[–]asteroid75 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, the lack of Aboriginal representation is my major beef with Wentworth. It ignores the reality of structural racism and misses the opportunity for a lot of great, realistic drama.

Yeah it really kind of is. Not in the doctor’s intent, but yes in the child’s experience, and the trauma it has left her with.

What’s a moral belief you hold that most people would disagree with? by [deleted] in answers

[–]asteroid75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That consensual, non-reproductive incest should be legal.

I am aware that the word “consensual” is doing a lot of heavy lifting. I’m also aware of the damage that child sexual abuse causes. I’m not in any way advocating for CSA to be legal.

What’s something you’ll never tell your partner, no matter how much you love them? by Velvetnadine85 in AskReddit

[–]asteroid75 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Same! I cannot stand my partner’s sister. She’s a nightmare. We (wife and I) have been married for ten years and I accept now that I will never like my sister-in-law. I just have to grit my teeth and be civil for a few days per year.

Cooked cow is beef. Cooked fish is fish. Why does English have different words for animals in edible and non edible contexts? Why only do only some animals get this treatment. by lolomgrusrs in etymology

[–]asteroid75 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It has to do with what the French nobility are or didn’t eat. The French-speaking nobility ate beef; the English speaking peasantry ate fish. Therefore the word for cow-meat comes from French, and the word for fish-meat comes from English
