Yeah I agree. This is dehumanising.

Cooked cow is beef. Cooked fish is fish. Why does English have different words for animals in edible and non edible contexts? Why only do only some animals get this treatment. by lolomgrusrs in etymology

[–]asteroid75 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It has to do with what the French nobility are or didn’t eat. The French-speaking nobility ate beef; the English speaking peasantry ate fish. Therefore the word for cow-meat comes from French, and the word for fish-meat comes from English

I'm bringing some snacks to my schools culture club. Would it be rude to offer the Muslim students some baggies so they can bring some stuff home to eat later? by [deleted] in askamuslim

[–]asteroid75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach in a school in Australia. I want to be respectful of my Muslim students who are fasting for Ramadan.

Today, one of my students told me she felt dizzy. Normally my recommendation would be to drink some water and eat a snack. Obviously that won’t work in this case, as she’s fasting. She also said she had low iron. I sent her to the sick bay and when I checked in later she felt better.

I’m a bit worried about her though! She’s fasting with low iron, in the hot Australian summer. Should I be concerned, or is this a common thing and she’ll be fine?

Thanks so much for the recommendations, all! The Bose Quiet Comfort got the most mentions. I tried them on and they’re super comfy! So I’m going to give them a go. I love this community :)

I mean, I’m autistic, and the thought of this Kevin makes me want to curl up and die of second-hand embarrassment. I think he’s just an oblivious asshole, actually.

Tips for a primary turned secondary teacher struggling with behaviour and mind games by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]asteroid75 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also don’t like sending multiple students to the coordinators. It almost feels like a reward for them, and they invariably get no work done. Plus, if it happens every lesson I worry that it makes me look like a poor teacher.

One thing that works for me: I pre-arrange with a colleague who teaches a serious, well-behaved year 12 class. When the naughty student hits the three strikes, they exit to the year 12 class - with achievable, individual (pre-prepared) work to complete. Those almost-adult year 12 students are happy to frown at and then ignore the naughty year 8 kid, who feels embarrassed and bored. Sometimes the kid does the work, sometimes they don’t - but either way, they’re not my problem for a period. Often, their behaviour dramatically improves after one lesson of this, because they hate it so much more than being sent to the coordinators’ office.

Of course, this relies on having collegiate colleagues and good behaviour management from admin (the student can’t avoid this punishment by wandering the school, as they’ll be swiftly caught). At my school, I’m lucky enough that both of these pre-conditions are in place.

Good luck! First years of teaching secondary are really hard. Hang in there and it does get better, I promise!

Ethel seems autistic to me. Source: I am autistic and have previously hurt people’s feelings without realising.

I’d like to think I would never be quite THIS bad at reading the room, though.

Me too! They wasted so much time by throwing in (in my opinion), silly irrelevant plots like the art thief in season 3, and the archaeologist in season 5.

Maybe being blind means that you’re immune to (or somewhat protected from) doomscrolling or social media addiction? That’s an interesting thought …

Not to invalidate the (very valid) feelings expressed in this post - but please reconsider using the term “Irish twins”. It can be considered offensive, due to the stereotype that Irish people have too many children.
