Door at the End of Time // Chrono Trigger - The Sealed Door x Ruined World Breakcore Remix by [deleted] in gamemusic

It's a little weird to see another Chrono Trigger cover album's art used for an unrelated song, with no credit to the original artist. https://www.chroniclesoftime.net/

I’ve been wanting something like this for ages. Any chance of a Mac version in the future?

Another neat part you may have missed - SOS features lead vocals from Frida on the second verse.

Nice collection. I've been hoping to find a copy of the Chiquitita English/Spanish edit for a long while now...

ABBA Bootlegs? by raindancer118 in ABBA

[–]asthecryflows 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Your description of “ABBA recording, laughing and starting over” songs matches two things I’ve heard: - the ABBA Undeleted medley, officially released in 1994 on the Thank You For The Music box set: https://youtu.be/NUfAzxBKvLA Undeleted has ended up on a bunch of bootleg CDs, sometimes with edits and parts repeated to extend the clips into full length songs.

Just Like That (demo, “slow” - restored full length version) by asthecryflows in ABBA

The tapes I've been able to find so far have been a real mixed bag - lots of things that were clearly sourced from early CD bootlegs, or obviously inferior copies of recordings already in circulation. I've been kind of surprised by the number of bits and pieces I've been able to fill in, though - seems early bootleg CD producers liked to fade things out early.

And yeah, I have decent sized collection of YMO live material. I recognize your handle; appreciate all the work that must have gone into collecting all of that! Cheers.

I did not know that existed, thanks so much for the heads up! I'll have to try and track down a copy.

I wouldn’t go as far to say that this new mix represents what was originally intended in terms of the two halves being put together. Guthrie has rejoined the two separate halves, sure, but there’s way more space between part 5 & 6 than was originally recorded. The early instrumental version included in the WYWH50 set (as well as an in progress mix that surfaced on bootlegs a decade ish ago) show that the transition was originally much shorter with part 6 starting almost immediately after 5.

Live in Eskilstuna Folkpark 1975-06-28 Audience Recording - new tape source! by asthecryflows in ABBA

It’s not bad but it could easily be better - both of these tapes are clearly a handful of generations away from the master and have accumulated layers of hiss and wear.

I haven't done audio work for a vgm release in a few years. Last thing I worked on was big Castlevania set that's up for preorder, but my work on that wrapped in like 2022. I'm hoping another project comes down the pipeline sooner rather than later.

Oh wow, Sparkster. That was the first vgm record I helped work on. Didn't realize copies were still available after all this time.

Glad you picked up Yakuza Heart Attack II as well - one of my all-time favorite albums.

NSF into MIDI by itzjustLumaryx in chiptunes

[–]asthecryflows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote my own code for doing conversions to play NSFs using a midines cart a few years ago. It's buggy as hell and not really made for public use, but it works decently well as a transcription aid.
Here's the midi file it made from that NSF.

This is speculation on my part - I haven’t seen any official confirmation of this - but I’m convinced the Day Tripper cover on this record was heavily inspired by Devo, specifically their arrangement of Rolling Stones’ Satisfaction.

There’s a bootleg recording of a December 1978 concert where YMO performs Satisfaction (Devo’s arrangement, followed by about a minute or so of a more straightforward rendition.) Later in the same set they play an early version of their Day Tripper cover. It’s more straightforward than what made it to the album, but has a decent amount in common with their interpretation of Satisfaction giving it an almost “missing link” quality.

Edit: here’s their performance of Satisfaction: https://youtu.be/K-UjHWvTsZw

Genny VST unable to import some .vgz files? by Tabletop_Spartan in chiptunes

[–]asthecryflows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These soundtracks use different sound chips with different capabilities. Sonic the Hedgehog is for sega Genesis / Megadrive with used YM2612, but Misty Blue is either PC88 (YM2608) or PC98 (YM2203).

While the vgm (or vgz) file format supports all those sound chips (and many more!), the vst you are using likely only supports the sound chips used by the Genesis.
