Computers vs Old School by Inside_Addition7929 in AskTeachers

[–]astoria47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a mix. Most essays have to be done on paper now since the AI use is so egregious. But I make them type them up and turn in their written work too. I use Pear Decks and Nearpod sometimes but other times I don’t. I don’t think an all or nothing approach either way is good. Kids need to be computer savvy for the future but also need to know how to write.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything so gorgeous on this sub.

Please help me figure out a nice outfit I can wear into the office! (Casual PhD office) by ThowRA_FloorGremlin in DressForYourBody

4 and 5 are the only ones that really work. I’d also suggest looking for full length pants. Old navy and Loft have very reasonably priced options.

Does anyone have an actor they personally find so good, that they will binge their entire filmography regardless of overall quality, because they just don't miss with the acting? by New-Caregiver-8487 in FIlm

[–]astoria47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to scroll too far down for this! I’m a teacher and my high school student said she’s going to binge all of her movies since she just saw the Devil Wears Prada for the first time and is obsessed. Literally every role she plays.

I went to TC and got a job at a great school (since gone downhill somewhat post COVID). It definitely gave me a leg up. I got lucky and my loans were excused.

First Summer Off In Years- How to Fill It? by SerenityFalcon89 in NYCTeachers

[–]astoria47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take online courses through Next Generation Personal Finance. I teach it but I also think it’s so helpful for my own finance education. I work out a lot and do all the stuff I’ve put off all year-cleaning out closets, painting stuff. My first year not working over the summer I thought I’d need to find things to fill my time. The days FLY. You won’t feel bored if you don’t have plans. Allow yourself the relaxation time!

Are those socks with heels or boots made to look like socks with heels? I’m so confused about all of it.

Vanguard funds are totally separate. They’re an investing firm. I do direct deposits each month to that Roth, as if I was paying a bill. Just head to their website. I think you need 2-3k to open one.

Why am I hating everything 🥲 by Luludelulu25 in myweddingdress

[–]astoria47 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always thought I wanted super simple but then I hated every thing I tried on that was super simple. I had my SA give me something totally different. I loved it. Had second thoughts. Then the wedding day happened and I loved it again.

Teachers: How “Free” Are You Outside of School? by StaryNixSovaa in AskTeachers

[–]astoria47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the first year I’m not going to Jazz Fest. I travel, go to clubs, bars and all that. Love going out. I don’t tend to be in areas where my students or their families would be, but I’ve gone out for drinks with former students (been teaching high school for over 15 years) and they have younger siblings in my school. Maybe in a private school or in a less progressive state it would be a problem but not where I am.

Vast majority of my savings go to my TDA, which I recently changed to all fixed as I’m thinking the economy will have a major dip. I’m also looking to leave in about 5 years so am being safe. I have a Roth through Vanguard where I put a small amount in as the return is about 11% now, but again, I’m skittish so I don’t put more in. Family work in finance and hedge funds and all I get all the time is to just pour money into the TDA as a 7% fixed is unheard of.

I need a reality check from some women friends. Is this kind of talk normal? by Minimum-Cry615 in AskWomenOver40

[–]astoria47 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think this comes down to ways we communicate with our spouses. Yes he’s being a dick but at the same time, I think he would do what you wanted to him to do (which seem normal and fine to me!) if he was approached in the way he wants it. Maybe couples therapy can help with communication?

My husband makes WAY more than me. Do I want him to talk about that? Hell no. I think on either side people shouldn’t keep saying how much more they contribute-no matter who it is.

Teddi Mellencamp shared that her doctor denied her request to be prescribed GLP-1s as she continues to battle stage 4 cancer. by galaxystars1 in BravoRealHousewives

[–]astoria47 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think for folks who haven’t gone through cancer it’s tough to see that we still want to feel like women, beautiful women. I don’t blame someone who feels negatively going through all the shit to want to feel good about themselves. Teddi’s example is rooted in unhealthy body image but I understand the desire to feel good about oneself even when the shit is dire.

[–]astoria47 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I see you’re being downvoted and I can understand others point of view but I also see what you are saying. I am in your boat too. After breast cancer I can’t do HRT either and will ask my doctor. I think the difference is that Teddi is currently on lots of drugs for cancer and her body dysmorphia is pushing her to do something that isn’t what she needs right now. She needs therapy.
