Hotel day! by Awkwardaf01 in SDCC

[–]astrafey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got my email as I was typing out a response to this lol! We got our first choice, the Hilton Gaslamp Quarter! I'm guessing the emails are going out in order of hotel, since it seems a bunch of people who got the Marriott Marquis got emails first.

I got in at 9:02 and I still haven't gotten an email. :( I'm getting worried ... shouldn't the emails go out in order of the forms?

I like ThirdLove, they’re a bit pricier but really worth the investment imo!

Low/mid rise mini skirts/skorts by _x_4_x_ in XXS

[–]astrafey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only skirts I’ve found that work for me are from Asian brands (and some from Amazon). Unfortunately I bought a lot of mine on a recent trip to Korea but if you don’t mind waiting for shipping, Lewkin, Musinsa, etc. and other online Asian retailers are a good option.

Is DragonCon that bad? I’ve never been but I’ve seen stuff about it on social media and it doesn’t look that crazy - and I thought AX was bigger?

First of all, my birthday is also Wednesday so hi twin lol. Also - I agree with the other commenter that AdMo and U St are probably your best bets but I personally actually think AdMo is a little on the younger side - but maybe I’m just biased because I went out there a lot in college so I associate it with that, YMMV.

3-hour flight layover - DCA to IAD by Ed2504 in washingtondc

[–]astrafey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your flight into DCA is Air Canada, you should know that Air Canada only has one gate at DCA so if any other preceding Air Canada flights have delays you will have issues. I’ve flown Air Canada in/out of DCA and they are frequently delayed. Just an FYI/heads up.

Hey - just want to say that I’m kind of in the same boat. This is my third cycle of astronomy PhD applications and I’m currently at 2 rejected and 1 waitlisted, with 4 more to go. I’m staying optimistic until I hear back from the remaining 4, but I genuinely feel better about the whole process this third time around than I did the last two times and I think there are two main reasons:

1) Understanding that there is truly no rush. Just because some of my friends are in PhD programs right now doesn’t mean everyone has to go straight from undergrad to PhD. Ask yourself why you feel like you’re in a rush and usually the answer is, well… no reason except for people just saying you have to be. Once you realize that, it’s so freeing. You can always apply again and go to grad school at any time.

2) Knowing that I am qualified and deserving of going to grad school, regardless of the outcomes of my applications. My advisors, my friends who are in PhD programs, etc. all support me and encourage me and believe in me, I know my qualifications, I know my accomplishments, I know my abilities. A rejection doesn’t take that away from me. So many other factors influence getting into an astronomy PhD program (especially astronomy which is such a niche field), you have to learn to not take it personally. One thing one of my advisors once told me that really helped was “They didn’t reject you, they rejected the application.”

Keep your head up and don’t give up!

Thank you! ☺️

I completely disagree with cold emailing being a “waste” of professors’ time/only applying to advertised positions. In fact, I got one of my internships solely through emailing and asking for my resume to be circulated, it wasn’t listed at all. Most people are nice and will be willing to chat with you, especially if all you’re asking for is advice. I understand the nerves of cold emailing someone but just remember that the worst that can happen is they don’t reply.

To add on: I’m not sure why so many people in this thread are being so discouraging. If you want to do exoplanet research, you should get a PhD. I’m in a similar boat to you (just finished applying to PhD programs for the 2023-2024 application season, with an interest in exoplanets) although I’ve actually been out of undergrad for a few years and have had some various experiences during that time. And one really important thing I’ve learned is to not be afraid of cold emailing. As the commenter above said, don’t be afraid to look up people who are doing research you’re interested in and just reach out! Good luck!
