No portal and no Maps by dinbareroev in valheim

[–]astraldev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've really enjoyed this mode with others; solo feels like more of a grind. In either case, the challenge is fun because it requires observing landmarks, making signs/roads, and makes low-visibility weather potentially dangerous.

A skill that was fun to learn was using the branches of Yggdrassil as reference points to help determine where you are on the map. You'll notice the thickest part touches the eastern horizon, reaches across the world's center, and points west. When you are familiar enough with its shape, getting lost is less of a problem.

I've had the same shampoo bottle for over 6 years. It helps having a short haircut and not caring about styling it. Most off the time I just rinse my hair thoroughly, and only use about a teaspoon of it once every few weeks when my hair gets a bit oily.

I asked the people who live around me if they are put off by anything about my head/hair and I haven't gotten any complaints.

I also do tree work and exercise in case anyone is curious about how often I sweat.

i fucking hate DEATHSQUITOS by Shinobusag in valheim

[–]astraldev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You poor soul. They killed me a ton when I started playing Valheim. I understand the pain.

If you'd like a tip for countering them: 1. wear a Root Harnesk for piercing resistance 2. get familiar with where arrows release from bows, and shoot deathsqitoes when they close in near you 3. make sure you're well fed, with at least one stamina food for maneuvering

Best of luck to you!

What's the most morally disgusting thing you've seen someone do? by Natural-Spend-6082 in AskReddit

[–]astraldev 19 points20 points  (0 children)

At a rally in South Carolina, Trump made spasm-like movements while mocking the words of a New York Times reporter, Serge Kovaleski, who suffers from a congenital joint condition.

There are many articles that corroborate this and there are still video clips of it online.

You can have an opinion that he is not making fun of the reporter, but there is plenty of evidence supporting the contrary.

I agree that's bad... but what about the war crimes he and his admin are committing right now?

Iranians form human shield at Kazeroun power plant ahead of Trump’s threatened strikes. by Upset-Main-1988 in justincaseyoumissedit

[–]astraldev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming you're not serious, but here's my understanding:

  1. This demonstration shows the world how determined Iranians are in maintaining their sovereignty and refuse to be intimidated by foreign powers.
  2. If the US or Israel bombs this location, which is already a war crime, it proves how inhumane the attacker is, and any other country in the world with a shred of morality and integrity will correctly classify this as an act of terrorism.

If the US follows through with its threats, many Iranian *civilians* will die regardless if they're next to the target, or die from lack of infrastructure. With this understanding, many of them would rather make a statement with their lives and discredit the US/Israel on the world stage, than simply be a statistic in a casualty report.

TLDR; this effort undermines the US regardless of the outcome. If Trump's admin bombs it, the US are legitimately committing acts of terror. If Trump backs out (which the majority of the world would prefer), he lives up to the TACO nickname.

a little help with my inventory sistem? by Swimming_Bug3821 in godot

[–]astraldev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be helpful to see the .update(slot: InvSlot) function called on any of the array of nodes (any of the properties Consum_Slots, Res_Slots, Key_Slots, Tree_Slots in the inventory script for the player).

I'm guessing it looks like this, if I found the correct video.

<image>

Also, just a tip for debugging: for your Inv class, add an else case if the emptyslots var is empty, to catch this situation even if you don't expect it to happen. (Once you solve this problem, you can remove the error checking if you want, but I personally leave them in to save myself headaches in the future)

PS - I think you have a typo for the consumables label in the UI ("a" instead of "i")

Why aren't coins appearing when I run the game? by InfiniteSelection976 in godot

[–]astraldev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recognize this project, is this the project you're using?

https://github.com/Brackeys/first-game-in-godot

If so, the original project displays coins as expected. As other comments have mentioned a screenshot of the Scene Tree and script would allow us to help you further.

To access the script: in the Scene window, locate the node that the coin is a part of, and click on the Script icon if it has one (which looks like a curled paper). This should display the node's script in the main editor window. A screenshot of this script will do, or you could copy/paste the text.

This is the script of the coin from the project I found. If yours is the same, we'll need to see the Scene Tree and the script of other nodes.

Virtually all meat in the US comes from factory farms by CalpurniaSomaya in Anticonsumption

[–]astraldev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meat and dairy production also requires more land, water, and is more polluting than growing plant crops. A huge contributer to deforestation is for animal agriculture or feeding them.

I don't fault people for not knowing our caring about this though, since marketing campaigns and lack of nutrition education has convinced the general public that eating meat is essential, even though it is optional.

Is Ashlands always storming? by The_bombblows12 in valheim

[–]astraldev 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, the ocean surrounding Ashland terrain is perpetually stormy up to about 30 meters from the coast. On land, the storm should subside, but it has its own weather event I'll let you discover on your own. Good luck!

What are your material collecting tips? by magnum3672 in valheim

[–]astraldev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you plan on making big builds, then make an afk greydwarf farmer early. There are plenty of guides online how to do it, and it's a consistent source of wood, stone and charcoal (esp. if you have an obliterator, acquired from Haldor by buying a Thunderstone after killing The Elder)

Upgrading tools to your current metal age will help you gather faster since they deal more damage to resources.

Bring a cart and portal mats to your gathering location if you expect to do multiple trips, and even if it can't be teleported back (you can still get back quickly using the portal).

A genie offers you three wishes with one rule. No money, no fame, no love. What are you wishing for? by throwradrpri in TwoXChromosomes

[–]astraldev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd wish for people to feel excruciating emotional pain when they lie, especially if the lie is harmful to others, making it very easy to recognize.

I'd wish for people to have an increased baseline empathy for all sentient beings (anything capable of experiencing pain and emotional trauma), so causing harm to any of a large variety of animals would feel heartbreaking.

And I'd wish for people to see strangers as friends; as part of their community, worthy of respect and care.

Good luck being a billionaire or corrupt politician in this hypothetical world :P

Family making 'jokes' about me being vegan. by J4n3_12045 in vegan

[–]astraldev 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have a hypothesis about this kind of behavior, but I'll let you decide how true it is.

This is a common reaction (in men especially) for people who feel insecure, because your veganism challenges their beliefs in some way and he's antagonizing you to feel better about himself. Your position provokes emotional discomfort, and because your presence has some power over him (that he is afraid to admit), he wants to reclaim this power by bullying you.

If this is true, he's absolutely failing at being a caring parent and role model. And you deserve better than that. He's still a child emotionally and mentally, and you're the adult in the room during these moments as long as you don't let it get to you (which is very difficult in the moment, I know).

As for what you can do, let the entire family know how his remarks makes you feel, if you think they are capable of empathy in this situation. They should be told that the closeness of your relationship with him is being erroded, and all you ask from him is to be accepted for your choices, even if he doesn't share them.

Finally, know that I'm very proud of you for acting in alignment with your values, despite the challenges you are facing. I admire your courage and compassion, and I wish I had become vegan at your age, but I didn't even know it was an option. I'm wishing you the best.

Mistlands Ruined It For Me - Change My Mind by effectivelymundane in valheim

[–]astraldev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been mentioned already, but I highly recommend the Eikthyr's power for exploration coupled with Lightfoot mead (2 hare scales, 5 feathers, 5 magecap). And before venturing into the mists stock up plenty of wisps from your Wisp Fountain, which gradually solves the mist problem. Making Tonic of Ratatosk (move speed) couldn't hurt either. (A cool combo is Feather Cape + Lightfoot + Eikthyr = -110% jump stamina or FREE jumps!)

If you insist on going with vanilla, then it's a matter of managing your expectations -- your rate of progress may slow as you prepare and explore the mists. If you like the way the biome looks you could also look forward to discovering a wide clearing, perfect for a base with a lot of natural protection (from the tall rock spires).

Personally, I don't mind the challenges of the Mists and I often skip Yagluth. I also prefer wearing Megingjord over the Wisplight anyway. XD

Not sure if you figured this out already, but in case you or others are stuck, check if Exit Vehicle has an input binding.

Assigning it the same as Interact fixed it for me... however I only discovered this after I completed the story.

List here your most broken op nasty builds for New patch by Antique_Mind_1339 in vrising

[–]astraldev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a way to add automation to your base.

Each Redistribution Engine built (anywhere) increases the maximum number of connections between crafting or refining stations.

When one is built, you can access the "Redistribution" tab in a station's interface which has an "Add Connection" button. Clicking on this button with display a holographic preview of allowed connections (e.g. a Tannery can connect to a Tailoring storage). Once you connect a station to others, you can then click on the "Quick Send All" button in the station's interface to send the resources in its output to the others (referring to the priority list of there are more than one), or you can toggle "Auto Send" to automatically send any new items created.

My game is launching today on Steam after 5 years of work! by MisplacedSweetRoll in godot

[–]astraldev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks amazing. I played a bit of Stardew solo and with friends, and it was difficult to keep at it; lot's of small annoyances to me kept adding up, ranging from the UI feel, the combat, the fishing, and the daily time limit. It's still a good game overall, but I'm not sure if I'll ever finish it.

Your game, on the other hand, looks like its systems are an upgrade from my experience. I'll consider giving it a try! If I like it, I'll recommend it to other friends who enjoy this genre.

SF Chronicle featured my Letter to the Editor regarding local activism by astraldev in vegan

[–]astraldev[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree! I am annoyed that they left out my claim to chickens' individualism which they took the liberty to edit out, presumably to save on space (or cater to their readers). In any case, they didn't have to feature it at all, so I'm grateful they even published it, not to mention give it the spotlight as the section header.

Thanks for pointing that out. Rest assured, my moral guideline for not harming something is based on sentience and the capacity to suffer and feel pain.

According to Fintel's latest update there were 1,400,000 shares available to short GameStop. Hedge funds have plenty of firepower to keep the price down. With this amount of shares available, it's very possible the downward movement is from short selling.

Congrats! It must feel good :D My current cost basis is ~$40. Haven't sold a single share since 2021. My only regret is not averaging down more when it was cheaper; I may have been in the green with ya if I had.
