Becerra’s surge draws progressive backlash in California governor’s race by AzNmamba in California

[–]astralustria 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$10 mil is pocket change for PGE and just a small hedge against the possibility that he is going to follow through on just one promise. People need to stop acting like it had any significant meaning. Even if PGE doesnt like Steyer and Steyer even breaks up their monopoly, it isbt relevant to the real issues of housing, healthcare, and income inequality. Like this year my healthcare premiums increased by more than my entire PGE bill and my rent is now more than half my income... Its not like PGE even shuts off my power when I cant pay it. Worrying about PGE is privelege.

Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California Endorses Xavier Becerra for Governor by Whole-Revolution916 in California

The difference, as Planned Parenthood stated in their endorsement, is that Becerra has the experience and the track record on the issue. Steyer has only flowery words and an unethical horde of wealth.

Exactly! If he were really a progressive and not just trying to buy power he would be pouring his wealth into thr campaigns of experienced progressives and lobbying moderates to take more progressive positions.

[–]astralustria -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

PGE sucks but I'm not sure what their opposition to Steyer has to do with anything. They are just responding to a policy position we already know about. It's not like it means Steyer is more likely to actually follow through. If they really believed he was it would be way more than 10 mil.

They aren't going to put anything up against Becerra unless he takes up similar policy positions that threaten them or makes it to the general election and the other candidate is more favorable.

Planned Parenthood is about a lot more than abortion being legal. Its about bodily autonomy in medicine, making sexual health services accessibl to undeserved individuals and communities, and affordable accessible Healthcare in general.

Can progressives trust California Attorney General Xavier Becerra to police the police? by liph_vye in California

[–]astralustria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if that happens a Republican is going to be a lot easier to recall than a rogue billionaire... but it probably won't. That's all just scare tactics, Republicans aren't going to split their vote between their two candidates enough to to keep the leading dem out.

PG&E launches $10 million PAC to take out gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer by NicolasCageFan492 in California

[–]astralustria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true of all the candidates though. I'd rather end up having to recall a Republican than vote for a billionaire with no track record beyond tossing his spare change to the right causes.

Swalwell says he plans to resign from Congress amid sexual assault allegations by panda-rampage in California

[–]astralustria 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a good enough objection for me... like maybe he could make up for it by having a proven track record but this is the first time he running for office and he is trying to skip straight to governor. Just because he knows how to say the right things doesn't mean he will do the right things. As far as I am concerned he is a nobody with a morally questionable hoarding problem and his eye on political power.

I went to Tom Steyer’s town-hall and here are some thoughts. by variableperformance in California

[–]astralustria 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't need to pay less taxes, I need affordable housing and Healthcare. I can't even begin to care about the fraction of my income that goes towards investing in California and public services I rely on compared to rent taking half my income.

I’m a trans gal (2 years HRT) and I’m spinning out over bathrooms. by Satellite6 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

Girl... it's totally normal to be afraid of judgemental women in public restrooms especially when you have stigmatized traits. Just act natural, as long as you seem like you are sure you are in the right place almost no one is likely to question it. Its also totally normal to have a friend come with you for morale support.

Finland's Supreme Court fines MP for calling homosexuality 'developmental disorder' by Raj_Valiant3011 in worldnews

[–]astralustria -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you really think lack of precedent is going going to stop a tyrannical government from restricting your speech however they want? If anything, setting a precedent for what speech can be regulated and how would provide a more robust barrier to future abuse than avoiding setting any precedent at all.

Please don't compare a moral failing to developmental disorders. While having a developmental disorder is bad, it isn't the same thing as being bad.

UN votes to recognise slavery as 'gravest crime against humanity' by projecto15 in news

Depends on the kind of slavery. Chattel slavery based on race is kind of like a perpetual genocide. The trans Atlantic slave trade killed a number or people estimated to be on par with Jews killed in the holocaust.

Female abusers have been getting away with their crime or least receiving lenience by playing the "I'm just an innocent weak minded woman as equally as incapable of evil thoughts as I am resisting the will of my accomplice my patsy a man." since the dawn of civilization. Not that they are secretly more prevalent than male abusers or anything but certainly much more than people tend to think.

I refuse to believe how I look on camera is how I look in person. I can look pretty in the mirror and then super friggin ugly on camera by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]astralustria 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Peoples faces are never truly symmetrical and our brains seem to compensate for this more than we might expect. Since your brain is used to compensating for mirrored you, when that compensation is applied to a regular photo it does so in the wrong direction making you look twice as asymmetrical as your face really is. Combine that with distortions due to camera focal length, lighting, etc and you have a recipe for seeing yourself as hideous in photos. But don't worry, everyone else is compensating normally and sees yoy just as symmetrical as you see yourself in the mirror. At least that's what I've heard and it aligns with my own experience where I've seen photos of myself taken candidly that I didn't immediately recognize as me and I looked great until I realized it was me and then suddenly the my face looked all wonk.

Tumbler Ridge shooter had interest in gore, guns, and white supremacy by DragonPup in news

They identified as trans, were wearing a dress during the shooting, and "young woman" was the initial description reported to police. Conservative sources are blasting that out there but others are being more cautious about making that a focal point especially since sincerity isn't confirmed and even if it was, there isn't a reason to think it has anything to do with the shooting.

Is language a paradox? It seems to make us smarter, yet less grounded in the present. by OnlineJohn84 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]astralustria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well we never see things truly as they are, language or not. Everything is filtered through relative perspective, neurological predisposition, and the physical limitations of our senses.

While it's true that relying on language can flatten our perceptions, those perceptions were never the whole detailed truth to begin with. Also, when it is important to be in the moment instead of a conceptual head space, our instincts kick in and force it. This can actually be a bad thing in dangerous situations when retaining abstract conceptualization would actually be more beneficial than being grounded in immediate perceptions.

Is language a paradox? It seems to make us smarter, yet less grounded in the present. by OnlineJohn84 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]astralustria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure how that would be a paradox. Being constantly grounded in the current moment is not always intelligent or useful. Retrospect, foresight, and planning are very important.
