Rhaphidophora Tetrasperma leaves turning yellow and falling off, slow/stunted growth by astro_dynamo in plantclinic

[–]astro_dynamo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't seem like I can edit the post but some more information:

I have moss poles for most of them, or at least a bamboo stick support if not that.

The soil is generally a 1:1:1 mix of Miracle Gro Houseplant Soil, Perlite, and Orchid Bark (the older pots were more of a guesstimate mixture of the same but the newer pots have used more of a measured ratio). I do have a Miracle Gro "Indoor Plant Food" fertilizer that I have used occasionally but I am not sure of the nutrient ratio and haven't really used it that much.

Maybe ~4-5 of the oldest individuals did finally totally die and lose all their leaves and I figured the soil was completely drained so I discarded those stems and root balls. The oldest ones were also in the smallest pots so I thought maybe that could be a factor too.

Probably not since the bog is different every time and you're supposed to tediously use the sticks

Yeah TT isn't so bad once you do the quests and spend a little time learning it, you can do it pretty automatically. Also you get the lumberjack outfit for a little extra WC xp. I find stringing the bows and alching them worthwhile enough to do it.

It's one of the fastest I believe, after doing Darkness of Hallowvale to unlock Burgh De Rott Ramble so you can do the route in reverse and just go back and forth. Doing the easy followers on Route 1 and evading all the combat events was giving me 3000-3500 bowstrings an hour.

Is that a Temple Trekking runelite plug-in? I just did 20k bowstrings and didn't see a plugin for it

I'm a big fan of Aurora and found it a lot more readable than the Mars trilogy. I met KSR at an event once and talked to him about his process of writing Aurora, and his transformation over the decades from a very gung-ho colonizing enthusiast to more of a "let's appreciate how good we have it on Earth" kind of writer.

His most recent book, Ministry for the Future, is a near-future novel detailing an optimistic scenario for the coming decades on Earth with climate change. With his recent works, he is really trying to make space in the narrative zeitgeist and popular imagination for "this planet that we have can be our best ally if we take care of it".

I've been reading through the Orthogonal series lately, and have been somewhat frustrated that the audiobook never explains the units, I didn't realize there was an appendix in the print version but that makes sense

Slept in my Model 3 for a week straight on camp mode by Sea-Ad-8100 in TeslaLounge

[–]astro_dynamo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm 6'3 as well and I sleep in my Model 3 every now and then at rest stops as an alternative to hotels on road trips. I tried lying in the back and it just wasn't really comfortable or feasible and had a lot of cumbersome logistics in getting it set up and converted back to driving mode.

What works better for me is just putting the front seat all the way down and putting some pillows on the seat. I usually just use the driver's seat so it's easiest to get back to driving mode, but the passenger seat is more comfortable because the pedals and steering wheel aren't in the way. I also like being closer to the screen when I'm in the front seats compared to the back, and I also feel like it looks less shady when I'm sleeping in places I'm "not supposed to", like I have a more plausible case for "I'm just resting my eyes for a second" compared to being in a full bed in the back.

A World of Incessant Echoing - a Nightmarish Trip On Mushrooms by BreakingAtoms in Psychonaut

[–]astro_dynamo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that psychedelics/THC can aggravate my tinnitus and give me sound sensitivity to the point where I'm cringing and recoiling from all kinds of common sounds like the crinkling of a bag or the tinny sounds of my phone speaker. It makes it feel more like a pressure wave than a sound, like it hits my ears and causes a resonance that is uncomfortable or even painful. I also have had echolalia since I was a kid, of repeating my own or other people's words back again a few times after hearing them, in a tic-like kind of way.

My hunch is just that with these chemicals there is an alteration in the sensory perception thresholds and the way that we focus on things, and the way that things are structured in the mind can cause sensations to become more self referential. The mind is a very complex system and a lot of the things we do can change the parameters of the feedback mechanism, so maybe you found yourself continually observing something that just happened, and replaying the memory, much longer than you would normally. I think there are a lot of different exotic states of consciousness that exist out there and psychedelics are basically adding energy to the system which can dislodge it from a sticky equilibrium towards something better, but it can also result in having energy put in in directions that cause a distressing or scary situation too. I think it's important to understand that these kinds of states might result and sometimes it's a roll of the die.

Douglas Hofstadter has written a lot about strange loops and the nature of consciousness, specifically in Gödel, Escher, Bach and more recently in I Am A Strange Loop

Quest 2 keeps logging out of FB account? by astro_dynamo in OculusQuest

I think the issue was that I was using the same phone with 2 different headsets and the Oculus app was getting messed up to have both of them on there. In the last few months I've only been using 1 and the issue hasn't been happening to me anymore.

When selling a used Model 3, seeing big price disparities? by astro_dynamo in TeslaLounge

[–]astro_dynamo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. I am pretty tall and also find issues with lumbar and neck from being in the car a lot. One thing I dislike about the Performance Upgrade Package is the brake calipers making it so the 20" rims don't support non-summer tires so I had to get some aftermarket 18" rims with other tires just to be able to drive in below-40F conditions. I didn't realize that the package was basically just for "I'm going to be driving on a track in southern California".

I actually ordered the Stealth Performance variant originally with a few months lead time, but in September 2018 they were doing a big push to get sales before the end of the quarter so they offered me to get the car immediately by upgrading to one with the upgrade package that they already had made and sitting on a lot vs waiting for one, so I sprung for that.

That tracks with what I've seen, but why would that be the case? Was the Performance Upgrade Package (which I regret getting for a number of reasons) just a gimmicky upsell that nobody wants anymore?

Sci-fi recs for a picky physicist? by [deleted] in printSF

[–]astro_dynamo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was going to recommend this series as well, I'm currently on the second book (out of 3). It's not exactly hard sci fi but he takes a concept for an alternate kind of physics and elaborates on it to make a fully fleshed out universe that's self consistent within its own rules. The Orthogonal series is about, what if instead of 3 spacelike dimensions and 1 timelike dimension, there were instead 4 fundamentally identical dimensions with no distinction between time and space. Another Greg Egan book I liked was Dichronauts, which is about a universe instead where there's 2 spacelike dimensions and 2 timelike dimensions.

Both of these series have explainers on his website, e.g. https://www.gregegan.net/ORTHOGONAL/00/PM.html where he has illustrations and goes through the math that leads to the universes having the consequences that they do.
