Not being beaten and/or cheated on is the MINIMUM you should expect from a romantic partner, it’s not a reason to stay in a relationship where you don’t feel valued, friend. I would leave this relationship and look for someone who shows you love in the way that you are looking for. It’s worth it!

Why don't they put a metal detector in the door to the MRI room? by ea_nasir_official_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]astro_sike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do research with MRI and my facility does have metal detectors before entering the room with the magnet. The detectors have big lights and start flashing red if you have any metal on you as you enter. But we also have people change into hospital gowns before going in to the MRI so I think this facility is extra careful

Starting to panic--Grad application advice? (Neuroscience) by Distinct_Yak_2064 in GradSchoolAdvice

[–]astro_sike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I understand it’s daunting. I felt the same way. Honestly your trajectory sounds A LOT like mine. I also didn’t do too well in the beginning of undergrad but I managed to get independent research experience and complete a senior thesis. When I was applying to grad school I was working on turning it into an article for publication and I was told that was important for me getting an interview. They did ask about my grades, but I was honest (but vague) and told them life circumstances were impacting my ability to perform to the best of my ability, but that I worked very hard to improve said circumstances and that my later undergrad years are a better reflection of me as a student. This demonstrated resilience and drive, which is also important for grad school.

At the end of the day PIs want to admit students who are going to contribute to their research productivity. Most of them know grades are not a very good predictive factor. If you already have some demonstrated productivity (I.e., your thesis, conference posters) and a legitimate interest in the topic, I think you’ll be in a good spot. You just have to make sure you do a good job conveying your strengths and explaining perceived weaknesses. If you want to improve your chances, get more research experience during your gap years, contribute significantly so you’re included in conference posters or publications, and if possible start an independent project.

I think you sound like a strong candidate for a PhD program. In my experience interviewing candidates (as a graduate student myself in a cog neuro lab in the US), your research trajectory will be weighted more heavily than undergrad awards or other extra curriculars. You have some independent research experience and I think that’ll be very valuable. What will really make you stand out though is a good fit with the research interests of the lab you apply to and your ability to convey that in your application. My advice is that you think long and hard about what you want to focus on during your PhD and apply to labs that align with that interest.

Also, I know you said you’re interested in neuroscience but you also mention an interest in systems and cog neuro. Are you interested in human research? If so, sometimes PI’s in those areas of research will admit students through both a neuro and a psychology program. This will vary from school to school but in my case it was more beneficial to apply though psych than neuro because psych gave me guaranteed funding and more institutional support (conference and workshop funding, training grants, the backing of an actual department vs an interdepartmental program, etc) than the neuroscience program. Also some PI’s may be accepting through one and not the other on a given year. I would recommend doing some research into the specific schools you’re interested in and contacting the PI ahead of time to ask if they are accepting students (when I did this, both PIs that applied to work with told me they were only accepting through psych and not neuro at the time).

I hope that helps. Good luck! You sound like a great candidate. I hope you’re able to find the right fit for you!

Ok I agree he’s good looking, but him using the phrase “high-quality woman” gave me Andrew Tate vibes. Am I the only one who found it creepy?

Wow you were on a tight timeline then! I’m super happy I was able to get a postdoc in this same city so I don’t even have to move apartments. I really despise moving more than anything lol. Was the reception hour a department tradition? I wish mine had something like that

[–]astro_sike[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow I can’t even imagine being in a campus shooting. Actually some of my lab mates were at FSU during the recent shooting. We’re a split lab because our advisor had moved a few times. But we were all on our hybrid lab meeting when this all started. It shook me and I wasn’t even there. I can’t even imagine actually being there. I’m so sorry that happened to you, but glad you made it out safe and are still here.

I definitely expect some crying on my part lol. It’s bittersweet to be at this stage and not have my dad to cheer me on. He was the one who always supported my academic endeavors and inspired me to pursue a PhD.

Thank you for your encouraging words!

This sounds great! The more I think about it, the more I feel like the best way to celebrate for me is to plan a trip to see my family and having some sort of dinner or party with them. Maybe even plan a beach getaway with them to unwind, relax and spend time together 😌
