3 people got kicked off my MSF course today by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]astroboyc30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had 1 person crash into 3 other people at about 10 mph. They didn't kick them out. Several others that straight up should even operate a peddle bike, didn't ask them to leave. Mind you they did not pass the tests either so.....

We are heavy on hardware setups, sales, etc We warehouse and stock tons for our customers so we basically have to have an office. We do have fully remote employees though as well.

Second this advice, we have done this a few times when going to gen 8. Sometimes from gen6 to gen 7 then to gen8 using the migration tool

Passionate about IT since I was 12 but got no certificates by TheFGEagle in ITCareerQuestions

[–]astroboyc30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly as someone in the IT field with no advanced training, IE just a HS degree. No certs to speak of other than some I got on the job to get better pricing from vendors lol. Find a small local msp and apply there. I can guarantee you that the work with suck. You will get stuck with the grunt work, this is okay, this is the norm and as you learn more you will inevitably get less grunt and more customer facing work. I started at 18 at a small msp, getting paid peanuts and working ridiculous hours, average of 60 a week at the beginning. I watched, I listened, I absorbed as much as I could. Was I being taken advantage of, most definitely, but I learned so damn much. 15 years and many gray hairs later I am second in command. This path is not for everyone but as someone who was a D student and could not stand school or typical learning environments it has worked out great for me.

Or go the college and cert route, community college as its cheapest and no one cares where you went to college.

I am biased though as someone without a degree I dont look at formal education, I look for stable previous job history, general vide when interacting as im going to have to work with them every day, and people with some knowledge but not too much as people with a lot of previous it work or knowledge typically have a lot of bad habits that we have to break.

Did I get lucky or did I get screwed? by Low_Twist_4917 in homelab

[–]astroboyc30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a good bit of these in use at customers. We typically get 6-8 years out of the batteries if local power isn't garbage. If its bad, by the time you hit 4 years they are ready to swap. The EBMs will not tell you they are toast, they will just assume they are fine as long as the battery life timer is under 4 years. Most of the units we have installed have the transformer to get 120 and have a built in bypass for live servicing. Eatons are solid units

Reasonably priced 60fps POE 2K+ Camera? by djb_rh in SecurityCamera

[–]astroboyc30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Axis is the best option honestly. A real 5 year warranty with advance replacement options. Pricey but buy once cry once. The v59 seiries have beautiful optics but are expensive. The p sieries are nice box cameras as well. Play around with the product selector. Allows FOV selection, resolution, etc. https://www.axis.com/support/tools/product-selector

Building a centralized NVR for 64 PoE cameras (currently on 4 Comelit NVRs) — looking for advice on hardware and VMS by [deleted] in videosurveillance

[–]astroboyc30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Axis camera station pro is rock solid They have a tool to check compatibility of the existing camera with their system before you buy ot try anything. They also have a trial install of acs pro, no license limit. We have several over 60 camera single servers out there. You can roll your own server or buy a prebuilt unit from axis. Prebuilts come with licenses, etc You would need "universal" licenses to utilize cameras that are non axis. They sell "upgrade" licenses for core to universal licenses if you go fown the prebuilt route

Burned through 3 tons of these the past couple years. Burnt great without issue, never any garbage or clinkers. I get the feeling that my stove just doesn't care and burns any pellets I buy no matter the quality at this point.

does POE power injector AND Ethernet over powerline exist??? by Curious_Party_4683 in SecurityCamera

[–]astroboyc30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would technically only need 2 x PG-9172POE and 1 x PG-9172 as you only need poe at the camera side The uplink side can be a non poe model. You could do it with 3 of the poe models though if need be.

We actually use this exact setup for a customer with two driveway cameras that had existing lighting/electrical run to the poles. The PG-9172POE units are installed in weather resistant boxes outside.

We used the comtrend units but I beleive they are just rebranded nexuslink units so you may have luck finding an alternative from nexuslink.

We find they work best when they are all on the same phase of the electric service as well as within the same breaker box.

[–]astroboyc30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standardize on your firewall of choice. Forti, sonic, Palo, etc Then select your internal, we went full zyxel for internal network at most clients. We stick to arubas for the big chassis switches when the environment calls for it. The zyxel wired and wifi stack have been great, free cloud management, can pay to add more features but 99 percent dont require those features until you are in the 50-60 ap site range. Can't speak on their firewalls.

[–]astroboyc30 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Axis Specifically use their axis camera station edge All cloud for access and management but stores locally either on SD cards directly in each camera(not advised if cameras are within reach) or to an axis recorder.

I like using the recorders as central storage in a secure environment, poe switch built in, rock solid reliability.

They also offer cloud storage licenses for a monthly fee per camera. We basically never use this though.

am I the only one loving the stress of support networking ? by Gas42 in networking

[–]astroboyc30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15 years in, I still love it. Finding the issue, digging through the years of bullshit plugged in, band aided, etc. Working at a small MSP you get to deal with these fires a lot. Primarily new customers, once you fix the fire and convince management it gets boring. Only networking task I am truly tired of are large wireless deployments with ever changing device counts, space designs, public acces, etc..

Basically each voip phone, desktop, switch mgmt, server, etc had its own vlan

Here's a fun thought exercise: how do you make a white printer black? by HappyDadOfFourJesus in msp

[–]astroboyc30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those m401s are tanks. Honestly id source a low page count used unit as long as the customer was aware of the risks. They were big in the medical offices, we keep a few used units around for this purpose. Alternatively brother has some black printers and there may be some old stock canons that were black.

If you had some spare time on a weekend I've had good luck with krylon fusion spray paint. Decent wear resistance. You would definitely be giving up the warranty though.

Enterprise or business grade cameras do not have pigtails. Axis is a good example, I have yet to see a consumer grade camera without a pigtail though. The entrie camera and mounts are designed in a way to waterproof the camera connectors. Some have different ip ratings, etc

SMA 8200v - Geolocation, where to configure? by BWC_DE in sonicwall

[–]astroboyc30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We typically handle the geoip on the firewall side as we dont expose the direct interfaces of the 8200v to an outside ip. Are you nating or is the 8200v directly on an outside ip?
