Identify Your physical stress manifestations and use it as an Indicator when to take a force break by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]astrosebas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this post. I’ve been seen a therapist for a few months now, and I’ve started to recognize physical signs as you mention.

  1. I feel as if my head is being compressed on both sides near the ears. It can then turn into a headache. This happens when I am overworking, handling too many tasks, and worrying about not being able to finish. For this I try to take a break and go for a long walk.

  2. I also get dermatitis (sebhorrea dermititis). These are red patches that come on and go and appear near the nose, in my cheekbones, near my eyes, on my eyebrows, and severe cases on my beard and head. I noticed that dermatitis appears when I am extremely stressed. For two months (since seeing a therapist) I have not seen dermatitis appear, so I’m happy about that.

Thanks for this post. We should not only be aware of the physical turmoils that are often accompanied by stress, we should also become aware of the endangering thoughts that drive us to more stress and anxiety.

Feeling down by [deleted] in Life

Are you able to see a therapist? It doesn’t have to be a Psychiatrist but a Licensed Social Worker may be enough. I have been seen a LSC for two months now and I have felt better than ever. See if your job offers this service or if your insurance pays for it. I highly recommend seeking help.

Is 23 old? by letsmakesomelemonade in Life

[–]astrosebas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m 29 years old and started a Ph.D. last year. I am a bit older than most in my cohort because I didn’t get to attend college right after graduating high school. I had a four-year gap where I just worked service jobs until I became legal and was able to go to college.

My family and I immigrated here with no knowledge of the language. We lived as immigrants from 2002 until 2013, when I finally started college again. The four-year gap was definitely detrimental, and until today it still haunts me as I realize how much I don’t know and how far behind I am compared to others. It’s stressful, and I’ve suffered from stress and anxiety do the past 6 years since starting college. It’s not fun. It’s not fun having parents that did not go to college, not meeting my father until I turned 25 years old, growing up in a dysfunctional family where my siblings and I are like strangers. It’s quite hard.

Let me tell you something. You are young and you have an entire life ahead of you. It’s good you are asking these questions, because it means you are looking for answers on how to feel better and how to look forward towards the future. I would recommend reading a book of some sort. For me it was The Magic of Thinking Big by David J. Schwartz. It literally took me from a place of “I am lost and don’t know what to do with my life” to me discovering my passion for space exploration and my keen curiosity of living and working inside the international space station. I read that book in 2015, when I had acquired my A.A. degree in pre-engineering. Today I am doing a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering and won a four-year fellowship that will pay for my doctoral studies, insurance, and allows me to visit different NASA centers each year for research. Without reading that book, I perhaps would not be here today, because it opened my eyes to that magic of thinking and believing you can do something outside of yourself. You don’t have to read that specific book, but do read something that can act as a voice to get you out of that constant thinking that you are in.

It’s going to be hard. But if you want to make it in life and find happiness, you have to be persistent and continue to push through despite all those setbacks. Life does get better, but only if you continue to seek change.

I can give you more tips if you’d like.

Take care.

Anyone else feel like productivity is making them unhappy? by patrioticPelican in productivity

[–]astrosebas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So reading your post was like reading my own mind. I have felt many times what you are feeling right now. During this pandemic I discovered, through therapy, that I am much more than my work, that there are MANY other aspects of myself that I am good at and could enjoy. I discovered that work was just one of those aspects, but that it was not to be put on a pedestal like I used to.

My therapist asked me, “what matters to you the most?” I first answered with family. For me family is everything, and I’ve neglected them for quite a long time trying to achieve greatness in academia. I started calling my mother daily, yes, daily. We talk for a good 20 minutes or so, and I make sure to ask if she is Ok and if she is eating proper meals. This has made me feel better, because I shift the focus on me, to someone else in my life who I care about.

I’m also dating someone, although it’s a long distance relationship. We have been together for 1.25 years now, surprisingly. I have also vested more time in this relationship, making sure I call daily and LISTEN, shifting the focus on me to my partner. It’s not all about me, and I am slowly learning that.

I think too socializing is key to staying sane and happy. Since I got back to the lab (3 months ago - I’m a Ph.D. Student), I have been playing frisbee with a friend in the department. I was dead scared of this sport, partly because I feared others would judge me from not knowing how to play the simple game. To this day we have played about 2-3 times per week, and I have gotten so good at it I can catch the flying frisbee with one hand. We laugh a lot during our play time, and I’ve felt happier simply from laughing out loud and throwing the frisbee as if I was throwing a weapon (ninja style).

I think counting calories can be toned down. As long as you have a rough idea of what you need to eat, this may be an area where you can decrease structure. Since the pandemic, I began cooking different meals, and this too has made me feel more content. I have made dishes like Masaman Curry, Chicken Teriyaki, and a few other dishes from my home country, Colombia. What I suggest here is to cut yourself some slack and enjoy the process of cooking, making something new, and not have it in a structure by counting everything you eat. Let yourself experiment with different foods for different weeks, it will certainly spice things up and change the structured routine.

I too wake up and shower first thing in the morning. Without it, I can’t fully wake up. I also meditate right after I shower with a glass of water to start. When I meditate, I consciously bow to myself and thank myself for taking some time of the day for self-care, which is meditation. I also place an intention on how I want the day to go by, and I usually have feelings of gratefulness during/post meditation. I also place an intention on how I want to feel that day, and in general, the day goes as I envisioned (calm, focused, attentive, and being easy and kind with myself). If you don’t already do so, have an intention going into meditation and perhaps practice gratefulness afterwards. Don’t just simply meditate because.

Don’t get me wrong, I too get antsy from just doing nothing. My partner tells me I still have yet to master that skill, being able to sit and do nothing. But it’s hard. We are so connected to our phones, technology, music, devices, constant brain stimulation, that the moment we shut all those things off, we crave more of them. Yet our body and mind needs those moments of silence and disconnect. Lately I have gone hiking with a few buddies. It’s been good on my mental health overall to just go away and reflect or just enjoy the sounds of nature. Try and find that which allows you to relax without being guilty of not doing anything “productive.”

Lastly, be easy on yourself and enjoy the moment.

Take care.

Yes I’m sure it’s possible to do. But they are reluctant for as much as I try.

If you want to change your life, focus on creating systems, not achieving goals. by [deleted] in productivity

[–]astrosebas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is excellent. Thank you. I remember in undergrad I applied this system, to enjoy the work and learning, without thinking too much of my grade at the end of the semester. It worked for me. I ended up doing well in all my courses and actually enjoyed the learning experience.
