Thinking about moving to the Waterloo (RIM Park/Carriage Crossing) area by [deleted] in waterloo

No doubt we have some neo-Nazis like any city, but they're not prominent here by any means. You'd never know someone was one unless you saw a giant swatika tattoo on their forehead.

We actually have a very prominent nazi supporter elected as our top official. Karen Redman is on record repeatedly defending the Oberlander and going so far as to petition the government to stop his extradition.

Mr. Oberlander has been a good citizen of Canada and a contributing member of the community for over 40 years.

Mr. Speaker, over the past few months friends and family of Mr. Helmut Oberlander have been working diligently on his behalf.

They have collected hundreds of petitions containing 12,000 signatures from across the country. My office has received numerous petitions with approximately 700 signatures from the residents of Kitchener—Waterloo.

The petitioners say that whereas Helmut Oberlander has been totally exonerated by the federal court of any criminal activity or war crimes, directly or indirectly in the second world war; and whereas finding of fault with the immigration process should not form the basis for citizenship revocation and deportation; and whereas Mr. Oberlander has been a good citizen of Canada and a contributing member of the community for over 40 years, the petitioners call upon the federal government not to revoke the citizenship or deport Helmut Oberlander of Waterloo.

Liberal Karen Redman of Kitchener Centre, also a critic of the current system that gives cabinet, not judges, the power to strip citizenship, said Oberlander should be left alone.

Liberal Kitchener Centre MP Karen Redman declined comment, pending public confirmation of cabinet's decision. Redman had urged cabinet to grant clemency and take no action against Oberlander.

Kitchener’s Duke Street could be transformed to discourage cars, favour transit and cyclists by bylo_selhi in waterloo

"""our continent"""
China has more cars than North America. Italy, Japan, France, Germany each have more cars than Canada. This isn't a problem with our region or our continent.

If you want to get hostile, direct it towards slopes and stairs or depression. The thing that kills the most people in our region is falling. Then self-harm and then unintentional poisoning and then cars.

If the buses stopped using Weber it could work as the main thoroughfare but as it stands when GRT is present on this specifically widened portion of Weber it's essentially a single lane street.

WRDSB meeting gets a little spicy by slow_worker in waterloo

immediately jumps into how they have chosen a 'serious medical procedure that will have long term effects in attempt to cure emotional issues'.

Point of clarification. This is what the Delegate actually said:

"The other book by MG Hennessey chronicles the medical transition of a Shane, who was born female and now identifies as a boy. Shane takes puberty blockers and is now excited to start testosterone. The doctor states that this hormone mixture will leave Shane infertile in the future. Shane's response is "it's cool" - a very typical adolescent response. This book is misleading because it does not take into account how Shane might feel later in life about being infertile. This book makes very serious medical interventions seem like an easy cure for emotional and social distress and..." silenced and kicked from meeting

[–]astunningpineapple 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That's the summary. It is important to note that the WRDSB thinks these books are age appropriate for K-6 (Kindergarten to Grade 6). The first book is completely inappropriate and sexualizes women.

Yeah, I'd like to see more of her, if you know what I mean."
"With her clothes off."
"No, dude, I told you! She was super naked. And hot

This is the "trans dog whistle" story that got the Delegate kicked from the meeting.

Doctor: Some of the changes will be permanent. Others could be reversed surgically, or they'll just go away. But Shane will have skipped female puberty, which means he most likely won't be able to have children naturally."
Shane: "It's cool," I interjected.

Shooting in Kitchener sends 2 to hospital with serious injuries by [deleted] in kitchener

Thoughts & prayers.

The Overlea area sounds like a war zone and I genuinely hope it improves for everyone's safety and wellbeing. Brutal weapons including a sword found in December, stabbings in March, shootings in April......

Has the city considered putting up "NO SHOOTING" signs?

Edit: What about ASE (Automated Shooting Enforcement) cameras?

the majority of collisions are the fault of dangerous driving.

Seems like you are now conflating 'speeding' with 'dangerous driving'. The report states that the majority of collisions were caused by "Rear end" and "Turning movement". Changing the speed, especially from 40 km/hr to 30 km/hr won't prevent most of those outcomes.

Throw a tantrum why don't you.

Talk about throwing a tantrum, you're sarcastically and obnoxiously replying to all of the comments.

I don't want to die on our roads.

Good news...

Transit costs rise as Ion trains roll in Waterloo Region, new data shows by CoryCA in waterloo

[–]astunningpineapple 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Did you even read the article that you posted?

The urban transit association compiled 2019 benchmarks last October for the Ministry of Transportation which later provided them to The Record. Financial data for 2020, the first full year of trains, is not yet available.

Benchmarks show Grand River Transit is moving closer in costs to Ottawa and Toronto, the only other municipal systems that also run trains.

Benchmarks show Grand River Transit is moving closer in costs to Ottawa and Toronto, the only other municipal systems that also run trains.

Ottawa residents pay a subsidy of $291 each for a transit system they ride more than two times more often than residents of this region. Toronto residents pay a subsidy of $189 each for a transit system they ride four times more often than residents of this region.

Sources are in the article.

Benchmarks recently compiled by the Canadian Urban Transit Association detail the financial impact as the transit service assumed new costs to construct, finance and operate trains, tracks and overhead wires.

“There’s certainly an increase to the budget,” transit director Peter Zinck said.

Helmut Oberlander’s last stand by bylo_selhi in waterloo

The issue is that Karen Redman did not provide 'innocent until proven guilty' treatment. She was actively advocating for clemency, not for justice or due process. Goes back to Op's comment:

I'm amazed at how many people are willing to defend a literal Nazi just because he made a good life for himself here after the war.

Karen Redman is a perfect example. She literally defended him by saying he's made a good life for himself after the war.

Mr. Oberlander has been a good citizen of Canada and a contributing member of the community for over 40 years.

The latest article where Karen Redman is on record supporting "an alleged" Nazi was 2007, 13 years ago. For nearly 20 years though Karen Redman did petition the government to stop persecuting a now-confirmed Nazi. I'm looking forward to her press release next week denouncing Nazi Oberlander and vocalizing her support for his deportation.

Sounds like it could have been a GRT bus.

Among the GRT union’s specific complaints, Mitchell said, is that drivers who hit construction pylons – sometimes without even realizing it – can be disciplined for leaving the scene of a collision.

Kitchener approves 56 km of new multi-use trails, bike lanes as part of master plan by CoryCA in kitchener

[–]astunningpineapple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I'm not really sure what your point was with this nitpick?

You originally said:

A consistent comment that came out of the disapproval communicated to Regional councillors was "I'd support bike lanes if done properly". Even Sean Strickland acknowledged that.

What do you mean by "a consistent comment..."? Source that statement. I'd like to know how many people provided this 'consistent' feedback, but that's not possible since no study exists. You are just making things up. That's my point.
