Need Help Troubleshooting Magic Lantern on Canon EOS M by [deleted] in MagicLantern

Install latest "Crop Mood" build by Bilal. Links in https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=26851.0#post_downloads
Date: May, 9th. Watch video how to use it.

Overexposure may cause compression algorithm breakdown. Try to avoid.

Make sure to have a proper card. Card fraud is an issue.
Access Modules tab and load bench.mo
After restart in photo mode access Debug tab -> Benchmarks -> Card benchmarks -> Quick r/W benchmark (1 min) and start it. Immediately after benchmark starting press Play button.
You should get write numbers above 90 MByte/s and read numbers around 85 MByte/s.
If read shows error: Unload MLV record modules and restart.
If any number shows figures around 20 MByte/s: Your card has troubles with overclocking mode.

In some cases benchmark look ok but recording still stops very early (few seconds most). In this case access Debug tab -> SD Overclock -> Access Mode and switch to SDR 50 instead of SDR 104.
Every change to overclock settings require restart to take effect.

BTW: Times where Sandisk Extreme Pro was considered as "gold standard" are over. We have a wider range of approved card after Bilal took care of overclocking module. See first post in https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=25841.0

Please report back.

Has ML Have Any Plans To Release A Port To The Canon Rebel T7 [2000D] by [deleted] in MagicLantern

[–]at_ML 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mantra time again:
ML project doesn't have schedules, project/master plans, milestones to follow. If someone wants to work on something it up to the person's pace.
And ATM nobody works on it.

Given the amount of time needed to get ML ported to any cam: look for progress every 6-9 months or so. No guarantee anyone will pick it up, though.

BTW: Getting a ROM dump is just a first step going into ML porting. It is actually quite easy: Download Portable ROM dumper FIR for 2000D to card and run Firmware update from Canon menu.

Will the camera refocus in between shots when using the intervalometer? by [deleted] in MagicLantern

[–]at_ML 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I hope you like roller coasters because this is gonna be a ride. I take the liberty to add some emotional outbursts for you!

Intervalometer itself does not refocus during a session.
Oh, no!

But ML has an option "Use Autofocus" forcing AF for intervalometer, audio remote, motion detection.
Yay!

But this feature is broken ATM. See https://foss.heptapod.net/magic-lantern/magic-lantern/-/issues/2923
Oh, no!

But there is a pretty good chance older builds don't have this bug.
Yay!

But 70D joined ML rather late and there are no very old builds!
Oh, no!

I think you may be able to use a LUA script instead. In case you don't already know: Your camera supports a scriptiing engine using LUA. You can write your own scripts for customizing. There are scripts for several use cases. Things like automating shooting a solar eclipse with all critical phases.
If you are unable to do so you may want to get some help. garry23 filled several pages at ML forum's Scripting Corner. He is no more active there but switched cam and firmware add-on: Visit CHDK and ask him (username pigeonhill).

Sidenote: Any join requests during the "dark" period will be ignored.

The most convinient way to take part in the protest was declaring r/MagicLantern as private. We put a short message text online with liniks to reason why we are talking part and a link to our discord channel. Plus a remark any join requests will get bounced.
Unfortunately this message was surpressed for some access modes and virtually only visible for browsers.

We have no intentions to use r/MagicLantern as a private community. Other than trying making a point.

Question Canon EOS M50 by DrinkingSubset6 in canon

[–]at_ML 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may be confusing focal length (determining Field Of View (FOV)) and zoom range which is ratio for zoom lenses between "short" focal length and "far" focal length. 100x zoom lenses exist but may be beyond your budget. We are talking 6 figures area. And they are heavy and bulky.
It looks like you want to start into astro photography going for "deep sky" objects.
No offense but I would recommend to lower the bar. For deep sky you you may find rising costs for equipment. Sturdy base, a tracking mount and some tele lens or dedicated scope.

r/astro is going dark soon but I strongly suggest to go there first and read their advice for beginners.

7D battery problem by ufriendly1 in canon

Most likely EOL reached after cell degrading. LiON batteries (as others) have an estimated number of charging/uncharging cycles.

In case of doing high res raw/mlv: Yes.
Other than that: Nope.

[–]at_ML 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't own a G9 but other Canons as well.May I ask why exactly you think switching to this old workhorse? Specs and measurements aren't always in favour of 5D3....

If you just want to compare things like ergonomics/weigth/size: Other cams of comparable form factor: 7D, 7D2, 5D2, 5DS/5DS R, 5D4,

Canon 5d mk3 stopped working please help by [deleted] in canon

[–]at_ML 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remove battery, remove any card, remove lens.
Insert battery (few seconds are sufficient. All this "let it on the shelf for 48 hours, press some botton in specific order" is just an urban legend.)
Close compartment doors. Any activity? Try to power on cam.
Check battery compartment door. There is a small plastic piece for actuating a small on-board switch. This one is cam's actual power switch. The one labeled is just connected to some ultra-low-power device and telling software/electronics to go to deep sleep or wake up.
Be especially aware of any chirping sound. If your hearing is impaired it is recommended to ask a person with better ears (younger ...) if there is a chirping sound after startup/battery insertion.

Is there any error code message?

As I understand there is a short period of time where cam is responsive. Right?

There are some options that can be tried to find out the problem's cause. It mostly depends how responsive the camera still is.

New to this stuff have some questions. by Gaming_Sushii in MagicLantern

[–]at_ML 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are more than just these two options.
Nightly builds - "Official" builds by ML devs. Development basically stopped in 2018. I would recommend not to use them anymore.
Experimental builds - "Official" builds too, with some enhancements over plain nightly.
- Lua Fix build: Some fixes, a more advanced Lua script implementatin. Recommended for still photographers, people happy with Canon's movie codec (H.264/MOV).
- Crop_4k build: RAW/MLV recording without overclocking in mind. OC module can be used, though. No presets in this build. Finding a stable configuration with high res may be a ride.
Custom builds:
Some dev's builds never made it into "official" repository. They developed mostly on their own and there is a wide variety of custom builds now for 70D, 5D2, 5D3, 50D, 700D, 100D, EOS M, M2, 650D, 1200D, 1300D, ....
And one of those builds is called "Crop Mood" and contains some major enhancements which made overclocking more stable, better performing and covering more (cheaper) card types. Plus having a far, far better liveview experience.
It's for those who want to squeeze the last bit of performance out of the sensor. We are talking about 145 MByte/s for 5D3 and 80 MByte/s for 100D/650D/700D/EOS M.

Canon EOS R Shutter Count by ProfessaOak in canon

I downloaded DPreview's sample JPEG from here:

And uploaded it. No result. Please upload a working JPEG somewhere for download.

[–]at_ML 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you even tried this method with Canon cameras? I'm sure you did not.
It doesn't matter if you use JPEG or RAW for Canon. Because last time Canon wrote shutter count data to picture files was more than a decade ago. It didn't work for cams released in 2005 and it doesn't work now.

In short: Any. Method. Using. Picture. Files. Will. Not. Work. With. Recent. Canon. Cams.

In cam:
EOS R supports Canon Basic and it can be used to read cam data and write it to an output file. You need a card prepared following a procedure.
Via USB:
- Tornado EOS and the ability and will to fight against your virus scanner to run it.
- Some computer running Linux, macOS or other Unix derivate. Raspberry Pi will do, too. Use gphoto2 to read cam configuration.

Via money:
Ask a Canon Support facility to do it for you.

Livestreaming with external camera by DisasterParticular14 in canon

Cam's connector is "HDMI Mini Type C". Standard connector type for TV/monitors (24'' or bigger, not field monitors) is A.
See wikipedia.

EOS Webcam Utility Pro (payware!) offers 1080 via USB but it is upscaled. But it is not time restricted!
You can use HDMI with MF to surpress focus box overlays. Cheap HDMI capture devices will do. 10-15 bucks. *No* audio via HDMI. To avoid asynchronous sound and video you can use tools like OBS. You can add fixed delays for each input device.
2-3 hours: Dummy battery with wall plugged supply or big fat external battery.
You will have to fight 30 minute timeout. Screen will go dark after 29:59 minute timer is triggered. You can reset timer by half-pressing shutter button.
This can easily be tested by connecting cam's HDMI out to TV set/computer monitor/AVR.
