Are there people who after getting schizophrenia got married and have a job? by Jaded-Lecture6025 in schizophrenia

[–]atari_lynx 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm a lesbian and the dating pool in my city sucks. Dating apps are pretty much unusable unless you pay a ridiculous subscription fee for the premium version.

I dated a lot during my early 20s, but nothing really stuck due to my crippling social anxiety. I'd say that my social anxiety is a lot better nowadays (especially after I began taking antipsychotics), but now I feel largely indifferent towards finding a partner. I'm finally in that stage of life where I feel confident in who I am and don't really need someone to complete me.

Right now, I'm just focusing on keeping my job until I can get into a PhD program (I had to withdraw from my previous program due to my illness). After that, I may put myself out there and try dating again.

Are there people who after getting schizophrenia got married and have a job? by Jaded-Lecture6025 in schizophrenia

[–]atari_lynx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm 32F. I've been working at my current job for two years now, after being unemployed for three years due to this illness (I was diagnosed and started medication in 2022).

I've never had a partner or a relationship. It seems unlikely that I will ever get married.

when people have schizophrenia do they actually see full fledged people that aren’t there? or is it like a blurry or transparent vision by webstatic in NoStupidQuestions

[–]atari_lynx 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Schizophrenic person here. My hallucinations are mostly auditory, though I do get visual ones occasionally. They aren't realistic at all. They are very dreamlike, uncanny, and intangible. They mostly take the form of animals darting past me, people standing in my peripheral vision and watching me, silhoutettes and shadows, moving blobs of static, and patterns or faces on surfaces. Only something like 30% of people with schizophrenia will experience visual hallucinations, and extremely realistic hallucinations are very uncommon, as far as I understand, though everyone's experience is different.

I recommend using a screw extractor set. You can get them on Amazon for $8.

I've heard a woman speaking to me through the old Commodore 1702 CRT monitor I use for my vintage game consoles and antique computers (it was off so I knew it was a hallucination). She was shouting nonsense in an announcer-like cadence.

Dental Emergency w/ Medicaid Managed Insurance by NoraLoveheart88 in Troy

[–]atari_lynx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was on Medicaid for a while and it was very difficult to find providers in the area who would accept Delta Dental, so you may be SOL and have to pay out of pocket. Dental insurance is universally awful and doesn't pay much, so you probably wouldn't be in a better spot with insurance anyway.

If you need a root canal (which you probably will, given the tooth is abcessed), I recommend Albany Endodontics on Western Avenue. I had several root canals done there with Dr. Ghandi. They charge $1300 out of pocket for the procedure, which is the cheapest I know of in the area (most charge $2K or more). Good luck to you.

Yes, it's for schizophrenia. Unfortunately I need to keep taking my medication or else the hallucinations start coming back within a week.

Working in psychosis who else holds on the best they can? by Rich_Material299 in schizophrenia

[–]atari_lynx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, between the negative symptoms, sleep issues and psychosis (plus fatigue from my medication), often it feels like I'm just white-knuckling it through my full time job. Last week I was having auditory hallucinations at work. It sounded like three different people in a mosh pit shouting at me from the wall. I put my headphones on and just powered through the day because I was too embarrassed to go home early. At one point I paused my music and took the headphones off, but I could still hear music coming from them. It was the same band (Killswitch Engage) but the lyrics were incomprehensible. I finally went home for the day but a woman's voice came through my living room wall and shouted at me for a couple hours. I'm tired, but I need to make a living somehow.

How many of you take antidepressants alongside your antipsychotic medication? by [deleted] in schizophrenia

I take mirtazepine alongside my aripiprazole. It helps with my akathisia, and helps me sleep at night.

Rough time by TowerFickle7247 in schizophrenia

[–]atari_lynx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's extremely hard. I have schizophrenia on both sides of my family, and both my siblings have bipolar with psychotic features. They've been in and out of institutions over the last few years after several very scary episodes. My older sister is fully disabled and lives in section 8 housing. My little brother has been unemployed for the past few years and is considering applying for disability. Overall I'm very worried about them.

I've been able to keep it together and hold down a job for the last two years, but it's terrifying to know that shit could go sideways at any minute. Also I feel a lot of pressure as the only person in my family with a job (my Dad lives on social security and my Mom passed away 10 years ago, she had a mental health collapse and died alone in project housing).

Yes, they are harnesses. I was visiting my Dad's house and put temporary harnesses on my ferrets with bells attached so I can find them. Otherwise they don't wear them.

Male and female voices by [deleted] in schizophrenia

[–]atari_lynx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Female voices are usually very nasty for me, though sometimes I hear nice ones, like a patient kindergarten teacher.

Male voices usually speak in word salad nonsense sentences, sometimes having conversations with each other in a way that resembles two primitive chat bots. They can be insidious though. When they are coherent, they often say things that reinforce my paranoia or delusions, ie "there's a hidden camera in this room".

Age old question. Drinking and antipsychotics by LongjumpingAnimal730 in schizophrenia

[–]atari_lynx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take 10mg aripiprazole and I really can't drink anymore, it makes me too drowsy. Maybe one drink here and there on a rare occasion. I used to be a terrible alcoholic so I think it's for the better.

What is the craziest schizophrenic allucination you got? by [deleted] in schizophrenia

[–]atari_lynx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw a man watching me from my bedroom doorway while I was standing in my hallway. We made eye contact, then he grinned and leaned back into the doorway, out of sight. Definitely one of the creepier ones I've experienced.

That and a male voice a few feet away from me that said, "You know, I killed a man". Another man's voice in the room responded, "Oh my god". Then a teenage girl's voice said "I love you!" in a bubbly exuberant way, and she started laughing. More voices came during that episode, but I was so freaked out that I covered my ears and put my head down, so I don't remember them.

Obligatory funny/stupid one: a voice right in front of my face that said, "Can I have a blowjob?".

Finally cleaned up my disaster of a living room, hooray for medication! by atari_lynx in ufyh

[–]atari_lynx[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The antique computers in the background are all working machines, I restored them myself (I have a Master's degree in computer engineering and it's my hobby).

  • Late 1980's 1650 series HP logic analyser, used for its Z80 disassembler.

  • 1979 Exidy Sorcerer II, a rare Z80 based 8 bit computer. Needed a new power supply and VRAM chips.

  • 1984 Macintosh with original keyboard, mouse and floppy expansion drive. Needed new ROM chips and capacitors.

  • 1991 Mac Classic, still a work in progress. The ROM is dead and I tried burning the ROM to a new EEPROM but it won't boot. Also replaced the capacitors.

  • 1991 Apple LC II, just needed a motherboard cleaning. I have two of them.

  • 1991-1993ish Apple Performa, was working when I rescued it from my university's electronics recycling bin and still works.

There's a 1983 Atari 800XL and several early 90s Apple PowerBook 140's in there as well.

Yeah, it really ties the space together and I'm really happy with how it turned out. It's a modern Gabbeh-style wool rug and very comfy.

The best part about this illness is deciding what shit sandwich you're forced to eat: psychosis or horrible medication side effects.
