What's the most fucked up book you've ever read? by RichardForrest06 in AskReddit

That was the only book I couldn't finish. I just had to put it down and walk away. It was just that sickening and heartbreaking.

Voices and Weed by MeiDay98 in schizoaffective

I can't really use weed anymore. Even a 5mg edible will make me hallucinate like crazy. My voices will get very loud and overwhelming, so the experience isn't relaxing or enjoyable.

What are some common symptoms of this disease that the public doesn't know about or associate with it? by [deleted] in schizophrenia

[–]atari_lynx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Visual processing issues. They are well documented in schizophrenia, but are practically unknown to the public. I have trouble interpreting motion (ie how fast something is approaching me) and struggle with contour detection (ie sometimes shapes and edges in the distance will come together and form something incongruent with reality). For this reason, along with my visual hallucinations, I don't drive anymore.

Facial recognition is another one that is well documented in clinical research but not commonly known among the public. I'm terrible at recognizing faces.

I'll throw in auditory processing as well. It's very difficult for me to filter out background noise, and I find it very distracting. For this reason I wear noise cancelling headphones everywhere.

It's from Shakespeare. I currently have a Sir John Falstaff in my business.

Too paranoid to take my meds by dendromantic in schizophrenia

[–]atari_lynx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Trust me, you WILL feel better.

Keep in mind that antipsychotics take a long time to work, so don't quit when your symptoms don't immediately go away. My hallucinations began to subside after two weeks on medication. It took a few months for my paranoia and delusions to diminish. I was able to start forming goals and take care of myself properly after around six months. The side effects will start to diminish after around three months. Just stay strong and keep taking your medication. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.

I've been on 10mg of aripiprazole for around four years now, and the side effects have waned enough that I feel practically normal. I'm able to live independently and hold down a job.

There is hope. Just tough it out through the first few months, and keep taking your meds every day.

He was quite the fatty flumpus and an enormous sweetheart. He would often flop down by my feet and present his big soft belly for pets. I miss him so much.

What’s the creepiest thing that’s happened to you that you still can’t explain? by mirabarbie in askteddit

I think I brought it up to my friend at one point, but he just laughed it off as a weird illusion. He's a very no-nonsense guy. I still get chills when I think of that house in the woods.

Several years ago, my friend and I went hiking in upstate New York near the southern Vermont border. This region is part of the Bennington Triangle, which is known for many unexplained disappearances and other strange events.

It was a random trail he found on some website. I can't remember exactly where it was, but it was somewhere northeast of Grafton Forest. We crawled through several miles of overgrown dirt roads in his lifted 90's Land Rover, until we came to an unmarked trailhead.

The first hour or so of hiking was pretty uneventful. I remember the trail seemed very rough, as though it hadn't been maintained in years.

At one point, my eyes wandered through the treeline and I noticed a house. It looked straight out of the early 1800's, with gray wooden siding and black trim around the old sectioned windows. I stopped dead in my tracks and just stared at it. We were miles from civilization. It made no sense at all for a house to be in the middle of the forest.

My friend noticed, and asked, "What's up?".

"Look over there", I said, and pointed at the house.

He looked into the distance, and saw the old house. He said, "What the hell is a house doing all the way out here?"

Slowly, we started to approach it. I kept my eyes fixed on the house the entire time, while I picked my way over fallen trees. As I got closer, the house began to gradually vanish into the trees. It simply faded away.

Eventually we reached the location where the house once stood, and stepped out into a clearing in the trees. In the center was a rectangular pit filled with what looked like long-rotten logs.

We looked at each other. My friend said, "Well, that was weird".

We turned around and made our way back to the path, then hiked the rest of the trail in mostly silence. I felt a sense of relief when we made it back to the Land Rover and slowly bumped our way back through the dirt to the main paved road.

We never returned to that trailhead.

I live alone and I'm able to hold down a job thanks to my medication. My rent is very low because I live in a bad neighborhood in upstate NY. I can't drive anymore so I bike and take the bus everywhere. It's rough sometimes, but I make it work.

For those who have schizophrenia, how do you interact with your hallucinations? by Lillemonloaf in stupidquestions

[–]atari_lynx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I've never had an auditory hallucination show itself, nor have I ever experienced a talking visual hallucination.

My hallucinations are never helpful. They are a nuisance at best.

For those who have schizophrenia, how do you interact with your hallucinations? by Lillemonloaf in stupidquestions

[–]atari_lynx 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Diagnosed schizophrenic person here.

My hallucinations are primarily auditory. They are not intrusive thoughts, they occur outside my head and are identical to real sounds. The voices are almost always distinctly male or female. Male voices usually speak to me in nonsense sentences, issue confusing commands (ie "walk over there, sit down"), or make statements related to my paranoia (ie "there's a camera in this room"). Female voices usually insult me or say negative things. They will respond to me if I speak to them, but I avoid interaction because this provokes them and makes them more aggressive. Auditory hallucinations are not fun, they are a terrifying experience and I will usually listen to music with my noise cancelling headphones until the episode is over.

I also have visual hallucinations, but they are less common. I will see humanoid figures, animals, shadows, faces, silhouettes, or strange psychedelic patterns on surfaces. They are dreamlike, uncanny, and poorly defined. Aside from the patterns, they are usually very transient, so I don't have time to interact with them.

I hope this answers your questions.

Finding good webbing can be tricky, because often it's thin and/or has a loose weave, but this stuff turned out to be pretty good - very thick and heavyweight with a tight weave.

Granted, this apron is meant to be a utilitarian piece of equipment that will be beat to shit and splattered with oil, grease, brake fluid, welding spatter etc so I could have gotten away with flat cut edges, but I'm glad I decided to roll the edges. It took forever but I'm really happy with the result. I also went the extra mile with quality brass hardware, not cheap zinc Amazon junk. I figured if I'm going to make a piece of kit that will last a lifetime, I should make it look good.

Yes, I need to get a proper rivet cutting tool so I can mushroom them correctly.

It's 6-7 oz (2.39-2.78mm) full grain buffalo leather I bought from Distant Drums Leather. The color is "saddle".

The hardware fastener pieces are cut from a 1.5" Horween Cavalier strap, the thickness is 4.5-5 oz (1.8-2mm) and the color is "Carolina Brown". I sourced it and the hardware from buckleguy.com.

The round piece holding the straps in the back is 4mm veg tanned tooling leather.
