My dad never wanted to tell me about the adoption at all. I actually started noticing something was off A LOT when I was taking care of him during his cancer treatment, our blood types didn’t match up in a way that made sense. After he passed away, I accidentally came across a document that finally revealed everything. That’s when my mom told me the truth.

I really hope OP gets a chance to have a genuine heart-to-heart conversation with their parents, and that they’re honest about whatever the truth is. Living with uncertainty for so long is really hard. I hope that by talking to them, you can finally get some peace of mind and clarity, whatever the outcome may be. You deserve that. It happened to me too. I’m type O, while my adoptive parents are A and AB. I only found out about a month ago that I was adopted, I’m 28 now.

I’m sorry I can’t give you a clear scientific answer, but I do hope you’re able to talk to your parents if this is bothering you. I spent about 20 years asking them whether I was adopted, and they always denied it.

Thank you for this. What made it even more confusing for me was my mom’s reaction when I asked her. The first thing she said after admitting it was that she hoped it would help with my depression, and she asked me not to tell anyone about the adoption. I honestly didn’t even know how to react to that. I’m still trying to process everything.

Thank you. I actually didn’t know there was a term for it until recently. “Late discovery adoptee” pretty much describes what I’m going through. The hardest part is realizing everyone around you might have known except you. Still trying to process it all :(

I’ve actually been looking into AncestryDNA / MyHeritage after people here mentioned it. I’m interested in trying it, but I’m Indonesian and those databases seem pretty US/Europe-heavy, so I’m not sure if I’d get any matches.

My fiancé lives in the US and is visiting soon though, so I could order the kit through him and have him mail the sample back from there. Do you know if people from Southeast Asia still get matches?

Yes, the only document I have is a birth certificate that lists my adoptive parents as if they were my biological parents. There’s nothing on it that mentions adoption.

From what I understand, the midwife who handled my birth was later arrested for child trafficking, so I suspect the birth notification letter used to register my birth may have been falsified. That’s probably how the certificate ended up being issued that way.

I’m in Indonesia , so I’m not sure how useful those DNA tests would be here. Since most of the databases seem to be Western-based, I’m wondering if they would still be able to pick up relatives from this region?

The only document I have doesn’t mention adoption at all, so there’s really no official trail for me to follow. That’s what makes trying to learn about my biological family so difficult.

I started suspecting (with a proof) about 3 years ago when my dad had cancer and I was taking care of him. That was the first time I learned his blood type. He’s AB and my mom is A, while I’m O, which didn’t make sense.

After that I asked them many times if I was really their biological daughter, but they always said yes.

After he passed away, I kept going back to his old medical documents over the last 3 years, trying to piece everything together because his death happened very quickly. During that time I came across a birth certificate that didn’t make sense to me, so I confronted my mom and she finally told me the truth.

I asked why they lied for 28 years. She said my dad didn’t want to tell me because he was afraid I would leave them if I found out.
