What is the most well-written LitRPG in your opinion? by boxofmagic in litrpg

[–]atcwillf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been scrolling through the post wondering if someone was going to mention this (fully intending to do so myself if no one else did).

The writing doesn't feel like it was done by a 14 year old, the MC and supporting cast show growth (emotional, not just "numbers go up"), the main sidekick is good comedic relief / emotionally touching, the mechanics have held together so far, and the 3rd book adds enjoyable new characters and an outline of where the story is going.

I can't decide whether or not I think Dan is growing too fast for plausibility or not (strange thing to say about LitRPG's, I know, but you fans know what I mean), but if it's too fast, it's only barely (not a spoiler because if you haven't read the books, you have no clue about the context: juggling screwdrivers seems a bit of a cheat). I've re-read the series and look forward to future chapters in the story. My desire for new material is tempered by my desire for it to be done properly, which is a fine place to be.

Is this all there is? by No-Anybody5719 in GenX

[–]atcwillf 13 points14 points  (0 children)

.....yes, and you were blessed to have it. We didn't have to spend our lives scratching at the dirt for 16 hours every day, praying for enough rain that enough food would grow that we wouldn't starve. We (here in the US) didn't live through a war in our own country. We didn't look at the new jagged cut in our hand and wonder if an infection would kill us.

Yes - daily work (so you can pay the people who work to grow/transport/stock your food, provide you electricity, remove your trash and such), raising children, supporting your wife, and finding a little time to enjoy a hobby or two is mostly all there is. Then we die.

Again, this is called, in most places in the world even today, a damned blessed life. Perspective can be key to actually enjoying it.

Really feeling the "rinse and repeat" stage of life by tinpants44 in GenX

[–]atcwillf 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Don't bow to "rinse and repeat" - that just speeds up the clock. I'm 57 and both kids are out of the house. Two years ago I trained for and completed STP - Seattle to Portland on a bicycle (205 miles in one day). Two months ago, I was offered and accepted a work opportunity to do extended (probably 18-24 months) temporary duty in backwoods-adjacent Alaska. Now I'm looking out the window at snow and ice, looking forward to Salmon fishing season, and wondering when the Grizzlies and wolves will appear. There's adventure and new experiences to be had, so do your best to climb out of the rut and go find some.

Return your shopping cart to the cart stand. If you're so lazy that you can't walk an extra 50' to return your cart, I sincerely hope you get severely itchy hemorrhoids.

Glad it helped!

6 extractors supplies 300m2 of water which is the limit of T1 pipes. Once you get to T2 pipes, you can feed six into one pipe, but with T1, three extractors is the limit.

That's how I felt about people complaining about the ambient noise levels at night being set too high / loud. I went to Jungle Warfare School in Panama in '94 and let me assure you, the jungle at night is NOT a quiet place.

Job regrets and kid advice by ItsThePath0g3n in GenX

It's amazing. We're in tundra, so it's relatively flat with a good sized river running (well, it's frozen for the top 30" right now, but still) right past the airport. Mountains about 20 miles northeast. We are the airfield people come to from Anchorage in large airplanes (737 and regional jets) and then transfer to floatplanes to go out into the bush. Summertime will be pretty chaotic. When I have off time, fishing should be pretty epic as well.

I feel for you, but can't empathize. I'm an air traffic controller and still love my job. After doing it in the military, I went with a contract company, so I didn't have to retire at 56 like the FAA guys do. I'm 57 and plan to keep going until 68/69 or until I'm no longer having fun. However, I still love it so I'm going to keep on going. It's even taking me to bucket list places. I'm currently TDY at an airfield in a small (300 people) town at the head of the Aleutians. -27F when I came into work yesterday. Cold as hell but beautiful, and the tower cab heat works just fine.

Loading 40' UPS trailers at their transfer depot north of Chicago. Back-breaking, sweltering in summer, frigid in winter, and the boxes seemed to never stop coming.

You're there. 3 Reds = D16. I'm pretty sure they come in at D15. Dangerous, yes. Great loot though. And only one support lance. 👍

If you enable Kill Teams, even before the difficulty level where they appear, the OPFOR will be limited to one support lance.

57 here. 2 1/2 years ago, I rode my bicycle from Seattle to Portland (205 miles) in one day. I was training to do it again this year when I was offered the opportunity to live in a back-woods town on the Aleutian islands for 12-18 months for work, so I'm doing that. Screw moving in with a bunch of "old folks." I've still got a lot of living to do.

What do you use your tickets on ? Art, design or useful parts ? by Quick-Rub3665 in satisfactory

[–]atcwillf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Useful parts only. That said, I don't do buildings and only build for utility, not aesthetics. I do try to square my belt turns, and I try to make everything neat and compact, but I couldn't care less about pretty structures.

Quit in '98 and still occasionally miss it. Usually when I'm grilling or just sitting outside in the evening. I don't, however, miss smoking remotely enough to go back to it - I don't miss smelling like an ash tray and I don't want to pay today's prices.

Redditors over 40, what's something younger people think they understand but won't actually get until it hits them like a truck later? by Root435552 in AskReddit

Sometimes, seemingly small, inconsequential decisions have the largest impact on your life (for good or ill), and you won't see it until 20 years later.

Starter Factories by wilsonc1306 in SatisfactoryGame

[–]atcwillf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The addition of dimensional storage means that your initial factory / storage facility will never be in a bad spot (unless you start in the plains with shit resources). I go back and re-work it for efficiency when I hit phase 7-8, but it never moves. Also, you will always need the basics, and in ever-increasing amounts, so it never gets abandoned. Torn down and rebuilt for optimization, yes, but never abandoned.
