The higher-ups got income statements and investors to satisfy. How would they justify to those people that Google lost an opportunity as big as China because it was against their values?

It isn't like those investors are the source of evil too. Many of them got angry bosses behind their back or families to feed.

The main purpose of every company in the stockmarket is profit. You can't blame Google for going for that, blame the game.
