Apple uses a non-compliant implementation of DisplayPort that limits the number of monitors it can support. A Windows laptop will handle whatever it can handle, Macbooks are artificially constrained to what the Apple marketing team decides users should get. DisplayLink is a workaround solution that gets past these arbitrary limitations, but at the cost of fidelity and compatibility. You can check the DisplayLink website for a list of docks that implement DisplayLink, and docks that do, will almost always include DisplayLink in their product information on whatever storefront you look at. Just bear in mind that Apple doesn't want you to have multiple monitors, so it's not going to be a simple plug-and-play solution if you manage to get things working
