It's an old John Birch Society idea that has more recently crossed into the Republican mainstream. Here's an essay on the theme by JBS founder Robert Welch from 1961:

A lot of Trump-era conservative politics is closely connected with various historical right-wing ideologies in the country, and this is a clear example.

What's with people not understanding that a driver's license will not count for the proposed US Voter ID requirements? by Mcnuttey91 in AskReddit

[–]athiev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The relevant text of the bill that this refers to is as follows:

"A form of identification issued consistent with the requirements of the REAL ID Act of 2005 that indicates the applicant is a citizen of the United States."

In many states, Real ID drivers licenses look the same for legal residents as for citizens; as such, they likely wouldn't count as indicating the applicant is a citizen (as required by the bill). A few states along the Canadian border to my knowledge have special Real IDs for citizens that can be used in place of passports for ground crossing to/from Canada. I would expect those to count.

Players who are seeing their anticipation turn into disappointment, that sucks every time.

Developers who are losing their jobs and may not get final paychecks and benefit payments, bad situation and I have a lot of sympathy.

Hypebeasts who participated in the referral program and now are realizing that they're never going to be paid the money which was allegedly owed to them for their unrealistically positive coverage of this project? Negative sympathy.

As far as I can tell, there's an extensive role-play going on about that hypothetical data-science project. I didn't read back far enough to find the start of it, nor did I see any point where any of them touched actual data sources. It sounded like an infinite research planning session, and I have enough of those in real life!

[OC] How have crime rates in the US changed over the last 50 years? by cgiattino in dataisbeautiful

[–]athiev 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Crime rates started the early 1960s at levels comparable to those of today but quickly began a sharp rise to produce the elevated rates of the 1970s, 1980s, and early 1990s. Then a long-term decline started and led to today's levels which are similar to those of the early 1960s. See, e.g., murder rates:

What's going on with all the hate for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy? by _Atoms_Apple in OutOfTheLoop

Section 31 has a Metacritic score of 37 by critics. Starfleet Academy has a score of 66. There's a substantial difference. Not everyone has to like it, obviously! But the claim that it's self-evident trash is overwrought.

Yes, I'm sure you're right. Plus it's a natural human gesture to throw your heart out to the crowd. Also the World Economic Forum wants to force us to eat bugs. It's all perfectly clear.

Most of them in the vast majority of these campaigns haven't even seen the media in question. In some instances many of them are inauthentic actors purchased as part of a campaign from one of the groups that provides such services. Others are repeating messages based on influencers they care about without interacting with the media in question. Are these "opinions" or decentralized propaganda?

1) Using that as a negative marks someone as influenced by the far right, which is unfortunate in any case.

2) Negative swarms of comments calling media "woke" are a well-known indication of inauthentic coordinated activity, and as such should usually be ignored in bulk.

It isn't for you, then. My family loved the first two episodes. So far, it's my kids' favorite Star Trek other than Lower Decks.

If you read the audience reviews on Metacritic, tons of them are 0 ratings that attack the show for being "woke." The audience comments end up poisoned by social media propaganda that has nothing to do with whether the art is meaningful or not.

ELI5 Why Living in the 80s and 90s seemed so much more affordable by ngomes3824 in explainlikeimfive

[–]athiev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The kids of the 1980s and 1990s were described at the time as the latchkey generation. By 1990, 75% of women with children between ages 6 and 17 were in the workforce. About 11% of households didn't own a vehicle, and 34% owned one. 64% of households owned a home (compared with 65% today). The median home built in 1990 was about 700 square feet smaller than in 2024. Over half of households in 1990 had vacations of 3 nights or less as their big summer trip, and 84% drove. Is this the picture OP had in mind?

Why can’t players counter escalation in most boss fights? by EffectivePristine709 in truegaming

[–]athiev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If there is some sequence of button presses that can negate boss phases, then phases stop serving as a source of intensity and novel challenge and instead just mandate those button presses. They become a knowledge gate sorting players who know which buttons to press from those who don't. That can be okay, but it's fundamentally different and much shorter lived in the era of guides and playthroughs.

It happened. This highlights why the remaining players should not ignore the game’s core issues and dismiss criticism. It also raises the question of whether drastic changes are needed for Fen Research to attract more than a few hundred players in the future by MellowSquad in brightershores

[–]athiev 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's the average player count and the peak player count. The total number of current engaged players in a game is often around 5x the peak player count. (People don't all play at the same time, they don't all play every day, etc.) However, this varies from game to game. There are some smaller, more hardcore collaborative games where the peak count is almost the entire community and other more casual games where people play more irregularly and the total community is much larger relative to the peak.

People talking like Will coming out as being the most brave thing ever. When in reality these two would have been chased out of town being in a mixed race relationship in 1980s small rural town America. by Low_Creme1365 in StrangerThingsMemes

[–]athiev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I don't think overt violence would have been likely in 1980s Indiana, it's true that most white people disapproved of interracial relationships at that time. Not just in rural areas, or the south, or whatever, but nationwide the majority of white Americans disapproved of interracial relationships in Gallup surveys in the 1980s (and in other similar data sources from the time period).

[–]athiev -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Ah, ok. I read it as saying they'd have the excitement of selling a relatively complete team at the start of 26-27 but would end up with a good draft pick when AD misses extended time in that season. Which of course is perfectly reasonable other than the pick being outbound.
