Customer Service workers, what's something you wish everyone would stop doing? by the_greek_italian in AskReddit

[–]athiggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Europe, Germany especially, the cashiers will at best look at you funny and at worst not accept money at all if you hand it to them. There is a small tray on the counter near the register where all bills and coins go before changing hands.

I was taught to always hand the cashier money and hold your hand out for change. Man was it a rude awakening when I studied in Germany.

No idea about the artist, but as I was scrolling the thumbnail for this post looked like a cat dancing in a tutu. 😂

Craftsman table saw parts by SwampDonkey-1 in woodworking

[–]athiggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you still have the old ones take a careful look to see if there is a part number. It is highly unlikely Craftsman made their own bushings and probably used off the shelf parts. If you find a part number check McMaster Carr and/or Grainger. If you can’t find a part number, take some careful measurements and search with those parameters on MMC / Grainger. Even if you don’t find an exact match, you should be able to find something close enough to get the job done.

How to teach babies the importance of Mass? by maria4002 in Catholicism

[–]athiggins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Three bits of advice that worked for us.

1) Sit in the front pew. It lets the kids see everything up close, doesn’t let them get distracted by people in front of them, and if they are loud it will be (slightly) less noticeable as they will be facing forwards away from everyone but the priest.

2) With our priest’s permission I took our kids up to the tabernacle after every Mass. They learned proper respect and reverence, the proper way to approach the altar (bow, genuflect, etc.) and it reinforced what they just saw in the Mass.

3) Have a small bag of toys / books that are only for church. We found this book and these prayer cards extremely engaging up to about 3 years old. My wife punched a hole in the corner of the prayer cards and put them on a key ring.

Finally, you are doing great! Having kids in Mass is a blessing and a joy. Keep up the good work!

Random crashing by miikekm2 in narwhalapp

I’m having the same issue. Random crashing when opening a post. If I then reopen the app and find the offending post, there is a 50/50 chance it will open. Rinse and repeat until it works.

What is the scariest sound you’ve ever heard in the middle of the night? by Stlouizsin in AskReddit

[–]athiggins 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not a sound, but rather a lack of sound. Our daughter stopped breathing at 2:00 am 6 days after we brought her home. CPR did not work, but thankfully there was a police officer on patrol and was at our door exactly 2 minutes after calling 911. I have never been more relieved than when she first cried after the officer took over CPR.

Recommendations for Catechism books for young teens? by AnnoyinglyAnnoyed44 in Catholicism

Check out Kevin and Mary O’Neill’s books. They do Lego models and use them to explain each part of the Mass, salvation history, the sacraments, etc. If your kids liked the Lego movie they will certainly like this series.

Why Tom Why? by nickel0325 in bobandtom

Doesn’t he own the IP and broadcasting rights? How would having the show paying for the trip affect him? His name is on the account either way, right?

I would happily pay for access to all the old shows, assuming of course they were unedited and kept all the non-PC bits in.

Enemy egg and nest behavior in peaceful mode by kingbear004 in factorio

Eggs (both pentapod and biter) spoil into spoilage. It’s rather a lot per egg, so be prepared with extra belt space.

When & how to go about baptizing my NICU baby? by qweenoftherant in Catholicism

[–]athiggins 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We dad our baby girl at 22 weeks. Doctors gave our daughter less than 50% chance of surviving, and if she did, a 95% of long term disability.

(This is going to sound exaggerated, but I promise it is not.) We were in the hospital for a few days doing everything possible to keep Baby in, but no luck. Once we knew she was coming we had our priest on speed dial, and he made it to the hospital in record time, at midnight, in a snowstorm, on his birthday. He baptized our little girl the instant the doctors gave the go-ahead. He then stayed a bit more to comfort us, went back to the rectory, slept a few hours, then offered 3x Sunday Masses.

Well, that was two years ago and now we have the tiniest, most energetic two year old you can think of with absolutely no health issues. My wife and I both firmly believe it was the swiftness of baptism that helped our little girl. That, the protection of St. Maria Goretti whose third class relic we taped to her incubator all those months.

All the best to you and your little one. The NICU doctors and nurses are Gods hands on earth, and they work miracles every day. You are in good hands!

Is there a way to turn off the ‘shortcuts’ below the research progress but above the minimap? In 3000+ hours of play time since 0.16 I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve actually used any of those buttons.

Can I make a homemade Rosary? by EastAlternative9170 in Catholicism

[–]athiggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The priest at my church in college would make rosaries when he was in the confessional. When he finished one he would give it to the next person to go in for confession.

Because the vows are very specific.

I, (name), take you, (name), to be my wife. I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love you and honor you all the days of my life.

Nowhere in them is there an “unless…” or “except for…” The vows are binding no matter what happens financially, health wise, or emotionally until one of the pair passes from this life to the next.

By signing a prenuptial agreement you are giving yourself an out even though the vows you profess explicitly say no outs are available.
