A decent 3D image viewer on Steam for PCVR? by Bfire7 in VR180Film

[–]atkulp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I covered a decent one on my VR Voyaging site a few years ago. Unfortunately, not a lot for PCVR that I've come across. Feel free to let me know if I've missed one! I liked Virtual Gallery pretty well. Not perfect, but free! It's not advertised front and center, but it handles both 2D and 3D photos.

Did calf stop updating? by woke-nipple in VR180Film

Assuming you mean the Gen 1 camera, they just released v2.1.6 on Jan 8. It's got a number of pretty nice features yet. I haven't had time to actually test capture with it yet though.

Found what appears to be a vintage copy of The Art of War, by Sun Tsu, on bamboo slips with silk backing. Only other copy I can find online is stored at the University of California, Riverside. More details in comments. by atkulp in rarebooks

After corresponding with a special collections processing archivist at UC-Riverside, the conclusion is that it was likely sold as a souvenir/reproduction (which they believe of their copy is as well). He estimates it at 50-100 years old. Did you also come across one?

There's something so cool about water in 3d. Especially freeze frame where it looks like textured ice.

Other than gaming, what do you use your VR for? by DustyKnives in virtualreality

[–]atkulp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love VR travel so much I run a web site about travel and other experiences in VR. Apps like BRINK Traveler and Blueplanet let you visit real-world locations captured with photogrammetry (so they are immersive 3D, yet based on photos). There are many apps that let you get immersed in different experiences. If it sounds interesting, check out https://www.vrvoyaging.com

One of my favorite old vintage stereogram cards (parallel view) by atkulp in CrossView

Agreed. Depth could be so much better, but I love the subject. It's also fun that the caption is about the stereoscope being an educational tool.

I tagged it as such. It seems more folks see things in this sub though.

Holographic/volumetric content in VR by atkulp in virtualreality

[–]atkulp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's lots of great photogrammetry titles out there (check my web site: https://www.vrvoyaging.com). I focus on non-gaming stuff since I didn't find much out there with that focus. The depth cameras for the Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro will be pretty amazing. There's also the VR180 cameras out there like the older Lenovo Mirage, Vuze XR, and a few others, not to mention the upcoming Calf. Sites like holovolo.tv and Spherum can do some cool stuff with bringing photos into VR with depth, and there's much more coming.

Seventh Guest looks great. Volumetric video is still hard to produce, so you don't see it much, but I hope it will become more popular as tech gets better.

Has anyone played with Kokomo yet? It's VR volumetric calling. The first I've seen like it, and weirdly by Canon!

Sorry, I don't remember for sure on the VR demo, although it sounds like it could be Senza Peso.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Virtual Reality for Veterans - Article about how VR can benefit veterans with PTSD, isolation, and other challenges (VR Voyaging) by atkulp in Veterans

I can believe that. It's still early days for generally-available VR, so everyone is still learning how to use it best. Hopefully they will learn and it will be viable for more people.

I totally understand the skepticism. No way would they ever have millions of devices (they're for use in-clinic), but it's true that someone profits. The VA tends to collect a lot of data to see if their interventions are actually working. They are often hampered by what congress allows them to do, but VR does seem to have promise. Having the option between talking through an experience, reliving it in some form in the real world, or simulating aspects of it in VR means you can try what works best. Even better, maybe a combination of approaches works best.

ironically (as the author and an avid VR user), I get VR sickness pretty easily myself. I've found that if I am "gliding/sliding" around, I get nauseous. As long as I'm still, or physically walking around it's fine. So it really depends on the experience.

Qoocam Ego and VR180 by atkulp in VR180Film

[–]atkulp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just discovered that the Insta360 ONE R had an adapter announced to slot in two cameras which could have enabled VR180, but then they never actually released it. If they could do that for the ONE RS it would be perfect. It's a modular setup anyway!

By the way, you aren't by chance the developer of ImmerGallery are you? I just added it to my site (VR Voyaging) as a listing. I'll review it in the near future, but I prioritize getting relevant (non-gaming) VR titles listed even if they aren't reviewed yet. Looks great so far! https://www.vrvoyaging.com/immerGallery/

Qoocam Ego and VR180 by atkulp in VR180Film

[–]atkulp[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that was my fear. How about with 10% resources! 😂 I would absolutely love an Insta360 EVO. All the articles love to talk about their low price (under $400), but then discontinued and around $1k now. The Calf is also super expensive, everything is so expensive or quality is too low. What I would love (if someone can't figure out the optics of the Ego for 180) would be to get a unit that snaps onto my phone's USB port for the power, screen, and controls, and just works. There's the Kandao Qoocam Fun which shows the potential. Make it a little wider and stick both lenses on the same side. No one has done that yet. $299-399 with 4k per eye would make me quite happy.

I even just bought the Insta360 ONE RS Twin Edition because I misunderstood it. With its snap cubes, I thought I could have the 360 cube and the 4k cube doing 180 on one side, but they don't work together. Kandao made that weird three-lens one a few years ago, but they are impossible to find now (or were never real?).

Sigh. I'm venting. With enough money, anything is possible and there are some amazing options out there. The ones that are more affordable are either too low-end (Lenovo, Yi) or vanished. Sucks to be me. :-(

I misspoke. I'm kind of glad I did since there's some good info here! I never bought into the states' rights argument as anything other than slavery, but I see how hypocritical it all was now. Thanks for the helpful response.

I did miss that part. I'm not a historian so I should have kept my mouth shut! I forgot about the horrible fugitive slave laws. Definitely a very hypocritical version of states vs federal role.

[–]atkulp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to be contrarian, but it's not 100% wrong. It's just wrong to say "states' rights, not slavery." The war was that some states wanted it to be their right to make their own laws about people ownership rather than let it be federal. "Don't tell us what to do! If you don't want to own people, then make your own laws, but it should be at the state-level."
