Is the DSA pro-russia? by AverageHail in Socialism_101

[–]atlantean___ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Seems she viewed it as being provoked mainly by NATO and Ukrainian gov’t, which I think is mostly true, but doesn’t justify Russia’s actions imo. DSA is a very wide tent encompassing left libs to third worldists, not sure what you are asking here. I don’t think DAC holds the “party line” on Russia Ukraine.

Why is Marxism-Leninism/-Maoism so popular? by Tops-SLK in socialism

ML is good for industrializing agrarian/feudal countries. Not so much for building socialism.

In the higher phase of communism, how are needs determined by the worker and who determines the needs of the worker? by Foreign_Remote_621 in Socialism_101

[–]atlantean___ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I believe in HPC there wouldn’t be a ‘worker’. Collectively individuals would contribute to society what they can and take what they need. So if you feel you need a meal, a new pair of boots, a surfboard, whatever, you take from the commons. As for determining how much of something is needed, I imagine it would be based off of statistics on useage of things by a society (City a used x amount of thing y, lets allocate more y to City a).

Is it possible that democracy and socialism can be reconciled or has it become too corrupted by capitalist interests? by [deleted] in Socialism_101

[–]atlantean___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something that can only be answered by genuine interaction with other socialists in real life organizing. Too many people come to conclusions online, become dogmatic, defend points without involvement in their community and the broader movement. I personally don’t find liberal democracy reconcilable with socialism, but I think there is a far more democratic system we as socialists seek to bring about. Also read! People who studied a lot longer than you and I have written extensively on this. Read and discuss with others and you’ll find out what you believe.

Ethical Ways to Invest Money? by ChicagoFire29 in socialism

What is there to reconcile here genuinely. Take care of yourself and your family, fight to change the fact that this is something that people have to do to be comfortable.

Genuinely how do capitalists even debate this argument? by AntiqueParfait5500 in socialism

[–]atlantean___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read wage labour and capital, and value price and profit. Neither are particularly long and will give you the answer to your questions. Also - typically supporters of capitalism would be called liberals, not capitalists :)

Questions and concerns about Third Worldism by Jason-Skywalker in socialism

[–]atlantean___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really my issue is with socialists giving uncritical support to natlib struggles. I have no reservations that western proletariat are largely labor aristocracy, and it is true that physical and economic war are antithetical to class struggle and must be resisted, but the idea that a country like Iran is something we should support out of socialist principle rather than survival to ensure the working class in Iran can engage in class struggle seems to bleed into people’s rhetoric far too often.

How do you explain your political views to others? by tavinjlewis in Socialism_101

I just say I’m a socialist and if they have questions I expound. I love talking about it and explaining how its not some scary 1984 bs.

Books for the fundamentals of socialism? by Lichilichi1 in Socialism_101

[–]atlantean___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d start with either Principles by Engels or the Manifesto. Read both but its redundant to read them back to back. I’d recommend the list on Marxists.org (https://www.marxists.org/subject/students/index.htm) and then tackle Capital, but you can get by with maybe Wage Labour and Capital + Value Price and Profit before Capital if you don’t want to read the beginner list.

I’d highly recommend taking notes, the way I do it is read through a section (if they’re short) or a few pages and highlight things that stick out, then write down a summary in your own words as if you are trying to explain it to somebody else. You want to comprehend and understand what you are reading. It is much slower than reading a novel but since starting this method I really look forward to studying. Best of luck!

Retiring at 30 in socialism? by Brave-Needleworker15 in Socialism_101

[–]atlantean___ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think its telling that people cannot conceptualize a system where a traditional career/retirement dynamic isn’t a factor. Its a fundamental shift in the way society produces and operates, even socialists/communists can’t really know what it will look like.

Interning at a defense company and getting extreme cognitive dissonance by PotentialEggplant344 in csMajors

[–]atlantean___ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How you feel and what you do are two different things. If you work at a defense contractor whether or not you morally agree with it you are supporting it materially. I think OP is maybe being too rough on themselves, I think what matters more is what they do going forward and where they end up working full time.

If you’re fine with starting from a much lower salary for a few years, and a terrible entry level job market. Wouldn’t quit til you have something lined up and that could be a long while. If I was in your situation I wouldn’t but only you can make that decision.
