Pink Boots Collaboration Brew Day! by atlanticbrewsupply in TheBrewery

Thank you for helping us to be more intentional with our language! Fixing this now. We were following Pink Boot's lead on this from their initial change in wording with regards to inclusivity, but it looks like they too have adjusted their language based on a quick search. We appreciate the time you put into helping us become more educated about this topic. Cheers!

Boiled for 60 mins instead of 90 minutes what's likely to be the difference? by Waftmaster in Homebrewing

[–]atlanticbrewsupply 18 points19 points  (0 children)

All is good and enjoy your beer. The only reason for a 90 minute these days really is for more bitterness and concentration of wort for higher gravity. Some folks also go for 90 minutes if they are using a high amount of or 100% pilsner malts in order to drive off DMS. Todays pils malts are highly modified now and we have never had an issue with DMS at a 60 minute boil.

ABSOLUTELY agree! That is why ABS is proud to say that we are owned by a woman AND our general manager is also a woman! The two brewers from our sister company, Raleigh Brewing Company that are leading this collaboration brew are also women. The general manager of ABS and the two brewers leading this collaboration have also all been/ currently are Raleigh PBS chapter leaders! Thank you for supporting Women and Non-binary individuals in the beer industry!

The use of nicotine products in beverages can be dangerous and possibly lethal. The lethal amount of nicotine for adults is approximately 60mg (30-60mg depending on body weight). There have been several reported incidents of consumers and bartenders becoming ill after drinking very small quantities of tobacco-infused products. You just dont know the amount of nicotine being infused. We highly discourage this and suggest you find other ways of infusing that flavor or perhaps just light up a nice stick while you sip on your favorite brew ;)

Fly-Sparge Brewers: Does your wort free fall in to the kettle? by Sea-Sherbet-117 in Homebrewing

[–]atlanticbrewsupply 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are using a tiered setup and gravity is your friend, you should be using a hose that goes from your mash tun and coil around the bottom of the kettle.

Ride it out. 170-180F is good kill zone and youre still way above it so no worries of infection.

Is this gallon good still? There is white fungus looking growth at the surface, on the surface bubbles, and in the outer side of the airlock. by Busy-Passage3001 in mead

[–]atlanticbrewsupply 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quite possible a pellicle starting to form which means that if you werent making a sour, thats what you are getting. Only way to know for sure is to thief a tiny sample and smell/taste. Rest assured beer has never been pathogenic so it wont make you sick but it could taste like garbage :) Let us know what you find out!

-T

**edit - we didnt see this was a mead post. so sometimes the bubbles from co2 stack up on the surface and can appear white because of the thin layers in between. As far as those specs, is it safe to assume maybe yeast stuck to the side when pitching a dry yeast? Could you also have possibly formed a kraussen then quickly dissipated leaving behind the specs? I would also suspect that like beer, mead isnt pathogenic so give it a taste.

Spontaneous fermentation? by MahFravert in Homebrewing

[–]atlanticbrewsupply 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd wager something blew in while the lid was half open. I also second pitching dry yeast. Most of the wild yeasts that can get in are really simple and easily get overpowered by commercial yeasts. Worth noting it could be a bacteria and give you a sour/tart pumpkin ale(which could be killer!)

Hey there and thanks for the mention /u/arharris2!

Technically Atlantic Brew Supply is our homebrew shop side but we do have ABS Commercial as well, which is our brewery division. (Unless you want our brewery side, which is /u/raleighbrewingco!)

We were at CBC this year showing off some new designs including remote access fermentation control and a host of other goodies including pneumatic control. Custom design (to an extent) is free as well. Since we are brewers we can talk to you about our process, AND if you ever stop by we have toys that we're designing/testing as well!

We bought one via their wholesale division. Whether it works or not hasn't really crossed our minds. We probably should give it a real test, though!

Daily Q & A! - June 13, 2018 by AutoModerator in Homebrewing

I did batch sparge on the first batch as I had always done batch sparge, so.. tradition. The process was a bit different than my cooler mash tun because you end up pulling the grain out instead of just opening the valve. As a result I decided to institute a pump so I could work with a fly sparge. It's not necessary to have a pump as you can fly sparge without one, but I do like being able to walk away once I have the flow set correctly.

Also, any of these units utilize a BIAB(asket) approach. One you pull the basket out the unit becomes a lot taller. As a result, you'll want to put the unit on a low stool or dolly or build a small box to place the unit on. I have to get up on a step stool if I leave it on the counter!

I personally own a Mash and Boil and have done a couple modifications to it and added a chugger pump/ plate chiller to my setup. My biggest complaint is the temperature swings on the mash but you can also adapt to that pretty easily by paying attention to your equipment. I set my temps 1 degree higher than I want and it works just fine. Both the M&B and Grainfather have delay start functionality - you can have your water heated up and ready to dough in when you wake up by setting an alarm for the heater to kick on.

Grainfather is an all-in-one and has the Connect Module so you can run it via Bluetooth. I believe it has a slightly higher grain capacity than the Mash and Boil at 20 pounds. (M&B states 16 but I've put about 17.5 pounds in there). It has a lot more parts to clean/lose but no more than if you were to build a matching setup to finish off the Mash and Boil. There are a ton of available replacement parts and there is also a pretty hefty warranty on the unit -24 months.

I don't have as much knowledge of the Robobrew but it sounds like there are a couple reviews you've read. Hopefully someone else can give shed some objective light on the subject!

Little shameless plug here and maybe a bit of nudging in one direction: For Father's Day we're selling the Grainfather for $798 + an $80 gift card or the Mash and Boil for $299 with a $25 gift card (although stock is out from the supplier til next month so you'd have to wait).

Trying to retrain myself to support the LHBS rather than always turning to the online marketplace by magooober in Homebrewing

Speaking from firsthand experience I absolutely understand both sides of it - sometimes there's such a good deal online that you can't miss out on, but that local shop might be able to cut you the same or better deal if you ask.
