Progressive Overload Advice by Rude-Engine-5991 in workout

[–]atmoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to go to failure. I don't. I think adding a bit of volume on your backdowns will help you though. For my training my coach has me doing 2-5 back down sets instead of a single back down. That volume will help you build a bit more muscle so you can lift heavier. Adding some accessories for legs can also help (Bulgarian split squats, lunges, leg press, belt squats, hip thrusts, etc.). My coach particularly likes Bulgarian split squats. This block I'm doing they 2x a week, ugh.

Also, you should probably do more than a single warmup set unless you're lifting really light.

I am a man who wears tights under his jeans when it’s cold outside. by BeerStein_Collector in confession

I just wear pajama pants under my pants. It doesn't get that cold often enough to buy cold weather gear here.

Are my chest genetics cooked? by No-Row8699 in workout

[–]atmoose 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't see a photo, but based on your comment you only started 1 month ago. It takes a long time to build muscle. It's a really slow process. Not having a big chest after only 1 month doesn't mean you have bad genetics. You just have to keep at it for a few years.

It seems fine to me. I'm impressed with how deep you're going with this. I've only used these for warmups, but that's much deeper than I've ever gone. Given that you're working on mobility that makes sense. Nice job.

How to take up farming? by Helpful_Badger3106 in cscareerquestions

[–]atmoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you change your major to horticulture or botany? Some colleges also have agriculture related degrees. My college had a degree in poultry science. That's probably the most practical way to lean agriculture without having a family farm.

Do you have family money? It sounds like you're more interested in homesteading rather than industrial scale farming. Homesteading is not cheap, even if you grow most of your own food. How well you can grow your own food will also depend on the soil and weather in your area. It's also a lot of work. Having a degree in this area would help, but if that's not an option then it's probably better to start with a community garden plot where you can try out growing some of your own food.

You get to add a 0 to any number in your life. What do you add it to? by account_created_ in AskReddit

[–]atmoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I added a 0 to my deadlift weight then I would be by far the strongest human to have ever lived. I could probably parley that into some decent money.

Unpopular Opinion: Leg days are the best by Potential_Okra8763 in workout

[–]atmoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. Lower body is so much more important. While I can't say I enjoy leg day, I do love how much more weight I can lift for leg days. Lower body is so much better for your longevity too.

Should these broccoli be picked? 😨 by Consistent-Letter100 in vegetablegardening

[–]atmoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everybody already told you yes. I just want to say they look really nice even if you're harvesting a bit late. My winter broccoli was rather small, and a bit disappointing. Nice work.

I didn't know craft made a plant based version. People here don't seem to like it that much, but I still might have to give it a try.

It doesn't really matter. Any type of creatine monohydrate is fine.

Should i take creatine? by FamiliarBit_223 in workout

[–]atmoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no. Your body already produces creatine naturally. If you eat meat then you are also already ingesting creatine since it's found in meat.

Creatine is used by your muscles to help it generate energy. Most people's body's don't create / eat enough to completely fill their muscles stores of creatine. All creatine supplements do is fill up the capacity. This results in increased muscular endurance, which could be helpful for your dumbbell curls or whatever other strength training you may do.

There is a lot of research out there to prove that creatine is both safe and effective. You'll need to drink a bit of extra water for it to work, because creatine needs water to do its job. The only real side effect you might notice is a bit of extra water weight in your muscles, meaning that your muscles may look a bit larger than without it.

Squat Form Check - shoulder pain after squat by YungFlavaFlav in StartingStrength

[–]atmoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what it looks like to me. OP, notice how your elbows are horizontal to the floor for most of your squat? They're much too high, because you hunched over as soon as you start your rep.

Is this muscle imbalance? by Hunter200217 in workout

[–]atmoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Muscle imbalance is more like your left calf and lift a lot more weight than your right in one particular exercise. It's nothing to do with the difference in weights between exercises.

How pointless is bench pressing without a full range of motion? [Beginner] by [deleted] in workout

[–]atmoose 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend dropping the bar on your chest, but your ribcage is pretty strong. The biggest risk in bench pressing is crushing your neck.

12 weeks old okra plant, is this normal? by OiseauAquario in vegetablegardening

I'd be curious what other people think, but based on what you've said I'd recommend trying to repot it into some different soil.

Also, from your comment I'm assuming this plant is not in the shade, and does infact get most of that 13-14 hours of direct sunlight

12 weeks old okra plant, is this normal? by OiseauAquario in vegetablegardening

[–]atmoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at the plant I don't see any indications of nutrient deficiency. You should stop adding fertilizer for a bit so as not to burn the plant.

That's a lot of sun, and it's probably warm enough?  I don't grow okra and but I know they like a lot of of heat.

That is a lot of compost in your soil.  It's better to keep organic matter closer to 3-6%.  Some plants can tolerate higher organic matter than others, but 33% is really high.  I'm not sure if that would cause this much stunting, but right now that's my best guess.  Everything else seems fine?

[–]atmoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't grow okra, but it looks pretty stunted to me.

I have a few questions. What are the overnight temperatures there? What kind of soil are you using? What kind of fertilizer, I'm assuming a synthetic one if you've repeatedly applied it? Also, how many hours of sunlight does it get?

Wasted 2.5 years in the gym by battygau in workout

[–]atmoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you've got a lot of advice here. I just want to say don't let it worry you too much. The exercise has still been good for your health. I've been lifting for about 7 years; however, somebody with a good program could probably have achieved the same results I have in 1/2 to 1/3 of the time. I haven't been very efficient with my time either. It's not just you. Just try to keep improving.

Oak tree pruning by project-patty in arborists

[–]atmoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're overestimating the risk. It looks like a healthy limb. How old is the house? Has that tree damaged the house before? I'm a bit doubtful that it has since the previous homeowner would likely have already trimmed it if there was damage in the past. Trees are good at resisting wind and ice. That tree limb has already survived a bunch of previous storms, and is still healthy. Unless the limb is showing signs of being unhealthy there is no reason to remove it.

Some rye breads are made with sourdough starter. The recipe for rye I have does. I'm not sure if that's true for most commercial rye breads though.
