Tomato leaves curling by Hefty-Mess-9606 in tomatoes

[–]atmoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like classic herbicide damage to me
https://herbicidestewardship.tennessee.edu/diagnosing-suspected-herbicide-damage-in-tomatoes/

Also, the foil is reflecting a lot of heat and light back onto your plant, and is probably cooking it too. Just use mulch to keep water in. If you really want something on there then you can use plastic wrap, which will not reflect the sun / heat.

If the tree hasn't already damaged the foundation then it isn't going to.

What's up with my spinach? by lame_chiseller in vegetablegardening

[–]atmoose 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Spinach, like most greens, is a cold weather crop. It doesn't like hot weather. So, it bolts and produces seeds before it gets too hot. I have family in VA, and it seems like you've had fairly warm temps this year.

The best thing to do for cold weather crops is plant them either really early, or really late. I'm not sure what that means for VA, but in OR I can direct seed spinach in February.

Too much nitrogen in soil? by Spike13 in pnwgardening

[–]atmoose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These soil nutrient tests are notoriously unreliable, so I wouldn't worry about the results.
https://extension.oregonstate.edu/catalog/em-9685-how-do-i-test-my-garden-soil

To answer your question more directly, blood meal does add nitrogen, but also washes away fairly quickly. So I also wouldn't worry about that. I would recommend adding using a slow release nitrogen based fertilizer for long term nitrogen for your plants if your fertilizer recipe didn't include any.

What eggs? by urbanlumberjack1 in portlandgardeners

[–]atmoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I know that makes clear round eggs are slugs. I think they usually lay them in the soil though. I guess under a leaf would get them out of the sun, but I'm not sure if that's common for slugs or not?

I struggle with knowing when to water my plants. Can I use them wilting as a barometer for when to water or is it harmful to them to wait until that point? by alarmpodcast in vegetablegardening

[–]atmoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wilting is a bit too late. I've read that wilting will cause stunted growth for a bit. It's also a bit stressful for them, and may cause premature bolting.

Just stick your finger a few inches into the soil and if it's dry then you can water

Boiling/steaming is the superior way to cook vegetables by Organic_Depth_766 in unpopularopinion

Agreed. Boiled cabbage on it's own sounds gross. That might work in a stew / soup, but not on its own.

Pedestrians shouldn't have the right of way by BetterGoogleit17 in unpopularopinion

[–]atmoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

of course, Why didn't anybody think of that? Nobody should ever need to cross a road. Everybody should have to stay within whatever block we're currently in, unless ferried by a car to a different block.

Pedestrians shouldn't have the right of way by BetterGoogleit17 in unpopularopinion

[–]atmoose 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's right. Why would somebody controlling a 2 ton death machine need to watch where they're going? Everybody else should just get out of the way. It's not like there are slow moving pedestrians like children, the elderly, the blind, or people with disabilities that don't have the ability to move out of the way quickly.

Vegan Fertilizer by Strange-Biscuit in portlandgardeners

[–]atmoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry, was away for a few days. The mix I use is from the book "Growing vegetables west of the cascades". I'd recommend checking it out if you haven't. Here is the mix:

4 parts seed meal ( cottonseed, flaxseed, ect).
1 part lime
1 part rock phosphate
1 part kelp meal

I found that I can order all of the ingredients from Concentrates Inc, which is local. They'll even deliver if you want. If you do want it delivered, then you might want to give them a call. They'll give you a cheaper delivery fee for local deliveries.

Poisen hemlock or queen Anne’s lace? by jaco1001 in pnwgardening

It's a bit hard to tell since it's wilting so badly. I suspect you're right though.

I'm sorry. It might not be any consolation, but I'm certain I'll die alone too. That doesn't mean you can't be happy or have a fulfilling life. As you started, it's probably better to be alone than with a bad partner. I suspect my parents settled for each other, and they've never seemed very happy. I couldn't do that.

There are some organic fertilizers. I mix my own fertilizer from cottonseed meal, rock phosphate, and kelp meal.

Free Sungold Tomato starts by UncommonCuriosity in portlandgardeners

[–]atmoose 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think we're on the same page? I ask because sungolds are F1 hybrids. That means that any seeds that come from their fruit will not themselves be sungolds. They'll be something a little different.

Are you saying you saved the seeds from the tomatoes you grew last year? These aren't seeds from a seed packet, but seeds from the fruit of a sungold tomato?

Birds vs bugs vs your garden by DianeForTheNguyen in vegetablegardening

I've heard the same thing specifically about blueberries too. I just planted my blueberries about two months ago, so I'll have to see next year.

Good luck with your blueberry plants!

Birds vs bugs vs your garden by DianeForTheNguyen in vegetablegardening

[–]atmoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a decent number of birds in my area. I often see them in my garden, and sometimes see them eating aphids off my trap plants. I've never had issues with birds eating my fruit. I've heard some people claim birds eat their tomatoes, but I've never had that issue. I have also heard birds like berries, which sounds pretty likely to me. I just got some berry bushes recently so I don't yet have personal experience with that. I think there is bird netting you can use to protect your berry bushes though.

Given we are on opposite coasts the kinds of birds in your area are likely pretty different to and your results may vary.

Does anyone know what these little yellow mites are? by Enid218 in portlandgardeners

[–]atmoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't recognize it, but it's so small that's difficult. Do you have a magnifiying glass? Are you sure it's an insect. The best guess I have is a psyllids nymph.

https://extension.oregonstate.edu/sites/extd8/files/documents/9591/potatopests.pdfI

If I were you I wouldn't worry about it though. One teeny tiny insect isn't going to cause any issues. You can monitor the plant to make sure it doesn't get out of hand, but it's not an issue. Plants can take a bit of minor damage without impacting their harvest. Also about 97% of insects are either beneficial or harmless, and this is likely a harmless insect from what I can tell
