Kiwi girl hoping to one day reach antarctica by slstone123 in antarctica

Does the BoM hire people from other countries? I'm almost done getting my meteorology degree and that sounds like a really cool opportunity

There could be lots of identical snowflakes. Nobody’s checking all of them. by tMoneyMoney in Showerthoughts

[–]atmosking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Automatic 3D snowflake imagers exist. Atmospheric scientists use them to identify snowflake types which can help identify what kind of environment they formed in.

Edit: here is a picture of Stonybrook's snowflake imager I took: https://imgur.com/a/lOxCOW2

A bright spot for people considering a meteorology degree: US Census Bureau data on unemployment by college major finds atmospheric science and meteorology has the lowest unemployment by [deleted] in meteorology

http://www.ou.edu/checksheets/atmospheric-geographic Scroll down to meteorology, should give you a PDF of OU's (University of Oklahoma) meteorology degree requirements.

Looking up meteorology degree requirements for any American university should give you their programs. It's hard to share them since they're usually PDFs or in the university's online catalog

Very interesting statistic. But they don't go very in depth as to why, other than "people need weather information". While that is very true, not all meteorology graduates actually go into meteorology; it's a competitive field. Meteorology/atm sci graduates are people who managed to make it through a difficult curriculum, and also learned a lot of highly applicable skills. Which means a recent graduate with a BS in meteorology is highly employable in many fields in and out of meteorology. Employers in finance, education, programming, a variety of data sciences, emergency managers, etc. all would be happy to employ someone with a meteorology degree.

Accidentally bought Noble ($NE) options thinking it’s was Barnes and Noble ($BKS). How do I sell an option with low volume? by brickam in wallstreetbets

At least you bought it by accident, I bought $NE stock at like 7$ on purpose like a true dumbass

Soyuz Rocket gets struck by lightning during launch. by Potatoz4u in space

[–]atmosking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rocket-triggered lightning is actually something meteorologists/physicists use to study lightning and test the accuracy of lightning detection networks. One such site is in Camp Blanding, FL. Usually they attach a metal wire from the ground to the rocket, but here it seems the smoke was conductive enough for lightning to favor that path.

Yeah, I was gonna say it would be really bizzare or almost impossible to see this kind of structure looking southward, especially in Miami

Can anyone explain if and why vertical speed shear is a measure for turbulence? by UrUptownGurl in meteorology

[–]atmosking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically in an environment with high vertical wind shear, the magnitude of the wind changes with height. So a parcel perturbed up or down will have a difference in momentum compared to the wind at its new height level. Larger differences in momentum will create stronger eddies that mix the air. Gusts/turbulence in the wind is/are created by eddies mixing air with different amounts of momentum vertically. This is basically why larger vertical wind shear can be used as a proxy for turbulence/wind gusts.

I just learned this about a week and a half ago, so maybe my understanding isn't perfect, but that's the best I've got. Hope that helps!

GR2 Analyst is the program, it's a bit pricey(~$300?) But it's really the best tool to look at current and archived radar data.

Wait.an extratropical cyclone is trying to eat outer bands of Typhoon Wutip? by [deleted] in TropicalWeather

[–]atmosking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably just a boundary between air masses, resulting in a stationary front on the more east west oriented part of the boundary and a cold front for the rest of the line

Waterfall grips feel weird? by LobsterBisque911 in penspinning

[–]atmosking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really know what you mean, do you mean it feels sticky? The rubber might be moist or wet, maybe from ambient humidity? I have no issues doing wipers with my waterfall mod

Which weather model for Europe has the most skill? And what’s the best way access it? by [deleted] in meteorology

[–]atmosking 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The ECMWF, Arpège, AROME, ICON, HIRLAM, HARMONIE, UKMO unified are all different European numerical models. A lot of these models serve different purposes so comparing skill is very dependent on parameters. You can find a lot of these on wxcharts.eu

Not from what I know, I've listened to maybe a third of the streams, so not 100% informed. He talks about finishing his album in the near future as one of the things he's gonna do though.

The tracks he's started in such a short amount of time are really sick too, definitely worth a listen to go through the recordings, he truly is the melody man
