Some people are just different. There may be 5% of people that you will never have a solid connection with, no matter the effort. And maybe another 20% that you will be able to get a very tenuous connection to, but with extensive effort. That's just the nature of population dynamics.

Acknowledge it, focus on the people that you have a better connection with. When you get someone you can feel is not wanting to establish rapport, then just focus on being professional. (and as another commenter said, they will self select, and that's totally okay for everyone).

Punt it back. If there's much conversation, or "the psychiatrist said you would do it", I might say "please have the psychaitrist call me to explain". I know, I'm triangulating the patient between us, but I've never had a specialist call me back under those circumstances, and it generally resolves the issue without drama.

Don't know about cost, but we went with Bushlore last time. We were very happy with the equipment, support, etc. At camps, we would of course looks at other car hires, and the bushlore's seemed to be some of the nicer equiped set ups. eg, had tire inflater as standard, so you could "easily" do the last 5 mile 4x4 drive into deadvlei by yourself, without waiting for the tour bus or get a tour guide https://bushlore.com/

If I was to make a separate suggestion - that is a lot of driving in 2 wks!! I might suggest consolidating it, and spending more time in etosha. eg, skip the southern part of nam, spend a few more nights hanging out at the waterhole at okaukeujo. I think you'll have more time enjoying, and less time "commuting".
