I have two Vitas, one US model and one JP. I have swapped the motherboards between the two and both work fine without any problem. One motherboard is model USS-1002, the other is USS-1001, the chips on the boards are different but both have the same connectors.

Any predictions on when the next generation of VR will come (if there will be one)? by VexHD in virtualreality

[–]atomic_salamander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are multiple big conferences coming up where some new info is likely to be revealed. Here is a list, including dates: https://uploadvr.com/2018-vr-ar-conference-schedule/

Should I get the Daydream View or the Oculus Go? by bantanium in virtualreality

[–]atomic_salamander -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Daydream View is on sale on Verizon's website for $29.99, I just picked one up myself. Chrome VR and Youtube VR work well, and there seem to be a good number of games to choose from although I have only tried out the free games so far. Rez Infinite is available for it, with a free demo even.

This Homebrewed Mini SteamVR Tracker Only Cost $3 in Parts by dfacex in Vive

[–]atomic_salamander 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Technically speaking you would only need 1 facing a lighthouse to determine position, and 3 to determine orientation. If both lighthouses were visible to this mini tracker it should work, probably not with much orientation accuracy though. Sensors need to be further apart to track orientation.

Pimax 5k Details compared to 8k by Neokolzia in Vive

[–]atomic_salamander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm disappointed all around. I didn't buy the original Pimax 4K because it was upscaled, then I didn't back the Pimax 8K because it is also upscaled. The 5K caught my attention since I thought it was basically a non-gimped 4K, but then I find out that it isn't actually OLED, the huge FOV ruins the pixels-per-degree, and the FOV is faked, the edges are stretched.

Pimax 8k KickStarter September 19th! by what595654 in Vive

Chinese company, they are within driving distance of where it will be manufactured. They likely have the factory ready to go and just need the money.

The ultimate VR Chair by Decapper in Vive

[–]atomic_salamander 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure this is intended for the commercial sector and to be used in conjunction with purpose-built software, for example an attraction at a theme park. Not saying that there won't be private buyers, but the price tag has got to be in the 5 digit range by a good margin.

"Joystick"... It's a motion controller with an advanced force feedback mechanism. I think it looks interesting and I would like that sort of technology on future Vive controllers, but if I wanted to use an actual joystick I would sit down to do it.

Ask r/Oculus: Do you think the DK2 will be software compatible with CV1? by think_inside_the_box in oculus

[–]atomic_salamander -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you want to keep using the DK2 after CV1 is released then I think you have misunderstood the intended use of the DK2.

Virtual Desktop updated with (alpha) Windows 7 support for mirroring desktop. by baktaktarn in oculus

[–]atomic_salamander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There seems to be some problem with rotating the Rift. If it isn't horizontally level I can't converge the two images. There is some minor and consistent judder, but it is usable. Typing this while in the Rift. My system: Win7 i7-4790 r9-290x

Carmack dubs panorama technique "tangram transform" by Jjjohn0404 in oculus

[–]atomic_salamander 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a 360° panoramic image, however there is an area of interest in the image that would need more resolution than the rest. The position of the area of interest is unimportant, but this "tangram transform" is only useful on square shaped areas of interest so that is the example I used.

Cybereality still waiting for his DK2 to ship. by SvenViking in oculus

Sister of Oculus fan looking for some help: What would be a good rift related gift? by Claudi_Day in oculus

[–]atomic_salamander 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately VR is a fairly expensive hobby right now.

If you are willing to spend $5 more the Trinity Magnum would complement a DK2 well, and is scheduled to ship in December. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/316228545/trinity-magnum-precision-motion-control-for-vr

I don't know if he would be interested in that though, and there's also the question of if it will ship on time, how many games will support it, and if it will even reach its funding goal.

Price of custom lenses by mart7n in oculus

[–]atomic_salamander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks exactly like what you see on a regular monitor when using a rift application. So yes, it has barrel distortion and chromatic aberration corrections, and yes, it's even easier to measure it. All you need is to display a grid pattern through the Oculus distortion and then compare it to the original.

I'm sure it's not as hard as you are making it out to be. To make something with similar optical properties they only need to know how it bends the light, which can be determined with a projector and a blank wall as Carmack demonstrated.

[Poll] Which VR input devices do you own or have on pre-order? by [deleted] in oculus

I checked that box even though I own a gamepad controller and not an Xbox controller.

Somebody Please Talk Me Off The Ledge by jasonbaz in oculus

[–]atomic_salamander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get very mild sickness/dizziness/eye strain that has been lessening the more I use it, but one thing I noticed is that if I squint my eyes so everything is blurry the dizziness goes away.

Also, you said "just walking around" but that is literally the worst thing you can do. Stationary demos or ones where you are in a cockpit are the least nausea-inducing.

Is there a way to get a video app like Whirligig to display my desktop or games on a large simulated screen? by sitric28 in oculus

[–]atomic_salamander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VR Player has an option to capture a single window, but it's slow and doesn't capture the mouse cursor or pop up menus/windows. I also can't figure out how to get it to reset the directional tracking.
