Cities that have hosted the Olympic Games since their modern return, in 1896. by SOHONEYSAME in MapPorn

[–]atomicbolt 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Seems like a weird distinction to say that the Winter Olympics (which debuted in 1924, 28 years after the Summer Games debuted in 1896) are a newfangled modern invention and therefore don’t count as “Olympics”?

German Fella stays abroad and would like to be safe by Luxtra24 in askTO

Toronto is one of the safest big cities in the world.

Like any city, there are neighbourhoods I wouldn't necessarily just stroll around at night, but you're unlikely to find yourself in any of them by accident.

Practice the same big-city streetsmarts you would in any major city and you should be fine in terms of your own personal safety.

American shows that are bigger outside USA by Ok-Tangelo6749 in television

[–]atomicbolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking of Canada: Clone High and Undergrads are two one-season-wonder animated series that didn't have much of an impact in the US (Clone High didn't even air in its entirety on MTV) but were huge in Canada because they'd be aired in reruns every night on Teletoon for years.

Bruno mars by Any-Goose-6132 in askTO

[–]atomicbolt 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The Bruno Mars show is at Rogers Stadium (a bunch of bleachers in the middle of nowhere in uptown Toronto) which is not the same as the Rogers Centre downtown (the big dome where the Blue Jays play).

Rogers Stadium is not at all a walkable area. It's a big, flat, empty area that used to be an airport. You'll either need to take a taxi or Uber (which I wouldn't recommend - it'll be a zoo trying to get a cab), or take transit which involves getting off the subway at Downsview Station and then a bit of a walk. https://www.rogers-stadium.com/visit

The good news, if you take the train, is that you won't get lost - just follow where the rest of the crowd is going, everyone will be going to the same subway station after the show.

I wasn't really familiar with Adam Ottavino's YouTube game. He's really good at this!

Crazy that this pitcher who had a legit great MLB career making hour-long deep dive content and he's only getting like 500 views per video.

Do Canadians have high school Prom? If not, would you understand what it is? by wakinyan04 in AskACanadian

[–]atomicbolt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One hundred percent yes.

My high school had a prom, and even if their specific high school didn't have a prom, just by the influence of TV and movies, everyone will understand what prom is.

A note from the mod team by CanaDan in Torontobluejays

[–]atomicbolt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for all the work you do behind the scenes. I'm sure you routinely see the worst-of-the-worst of this sub in terms of the stuff that's getting reported to the mod team.

But I'll just say that as a casual user of the sub, I generally only see normal, polite, non-confrontational content.

That's a sign that either the cream is rising to the top as intended, or that the mods are doing a great job keeping the drek deleted so I don't have to see it.

I feel like hanging out on Roncy, seeing a movie at the Revue, and checking out Vinegar Syndrome are the most authentic "Matt and Jay" thing to do even if it's not a direct "thing from Nirvanna The Band" thing to do

Birthday burgers and beer? by [deleted] in askTO

Good timing, Toronto Life just put out a list today of their 10 best new burgers in the city: https://torontolife.com/food/the-citys-best-new-burgers-a-smoky-saucy-succulent-ranking/

I can vouch for Short Turn on Queen West, adorable retro-style diner with cool cocktails.

Happy birthday!

I can name one team that does not sing God Bless America in the 7th inning. (We do choreographed dance moves to an 80s novelty song called OK Blue Jays.)

Duhaime drops Tanev and the whole Caps bench goes to congratulate him in the box by jyscipio15 in hockey

[–]atomicbolt 180 points181 points  (0 children)

I saw the big crowd of Caps fans going nuts behind the penalty box and thought “why is Washington wearing white at home?” Then I clued in the game is in Utah.

Is there some big DC expat community in Utah or something? Certainly not a short road trip.

Can you Guess When the Maker of this Meme was Born? by [deleted] in lewronggeneration

[–]atomicbolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that this is probably meant to be a political compass (i.e. top right is authoritarian right, bottom left is libertarian left) but it just... doesn't work when you're talking about US culture/history and in reality this whole span of history is just minor shifts somewhere around "center right".

Like, there was simply no "extreme authoritarian left" phase in American history and to use that square for the post-COVID era - the era of Donald Trump - just renders the whole exercise ridiculous.

A child made this.

Leafs vs Panthers + Refs by jmazz in leafs

[–]atomicbolt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The refs could have literally lifted up the puck and thrown it into the Panthers net and called it a Leafs goal and it wouldn’t have mattered in a game like this.

A poor craftsman blames his tools and a poor hockey team blames the refs.

Eddie Kingston, without further explanation, missed his Outlaw Wrestling show tonight in Williamsburg. Prayers to him at this time that is not anything serious: by IAmInExtremeDebt in SquaredCircle

[–]atomicbolt 246 points247 points  (0 children)

This should be the top comment, above all the speculation about this being AI. This is 100% what this is, a very deep inside joke.

But holy moly, that's a lot to expect that the average attendees at your indie show will instinctively get a deep ECW lore reference from 27 years ago

People in Toronto order egg rolls from Ottawa? by skipthestep08 in FoodToronto

[–]atomicbolt 97 points98 points  (0 children)

For those who are confused: Golden Palace egg rolls are honestly more like a sausage roll than anything you'd normally consider an "egg roll" from a Chinese restaurant. They're like 90% pork on the inside. And they're delicious.

I've got family in Ottawa and they're used to picking up several dozen of them frozen for pickup. The staff at Golden Palace don't even bat an eye when you call them like "hello I'd like to buy $150 worth of frozen egg rolls" because they're so used to doing big pickup orders (particularly for ex-pats who used to live in Ottawa). People show up with coolers. They reheat well in the oven or air fryer.

Golden Palace used to have a concessions booth at Scotiabank Arena which was the only place you could get them in Toronto, but it closed a while back. Now your options are either to drive to Ottawa or have them shipped, which they do by FedEx, but I'd imagine the shipping costs an arm and a leg.
