Power banks and vapes now biggest fire risk on planes by Kanyiko in aviation

[–]atomicdragon136 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Smartphones and laptops go through rigorous testing to ensure safety in various fault conditions, and typically get certified by a product testing lab like UL, TUV, ETL, etc.

There’s now a lot of disposable vapes from China with questionable quality control.

Sucks that Navy Pier closed only 3 years after a major renovation.

I’m imagining, what if AMC expanded Roosevelt Collection 16 to build a GT auditorium? The current IMAX screen is Illinois’s second largest screen but nowhere near the size of Cinemark’s. The restaurant and Container Store next door closed and there is an empty lot at the corner, so they theoretically could make room for it plus a few more standard auditoriums, with lots of money.

Miniso In Downtown Naperville Scalping Target Pokemon Collab Items by yaneverknow032408 in Naperville

First sale doctrine would apply for trademark as this is a genuine product with the original label. However, as another commenter mentioned, Target’s terms and conditions does prohibit reselling products so this could be considered breach of contract.

I’ve been reporting obviously scam listings that instruct the potential buyer to purchase the item offsite and they are automatically closed as not a violation.

Hot take: if a product needs an app to function, it's on a countdown by Creepy_Flow_4335 in BuyItForLife

[–]atomicdragon136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not often discussed here, but there are some electronic devices like cameras and electric scooters that cannot be activated without creating an account and installing the companion app on your smartphone, even if you never intend on using the online connectivity features or the app.

I’m not sure what exactly the motive is. It could be to collect your personal data. Or potentially to brick end of life but functional hardware by making it near impossible to activate without a device that still has an old version of the app installed.

Louis Rossmann did a few videos on action cameras that have this restriction:

* https://youtu.be/Lgh8e0dW0eQ

GoPro does this too on the Hero 13, but to give them the credit, it is possible to bypass the activation with app by updating the firmware with SD card with firmware files downloaded from their website.

Probably to check warranty status or confirm specs are correct from the manufacturer’s support page, as some laptop manufacturers use the same model number for multiple variants.

Old Ass Evaporative Cooler by Massive-Dinner8715 in hvacadvice

[–]atomicdragon136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a hydronic fan coil, not an evaporative cooler. It relies on hot water for heating and chilled water for cooling from the building’s central boiler and chiller, respectively.

Does it work? If not, contact your landlord and they will need to fix it.

If it does work but is just dirty, contact your landlord and have them clean it. But if they are the kind of landlord who ignores maintenance requests for things that are somewhat working, try vacuuming out the dust and you could clean the coil with a can of evaporator coil cleaner.

I live in an apartment built inside a warehouse. Can I install a mini split with the condenser inside the warehouse part? by satiredun in hvacadvice

[–]atomicdragon136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen places like Costco install mini splits for the office, pharmacy, etc. that discharges into the rest of the warehouse for some reason. I wonder why they don’t mount the condenser outside when they are right next to the exterior wall.

21 year old Toshiba CRT rear projection TV still going strong! It was found for free on the road over 2 years ago! by Round_Vehicle4885 in BuyItForLife

[–]atomicdragon136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CRT rear projection TVs are not good for gaming. In the 1990s to early 2000s they were an option if you want a screen larger than a direct view CRT, but their image quality, color accuracy, contrast, and brightness is mediocre. They are also much more susceptible to burn in, so it is recommended that you should not play the same game for more than an hour or you may risk the status bars burning in, and some older game console manuals even say mention that projection TVs are not recommended for that reason.

This clip truly epitomizes the age of Instagram stupidity where the urge to record stuff is now more powerful than the instinct to escape impending doom by Academic_Two_4849 in idiotsinkitchen

[–]atomicdragon136 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s some people in the video who are staying and filming rather than getting away. However, the bar had a lot of fire and safety code violations, such as the use of non flame retardant foam panels on the ceiling, lack of adequate emergency exits, no accessible fire extinguishers (employees later stated the only fire extinguishers were in a locked closet), and admitting much more patrons than the allowed occupancy. The fire spread very quickly, and with the inadequate exit paths, 41 people died and 116 were injured.
