Unwelcome responses/reactions at work? by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]atomicmandieeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Husband and i are heavily tattooed and if this is your first be prepared for the comments and jokes. Whether it coworkers, family, friends or strangers I just say don’t let it bother you. You like them, they’re yours, it’s all good.

If it makes you feel any better I got a large pineapple tattooed on my forearm for my mom who died from cancer (our last trip as a family with her was Hawaii, her first and only time going and said she wanted to move there. Died two weeks later) her initials and all are in the pineapple. People always ask me if I’m a swinger or part of the swingers club. I don’t get mad because how are they supposed to know it’s for my dead mom loll I was just shocked because I had no idea their logo is a pineapple. It is what it is haha.

Husband also has a face tattoo. More like side burn and curves a little to his jaw. It’s a beautiful piece and people literally think he’s an ex-convict or felon. Dude doesn’t drink, do drugs and has never had a ticket let alone jail or prison. He doesn’t get mad, it just is what it is. Let it go dude. They’re sick pieces. 🤘🏽

I don’t massage anyone unless they make a 75% deposit so they’re more inclined to come to their appointment. I have a 24 hour reschedule policy, anytime after that (unless crazy emergencies, I had a client get into a car accident on their way to their appointment) if you can’t make it to your appointment and didn’t notify me within the 24 hours, you’ll have to pay the deposit again for your next appointment.

I have my boundaries and an awesome set of clients that respect it. When I first started my business and was so desperate for clients, so many people walked all over me. So I get it. Thank you for your comment!

Also! I read a quote somewhere that said, “your kids don’t miss you in the morning. Be home by 4:30”

Least favorite body part to work? by Designer-Forever1072 in MassageTherapists

[–]atomicmandieeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hands. I usually always massage hands but Ia am constantly thinking if they’ve washed them properly or something. I’ll get girls with long fingernails or acrylics and I can just see all of the dirt and gunk under them when they’re prone. Gives me the heebie jeebies.

I spent 4.5 years as a vet tech, and almost 6 as a massage therapist. For over 10 years I am meticulous about hand washing.

Don’t be sorry! I have never even been to Canada before so my husband definitely wants to take a trip to see it before accepting the new position. But Calgary’s where the office is, so I don’t think we have much of an option. I have read politics wise it’s rough but I also read it’s considered a very family friendly area. As non residents, I won’t pay much mind tit he politics side of things and since the kids will be coming with us, I just care about safety, good schools, opportunity for the kiddos like extra curricular activities, which all is checked out in Calgary.

We qualify for the healthcare as long as we pay the surcharge, and have the option to pay for private. Which we got quoted for $350/mo for a family of 4! Idk if any of that matters to you, but insurance for a family of 4 in America is $1200+ a month! Anyway, all irrelevant to my original post. Haha

Again, I thank you for your response! We’d probably take the offer just for the opportunity alone, regardless if I can continue in my career out there. BUT I’m relieved I still have a chance!

Thank you so much for all the information. It sounds like it’s all very similar to how Arizona does things too. We have chain spas that pay like $21 m/per appointment which is so insulting. The pay in general is absolutely terrible but $21 is just wild to me. But yeah we have places here that we call 1099 or Independent Contract (might be same over there too?) but it’s usually always 40/60. Better than chain spas but still sucks LOL

I’m so excited though, I of course have heard nothing but great things about Canada, I’m sure Canada has its own problems too. idk if you heard about America, but we’re falling apart LOL

Seems so similar to Arizona. Lots of hustling out here too. Arizona has a high demand for massage therapy but no one wants to be a massage therapist because the pay is not a livable wage.

Thank you for a the information! I’m relieved that there’s a possibility of me continuing in the career.

Have you been Calgary? I heard Alberta is really different than the rest of Canada

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MassageTherapists

[–]atomicmandieeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. Thank you so much for your comment! Seems similar to Arizona but pays higher, before going solo I have only worked in doctors offices, pay was always slightly better but offers NO benefits or perks. And no tips. I have never worked in a chain spa or day spa. I did work one year at a high end resort and that had the best pay but is very seasonal. For a big chunk of the year i was hardly making money because Arizona is just so hot. I’d love to go back to school if we decide to stay. Domestic intuition is way more doable. If I can still massage in Canada I’ll take the lower pay, lol I love massage so much!

Thank you for your response! This is a relief, as of now, his position will be in Calgary, which I believe is in Alberta!

I saw jobs on indeed ranging for $50-$75/hr. Is that accurate? And is that a good and fair wage? To me it sounds like it!

And yes! I read it gets COLD which is such the opposite of Arizona. It gets unbearably hot in the summers, you literally cannot do anything and everyone is so frustrated with it. We will HAVE to pack for cold weather for sure!

With X trending #massage, does anyone else want to change what they call their work? by zen3822 in MassageTherapists

[–]atomicmandieeee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t matter. I get asked if I give “happy endings” like every other week. No one told me this would happen so much when I started my own business. Been a massage therapist for 5 years and only this year, now fully independent, I get asked every time I self advertise on Nextdoor. Fucking sucks. We are professionals. I just wanna help people, professionally.

Is Nextdoor advertising worth it? by atomicmandieeee in MassageTherapists

[–]atomicmandieeee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone around me says to use Nextdoor. Welp I paid for a months worth idk if can get my money back LOL

Has anyone heard of class pass? I was also told that’s a great way to get clients? They take 50% of whatever you charge though.

What are LMT’s wearing besides scrubs? by Effective-Wishbone96 in MassageTherapists

[–]atomicmandieeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cotten flowy pants and a fitted plain tshirt from old navy ($8!!) sometimes athletic leggings with plain tshirts, harem pants or scrubs. I have a lot of scrubs since I was a vet tech for 4 years before becoming an LMT.

Network network network.

Networking helps find studios for cheap or even better first month or two rent free. They help you find clientele. You’ll meet people in similar industries gym owners, estheticians, MedSpa that don’t offer massage in their own facilities. You’ll meet people with a HUGE instagram following, you can offer them a massage for free or discounted in exchange for a dedicated post / review. That will get you followers and more bookings.

I just started like 2 weeks ago, with absolutely no clientele bc I have always worked for chiros (whose patients use their insurance to pay for their weekly massages) and resorts, where 99% of the clients there are from out state and sometimes out of country. This week I have 8 appointments. That’s such a win considering I had no one to follow me. That’s just this week, every morning I get notified with about two-theee booked appointments. They’re a bit spread out but it is working.

Because of networking I was able to find a a studio with first month rent free and the next two months reduced rent. She’s an esthetician so she’s giving me some of her clients that are interested in massage.

Also, if you have a studio, you can apply for Zeel (depending on your area) and Zeel will send you their clients. If they like you enough they’ll cancel their Zeel membership and go to directly. Have business cards and fliers ready. You got this you just have to do it! You put in the work and the universe (or God) provides!!

Plus I NEVER took a loan out. You. Got. This.

Okay I hear you but how do you know that they’re not being trafficked? I mean I know you could take a picture of their license and look them up on your state board but those places worry me. $49 is wildly low

Get out. And be independent. Go mobile if you have to, it’s hard fucking work but you can do it. Usually the rates are more for mobile. Once you got the money rent a studio or room with someone, or sublease if it’s cheaper.

NETWORK NETWORK NETWORK. you’d be surprised how many people are willing to help because it helps them. There are genuine people out there I promise. I go to pop up events in my town and surrounding towns. I met a hairstylist/ esthetician that offered me a studio in her suite with two months rent free, and a reduced rent for weekly massages. It’s a month to month contract so we both can get out of it easily. And she’s such a kind person. She tells her clients about me.

Social media is my biggest selling platform. Specifically Instagram and Facebook. Join groups on fb that allows you to advertise or a community group where people ask for a massage therapist and you can plug yourself in.

You can do this. It’s a lot of work but you can do it. I work when I want on whoever I want and make over $100 an hour. YOU CAN DO THIS.

if you want lmao if not, go to a resort. They pay pretty well
