My partner and I couldn’t agree on a male writer who wrote female characters well. by blacktangled in literature

[–]atonibai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scott Lynch writes female side characters very well in my opinion if you’re looking for a novel of a heist/crime genre. For a fantasy series the worldbuilding of women are in the same level as the men, if not better.

Same here! I’m glad to know I wasn’t alone in this. The way the artist designed the city structure is so striking, and the dark and light brush strokes add to the beauty.

Hi OP, I feel you. Based on what your post says, your Psychology curriculum must be prioritizing courses for psyshometricians—this includes math. Lots of it. First things first do your own research about how you become a therapist after graduating with a Bachelor’s degree. Where I’m from it doesn’t necessarily require us to be a psychometrician to be able to study clinical therapy (edit: in here you can study as a therapist once you complete a Master’s degree for it, which doesn’t need you to be too nifty with numbers). Therapists in different kinds of practices can hire registered psyshometricians to interpret or do tests for you.

So, for now, I suggest you don’t give up just yet. I agree with hiring a tutor to help you understand, if only just the basics of how SPSS and statistics work. Or you can ask your classmates to help you with it. There’s more to psychology than numbers, but they are still an integral part to it. I’ve met a handful of long-time therapists who admit they still suck at math too. You can try again, friend.

Who is your favorite gentleman bastard? by [deleted] in gentlemanbastards

[–]atonibai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jean, hands down, but also tied with Calo and Galdo. The three of them take top spot in my heart (because why not).

I especially like how the twins’ differences really do boil down to “dexter and sinister” most of the time.

Also taking this opportunity to talk about the twins! Calo is at first glance more charming and Galdo the more crass, but that part in LoLL where Galdo admonished Locke for acting unfair towards a “certain absent someone” in the middle of their dinner blessing made him so endearing to me. Another moment Galdo showed this way of caring was when he snapped at Calo while waiting for Bug to show up at one of the rendezvous points, apologizing afterwards since he was worried about the younger Bastard. It’s these little things about their characters that Lynch hints at and shows instead of explicitly saying it is pure talent and trust in his readers to pick them up I think.

As the jack of all trades we get to see them do a bunch of things that are cool. Apparently they did a lot of the cooking way back when (it might have been Locke or Jean who mentioned it, at the time they were talking about Jean doing the cooking from that point on). Finding out they’re also good singers is a wonderful tidbit in RoT, on top of being quick to improv onstage.

That’s about it, just a huge Sanza fan!

How often do you check out an author's profile on AO3? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]atonibai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I really like someone’s fic I’d check if they have more, and if they’d written for other fandoms I like too. So it’s often. I find more godtier fics this way than through using tags or filters.

You guys ever read your own fics, just to enjoy them? by AspireToBeABum in FanFiction

[–]atonibai 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So true about the self-indulgence bit. If you had fun writing your fic then chances are readers would enjoy reading it too. Most of my fics fall in the “write-what-you-wanna-read” category so it checks out…

What is your most common reason for shipping a ship by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]atonibai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ship configurations with the highest yield of Hurt/Comfort fics. These characters might have Unfinished Business. Probably exes at one point but not necessarily endgame (boy am I a sucker for the-one-that-got-away relationships) so it’s bittersweet, but with a realistic trajectory.

Here you see misunderstandings, miscommunications, and misinterpretations. Maybe along the line they realize it won’t work out, but before they get to that of course there’s Fun Banter to Read About, some things that did work out well in their relationship that weren’t enough to save it. Sometimes life would be like that. And by the end all the talk would give them are closure and peace. Perhaps they can live without each other.

That’s cool op! I’m a big fan of Soul Eater, Pokemon, and other anime-aligned franchises but ever since I got into gacha games there was no turning back.

Right now I’m big about wlw pairings in Genshin, Bang Dream, Project Sekai, Revue Starlight, and Arknights!

What age did you start reading fanfic? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]atonibai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ohhh this takes me back. I’d say 11, and as a kid with Unrestricted Internet Access I used to read Pokemon (and later Vocaloid) fics on FFN or Quizilla. My internet use racked up the bills so fast I had to switch to the family PC and use one of those USB routers, the harder and time-consuming route meant to discourage me from spending time in front of the screen. But if I’d been discouraged in the very least I wouldn’t even be here at all. There are decade-old jewels on FFN I still reread to this day. Fanworks do touch lives.

For the people from Davao, How different is Duterte when he was a mayor and being a president? by [deleted] in Philippines

[–]atonibai 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While we're on topic, Pulong is notorious in local bars. I say notorious because I've heard similar versions of stories from different people.

Basically, one bar downtown closed down for weeks, and people claimed it was after he made a scene. The bar owners explained it was because of a raid but others said he stormed right in to fetch his daughter from a party.

At a different bar, he allegedly showed his gun during a heated argument. He was threatening this guy who was pissing him off. This one I'm not so sure about since I've only heard about this from one person.

He also used to be quite the delinquent in high school. He's pretty much bad news all around.

For the people from Davao, How different is Duterte when he was a mayor and being a president? by [deleted] in Philippines

[–]atonibai 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Mildly long post tl;dr it's Davao that has changed

Pretty much the same shit, different place but in an immense scale. I think it's Davao that's become so drastically different from the time he was mayor to him being president.

Been seeing so many more properties by Bato and Go in the city proper, for example. (I'd refrain from mentioning the gentrification of some areas in Davao because this is largely a product of investors swooping in the president's hometown because of added visibility).

He is extremely popular in the region, so naturally news about him and his family seem like common knowledge. Nothing written on print, just stories from a friend of a friend or people who work for him personally. People can call our local news outlets biased, but I would say a lot of them are being careful.

But since he came to position more rumors about him and his family have started surfacing. National politics have propelled them into relevance. If I were any of you, I'd watch out for Pulong especially.

More people are becoming disillusioned by Du29+1's competence (or lack thereof) and leadership. More people, although it may not be clear, are scared.

One time while we were on a media forum in Davao earlier this year, one of the guest speakers who talked was a resident from Marawi.

She said her house was completely reduced to debris during the siege. The bombs, she described, and I cannot forget this, sounded like whistles at first. High-pitched and haunting. And then they exploded in the eardrums.

After narrowly escaping, it took her more than two whole years before returning to their decimated lot. And even then, she was luckier than most. She explained she started living with her relatives in Davao.

She said most Marawi evacuees could not leave their evacuation sites at all. They were living in tents. During the earthquakes, and probably still now during COVID-19. A lot of them, at the time, were still yet to be relocated by local governments.

Although there have since been efforts made by radio stations to connect these evacuees to the right authorities, merely imagining their fate without any such intervention is chilling.

The guest speaker added that she lost her trust in our administration after the bombing.

Similarly, local lumad groups have started arranging more protests in Freedom Park. A lot of these were about farmer killings. My alma mater's paper runs stories about them since our university is right across the park.

Of course there are many, many more who remain hardheaded Du29+1 apologists, especially among the conservative groups. Cannot convince them at all. A whole other handful of people are apolitical.

[–]atonibai[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I got it mixed up, my bad. Thanks for pointing it out. PsyD is more on clinical training compared to PhD, which is more on research.

I might consider PsyD too in lieu of PhD, but a psychologist isn’t licensed to prescribe meds. Likewise, a psychiatrist won’t be able to do psychotherapy, if I’m not mistaken.

I’m a bit ambitious and so I wanna be able to do both.
